OT - A Really Weird Thing Happened the Other Day

And I do mean Weird!

On Wednesday, I returned home from my Library run & volunteering at the
local Humane Association.  Parked the Jeep near the garage (we use the
garage more for storage, and it 's detached from the house, at the back of
the property, abut 30-40 yards from the back door), and entered the house
with my find(s).

One of my finds was an audio book on CD.  Popped it into one of the CD-Rom
on the 'puter, and started catching up on the NGs.

About an hour later, I head to the kitchen to refresh my ice-water.  On the
way I glance out back, and I stand there with my mouth hanging open,
staring.  I imagine I looked like one of those cartoon characters with it's
jaw on the floor, question marks and exclamation points surrounding my head.
My brain wasn't wanting to comprehend what my eyes were seeing:  My Jeep had
rolled from it's parking spot, through the back yard (going between and
missing both a mighty elm and a picnic table), not stopping until it hit
(and knocked over) the double shepherd's hook that our bird feeders are on.
It appears to be nicely parked in the back yard, nose in toward the back
porch ("da tiled room").  My Jeep has an auto tranny - since I'm a lefty and
suck at trying to shift gears - so I still don't know exactly what happened.

I get my keys, and go out back.  I stand there for a minute or two, looking
at the Jeep.  More question marks surround my head as I scratch it (I might
add that I'm almost giggling as I type this, seeing cartoon versions of
myself in my mind).  I get in the Jeep (I check, it seems to be in "Park"
just fine) & back it up, get out, get the shepherd's hook out of the ground
and move the (now grounded) bird feeders off to the side, get back into the
Jeep and drive it around the tree it originally missed, an park it back in
it's "normal" spot, parking brake firmly engaged (not something I normally
do, since it's an auto tranny & has a "Park" gear).

The ground is hard & dry (as well as the grass), so I can barely see the
path the Jeep must have taken.  If it hadn't been for those bird feeders, it
would have rolled into the back porch, and <insert deity of your religion
here> knows how much & what kind of damage would have occurred.  Now that I
think about it, since we want to replace the windows in "da tiled room",
maybe it would have been better had the Jeep did a bit of damage - but it
probably wouldn't have been enough $ to go over our deductible <sigh>.

And Mimi was screaming to be let back there again last night, but there was
a thunderstorm going on (finally, we get some much needed rain), and we
don't like them being back there with all that glass during a storm so we
kept them all in.  Now she's doing her impersonation of an overstuffed
furry-purry paperweight as I type this.  All her crying last night must have
tuckered her out ;)

Get Jeep on slight incline and see if it moves when you put it in "Park" and
don't brake in any form. Most American-made vehicles (my Ford Ranger
included) "Park" mechanism consists of a - extend your hand, make the
"V"sign w/first 2 fingers, then bend them like people do these days to mime
"quote" sign - plastic jiggy that looks like what your fingers do in above
description.
So important not to slam gear into and out of this gear as it's not really a
gear but a tiny, weak braking system!
Very dangerous if it gets damaged or breaks as strange happenings do go
on...just like you describe. Take to your garage for checkup, please.

Normally it doesn't, but in the 10 years we've had it (it's a 95 year model,
our first new-car purchase!), it does have this quirk where it can be in
"park" and yet won't start.  If you jiggle the gear selector, it 'clicks'
into the sensor (that if not incontact with, it won't start), and then it
starts.  I have the feeling that I didn't have it completely in park, even
though it looked & felt like it did.  Another quirk is that, when changing
from reverse to drive (or vice-versa), you don't have to step on the brake,
as you would with any normal vehicle.  I don't drive it that much, and it
being a 10-y-o Jeep, I doubt if I will take it to the garage to be checked,
but I will use parking brake from now on :D

My manual-transmission car doesn't require a brake between reverse and
first =P

Well, besides HUGELY enjoying your writing of this incident, I too looked
like a cartoon character reading it with my mouth hanging open. I'm so glad
it did NOT roll into your porch. I bet you had to prove to DH it happened!

Suggestion:  Be sure to check RECALLS.   You can do this on Google.

There have been 2 recalls for 1995 Jeep Wranglers:

1999: for catalytic converter failure/breakdown (this happened in another
weird situation: we started hearing a rattling noise coming from under the
Jeep, we took it in as it was under warranty, said it would be fixed, but
they had to order the part (wasn't in stock), and they would call us when
part was in.  When we got home, in our snail-mail box was the recall notice
from Chrysler.  The next day, I went to local FedEx facility to pick up a
package (I was at work when they attempted to deliver), and the guy that
brought the package out, when he heard the rattle, stated that I should take
it to the dealer & they'd fix it for free - there's been a recall.  I told
him I already knew that, and that the part was on order, it was getting
fixed as soon as it was delivered.  The day after that, the part came in &
took it to the dealership - who in turn took it up the street to a local
Meineke to do the work)

2002: for parking brake on manual tranny models only - so mine doesn't fit
in that category.  This is the only recall I could find on the www - the
converter recall isn't listed (dunno why).
