Oh, Abelard....!!!

He stays out for days at a time. I haven't bothered posting about it since
the last time he vanished for almost 5 days but he's been doing the same
thing over and over. He'll stay gone for several days then show up for an
hour or so, then vanish for another 2-3 days, come home for an hour, go out
for 4 days, etc. etc.

Sometimes if it's a cool enough night to close the front door I will set the
locking cat flap for "In Only" in case he comes in during the night, then I
can at least see him in the morning. (Unlike Lily, Tommy and Billy, he
hasn't figured out how to open it from inside when it's locked this way.)
But I don't dare make him stay in very long after I get up, or else he will
do his business anywhere but the litter box, as if to say "Let me out, or
I'll stink up this whole house."

This is a cat who used to sleep next to me under the covers in my bed, no
matter what! The cat who followed me everywhere like a shadow. Now I almost
never see him anymore. I am sad and starting to worry! I haven't seen him
since last Thursday morning. I think this is a new record for missing time,
and I've been calling him all day to no avail.

I want Abelard to stay home, and behave himself. How can I solve this one?

Oh dear.  I wish I could offer advice but Persia never goes on the OUT
unless I pick her up and put her in her kitty-walk on the patio.  I know
there is a way to attach this sort of device to a cat door but given your
entry-way that wouldn't be practical, would it?  Purrs that Abelard comes
home and stays there!

I am so sorry, Pat.  Purring for him to get his butt home.

All that I can suggest is keeping him inside, and hiring a pet
behaviorist.  Maybe your vet can suggest some drug that will help but
this sounds like a behavior issue. Also didn't this just start when a
new kitten was brought home?  Good luck

I thought it might be connected with Beatrice's arrival, also, but the first
few weeks she was here, they slept together on a chair and played together
like best friends. He still plays with her when he is here.

I wonder what's out there that's so interesting?  Maybe he found some
new friends?  With Abelard, you never know what kind of crowd he might
have fallen in with.

I thought it might be the skunks again. Yesterday there was a family of them
frolicking around and under an old (non-operational) vehicle in the yard.
All the other cats were out there watching and sniffing noses with them, and
I figured Abelard must be close, but no...

Is he neutered?    He probably has adopted another home.  Does he appear
well fed?  MLB

He's neutered. There are no other houses around me except Gloria's, where
there are four large dogs and two cats, and she hasn't seen Abelard either.

Weight-wise, he's always been quite thin, but healthy-looking.

Don't know why he's wandering so, Pat, but I am sure it must be so
nervewracking.  Purrs from us to keep him safe, to bring him home and
support you.

That's really weird, since it's a new behavior. I wonder if the hunting
has been really good and that's what he's out doing. But for days? Be
nice if we could put a little kitty-cam around his neck.

Do your cats have food and water available outside?  Anymore I don't even
feel like I have cats.  Except for the hassle of getting them in at night.
Charlie keeps water and cat food in the garage for them so they really don't
need to come in.

It was nice tonight.  They have both been in for 24 hours and they had a
good time playing together.

There are ponds, and plenty of prey animals. But Abelard LOVES being around
me. At least he used to... Lately he won't even sit in my lap willingly when
he is home.

Abelard, go home to your Meowmie!

He didn't show up last night and still is MIA. I will have to spend some
time hunting for him today before it gets too hot.

You may have just found his reason.  You have said your place is very hot in
the summer.  He may have a hangout he prefers.  Shade, a pond, prey.  vs.
house is too hot.

I know part of our problem is our cats prefer the climate outside.  And
definitely prefer the entertainment.

I think Abelard is probably jealous of the others. Purrs that he comes
home soon.

A house is not a home, without a cat.

How old is Abelard?  Our Percy, aged 2, has been
doing the same thing for the last month few months.
I know where he hangs out -- there's a house on the
next block that is cat-friendly and has a couple of
intriguing bird feeders in the front garden. In
fact, I dropped off a bag of cat food there a couple
of weeks ago because I know the woman there is
feeding him.
I've gone over there twice and have caught him
and taken him home. I've also walked/driven around
there countless times, and haven't seen him.
I suspected that he was unhappy about one of
the other cats in the house; we foster for a cat
rescue group, and I know that he didn't like her.
However, he has been home since
she left, but has still gone on walkabout again.
Every time we get him home, we are determined
that he's going to stay in the house, but the little
scamp is very sneaky and fast. He knows that he
has to outwit us, and he does!
I think that, for some cats, the age of
2-ish is a time of adventure and daring. I've seen
it before, and have seen the older cats become
happy to stay in or around the back garden.
Still, it's worrying, and I do hope that
Abelard returns home soon. Percy carries a tag
with his name, address, and phone number on it,
and that gives me a little confidence that I'll
hear if anything happens. I put it on him because
he disappeared in February, when the temperature
was 'way below zero. I was frantic. I put up a sign
in a local pet store, and an hour later a woman
a few doors down called me to say that her mother
had let him in and he'd been living in her basement
for 3 days!

I don't have any neighbors close enough for him to visit, except Gloria, and
he does not go there. I think he'd be happier at home if Eli was gone. Eli
does pick on him, but I think it's only because Tommy picks on Eli. Abelard
himself has never picked on anyone else.
W. Leong - 05 Jul 2005 17:09 GMT
Rusty is 11 and recently started to want to go out. I live in a highrise,
and
so out only means the hallway. When he sees me scooping his litter box,
he will sit by the door and wait to accompany me out the hallway to the
garbage chute.
Or I will come back and open the door and he will rush out into
the hallway. But he always run back to sit by the door waiting to get back
inside.
The only thing is I live by the stairway. If anyone open
the door to the stairway Rusty may decide to go up or down the stairs
and it will be hard to catch him. Or if he goes into the elevator when it
opens the door while he is in the hallway.

When I first adopted him as a 1 year old, Rusty will sit by the door and
cry to go outside. Then he got over it, but now started it up again for
whatever reason.

Does Abelard has an  ID tag or micropchip?

Was he your first cat and had you just to himself?  As a matter of interest,
if he was he might be upset about the others.
You know yourself that cats will leave home if they are not happy about
something.  Kitty FC did and came here.
There might be something that Abelard is not happy about and you must find
out what it is to get him back.
On the other hand, the weather might be so nice and the hunting so good that
he doesn't need you at the moment ;-)
My money is on that.

No, he came in as #4, a small frightened kitten. All the others were gentle
with him.

This is my guess then, not worth much.  It is warm outside.  He does not
need to be in to be warm.  There are things he can eat outside. At the
moment he doesn't need you.
Wait until the temperature falls.  Abelard will be back.
We sometimes don't remember that cats don't need us as much as we need them.
Plus they have no conscience.

I do wish he would come home for you as you miss him so.

I see the other six constantly. Baby Eyes almost never goes out, and when
she does it's for a few minutes only. Lily stays in almost as much as Baby
Eyes. Beatrice is inside a good deal of the time too. So it's not *that* hot
in here.

Billy, Tommy and Eli come in several times a day to eat, drink, and check up
on me. But lately I am lucky to see Abelard twice a week!!!

Purrs that Abelard will remember where "home" and love can be found, and
return to you soon, Pat. I hope he's okay.
