alphonze@mail.com - 04 Jul 2005 16:16 GMT 'Ello,
I am afeared that my brain may be packing it in. The last few months of chronic overwork may be taking its toll. (No... no sympathetic purrs please... it's my own company, so the ridiculous piles of work and insatiable requirement for staff is *great*!)
The problem? I haven't got a clue what today's Two Lumps cartoon is about. http://twolumps.keenspace.com, for those who haven't been there before.
Maybe it's an American cultural reference that I'm missing... but... what the heck is "Black Cats"? I know someone here can put me out of my misery!
Cheers, Al.

I'm from the U.S. and I have no idea. Sorry I can't be any help. Will you accept work purrs, instead? Annie
Don & Lisa - 04 Jul 2005 16:37 GMT There are fireworks called Black Cats, maybe that explains it. That would also explain why he wanted to be far from the litter box. Head butts to all, Lisa.

LOL They'd make the litterbox like a battlefield to cats in cartoon-land....

MaryL - 04 Jul 2005 17:07 GMT > 'Ello, > [quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > Cheers, > Al. There used to be a candy bar called Black Cats. It was fairly long and flat -- sort of like black (or dark-colored) taffy on a stick. I haven't seen it for many years, but this is another possibility for the cartoon.

MaryL - 04 Jul 2005 17:19 GMT >> 'Ello, >> [quoted text clipped - 19 lines] > > MaryL I just took another look at the cartoon. It does sound more like Black Cats fireworks. That would better explain the last panel, where the other cat wants a warning before the first one uses the litter box.

CatNipped - 04 Jul 2005 17:08 GMT > 'Ello, > [quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > Cheers, > Al. "Black Cats" is the name of a firecracker here in the US, and since it's the fourth of July, there are "Black Cats" everywhere you look (and even when you're not looking you can still hear them - sigh, no sleep last night or tonight, the neighbors spend *thousands* of dollars on fireworks).

Hopitus - 04 Jul 2005 17:31 GMT Fireworks *are* expensive! BTW some of the best I've ever had came from TX roadside stands, over the years. Using "punk" is ridiculed as "sissy" but that's what we do and have all our digits intact to this day......weenieHopitus

Here in Hong Kong fireworks are totally illegal, as they were used as weapons in riots back in the 60s. We have to make do with a few enormous government firework displays each year.
Thanks all! I knew I'd get my mystery solved here!
Al :)

If you drive 10 or 15 miles, you can reach areas where fireworks sales are legal. The law is only enforced if someone makes a complaint about noise, and the people setting off the fireworks refuse to stop. Also, if you accidentally set something on fire, you will probably be charged with "reckless endangerment" or the like, which carries a more severe penalty than just possession of fireworks.

We haven't had rain here in Houston in *months*. I have dry pine needles on the roof of my house because even the trees are dying in the midst of this drought. And the idiots next door at shooting off fireworks!!! I think I'll go stand outside with a hose all night! SHEESH!

I cut my grass today for the first time in 5 weeks, and it was only about 4 inches tall, except for a few ambitious weeds. A thunderstorm came through a few miles south of me, but my neighborhood didn't get any rain. Hopefully we will all be lucky, and not have any fires get started.
