What's the deal?  Why do cats always want in the closet?  It's not like
there is anything new in there.  Persia cried and cried until I let her in
the closet.  Okay.  She's in the closet.  I hear all this shuffling around
in there.  I look and see a pair of eyes peering at me from the 3rd shelf.
She's poking around like she's looking for something.  Do I have the dreaded
closet greeblings?

TuTu loves closets.  When in there she can rip my garment bags open and
crawl  inside.   Total garment bags torn apart because I was not vigilant:
six.  MLB

Dunno.  In Oscar's case, closets are one place she is most definitely
not allowed, so naturally she takes every opportunity to sneak in
while I'm putting away laundry or picking out my clothes.  I always
look for her before I close the door, but it's not unusual to hear a
mysterious meowing emanating from the closet a few hours after the
door's been shut.

*sigh*

I try to keep the cats out of the closet, too.  It's not the
mournful meowing later on, but the smell.....  The 'there's no
litter box in the closet' smell.

Oscar's pretty fastidious.  She's never eliminated in the closet.

Neither has Persia.  She just likes the dark hidey-spots :)

Weirdly, none of ours care about the closet.  Maybe because I'm too
lazy to close the door most of the time, so they're in there if they
feel like it.

I would presume it's the same appeal of small, dark places that makes
Tyche cram herself into suitcases and boxes.

Ours have a fascination with the /bathroom/.  If you're in there,
they'll cry to get in too.  Tyche will scream.  Smokey throws his
weight against the door, trying to pop the latch. He's done it a few
times--then he shoves the door open and wanders in.

Ha! A couple of mine have a closet-wish. They sneak in whenever they
get the chance. Sometimes they get shut up in there and have to yowl to
get out.
Yoda, that's a different story. I *know* when he asks to get in the
closet he feels bad. That's where he stayed when he was so sick. Any
time he's sick, that's where he wants to hide.

Mischief - 03 Jul 2005 06:02 GMT
When I first got Imp, he was my very first cat, so I didn't think about
the closet.  When I first brought him out of the carrier, he sat in my
lap for a while and then dashed under the bed.   I figured that he was
scared so I let him be.

In the middle of the night I heard something meow.  I jumped up and
turned on the light.  The noise had come from the closet, which is a
sliding wall closet and was open about a foot.  I opened it further and
suddenly Imp shot out.  Aw, poor guy!

Course then he started having accidents, but that was eventually fixed
when he figured out where the litterbox was.  But since I didn't want
to have any surprises in my closet, I've tried to keep it closed ever
since.

Mischief is VERY curious of it however when it is open.  There have
been times I've forgotten to close it and suddenly I'll hear a thump
from the closet.  I'll check the closet and Mischief will run out like
she wasn't there.  Hmph!

My crew is allowed to investigate my bedroom closet at will, as it has
sliding wooden doors, that are mostly open anyway.  That space is mostly
greebling free. =o) The tiny little coat closet in my living room which has
everything that won't fit in my bedroom closet crammed in it is a
Nina/Francesca magnet.  There must be a SERIOUS Greebling infestation in
there, because they're even willing to brave Big Suck (The vacuum cleaner)
to hunt them down. MOre than once, I've just barely caught Nina around the
middle as she was diving into the space between the wall and the ironing
board. =o)

Kitchen cabinets where I keep my mixing bowls and baking pans are another
huge cat draw. The Baking Greeblings are pretty well kept in line, though.

Mine are definitely interested in my closet - all the closets in the house.
Normally I keep them closed, and I do all I can to keep them out of the two
that aren't in my bedroom.  If one of the cats goes in my bedroom closet,
I'll leave it open a few inches so they can come out.  That is, if I notice.
Lindy has been shut in there more than once, and she doesn't meow to be let
out - at least not unless she's been in there for a very long time.

A few years ago, I went to visit my mother for a week.  My daughter and
son-in-law decided to surprise me by painting my bathroom while I was gone.
Thank goodness they did!  They came over about 30 hours after I left the
house.  My son-in-law went through my bedroom to use the bathroom off it,
and heard a meow.  He discovered Skeeter (RB) was shut in my closet!  She
had been in there for 30 hours, and hadn't done a thing!  She made a beeline
for the cat door.  When she came back in, naturally she was hungry.  I don't
know how she held it for that long.

Since then, I would leave the closet door open a few inches if I were going
on a trip.  Up until Nanki-Poo came into my life.  Lindy likes to get up on
the shelf, which usually means she knocks things down.  I can prevent that
by opening the side farthest from the dresser, since she would jump on the
dresser on her way to the shelf.  However, Nanki-Poo doesn't need the
dresser.  He can make it from the floor.  The morning I left for Australia,
I made sure neither of them was in the closet and left it shut.

The  cupboard under our sink must have a MAJOR infestation - Scouty
just won't leave it alone (even though she knows that it and the
kitchen are off-limits) I have to keep a wooden spoon threaded through
the cupboard doors, because otherwise she gets in there and plays with
the potatoes and onions! She also tries to go in there to hide if
someone comes to the house... the first time she wanted to I let her
because I figured she couldn't get hurt in there - WRONG! She was so
freaked out she wriggled into the dead space behind the cupboard and
couldn't get out until we moved the stove away from the wall!
Silly's fascinated with the bathroom cupboard, and climbs in almost
every time I open it up to get out the catfood... really they're
fascinated with ALL closets - lots of interesting smells in there I
guess.

Stinky just wants all the doors in the house to be open.  He wants to
be able to walk through every door at all times.  He doesn't care too
much about closets except for a little one that is full of boxes,
shopping bags and wrapping paper.  That is the coolest closet in the
world as far as he's concerned.

Mimi was a great girl for the closets.  I would wake up in the middle
of the night, hearing "rummage rummage rummage"

Aww, it was the same with Nikki. She adored closets. Miranda is starting
to show signs of being a closet cat too. She even got trapped once, but
luckily Frank pointed out that there was a cat in the closet, so she
wasn't there for long. And Frank is like Stinky in that he needs doors
to be open in general.

Well, not now, but if she DIDN'T go in and take care of them, you would.

Hehe.  Maybe you do.

I think it's just that cats hate closed doors of any kind.  We keep
the Kitty Rescue/Computer Room door closed off, and it drives them
bonky.  They always want in, even though there is nothing in here for
them (well, that's not true -- right  now we have our yearly supply of
catnip that my tax person brings me drying in a paper bag).

A very long time ago, I accidentally locked my poor Geesha in a closet
for several hours, having no idea she was in there until much later
when I heard her meowing.  I felt SO bad!  Ever since then, I'm very
careful about making sure there are no furries in closets when I close
the door!

Cats don't believe in doors. My closet doesn't have a door, so they
aren't interested. But the large coat closet in the living room has a
sliding door. I learned years ago to put a hook and eye latch on it so
the cats wouldn't open it. And I have to be vigilant and sneaky when I
want to get in there without a cat suddenly diving into the messy
stack of bags and boxes under the bags of clothes.

Vino loves closets.  He always wants in the one that's opened the
least often.  He burrows around and sometimes he stands up on his back
legs and scratches the back wall of the closet.  He can amuse himself
for a long time doing this.  In the end, he makes himself a nest
amongst the clothes and meatloafs while looking out smugly.
