Hello All!

I haven't been around much posting--but have been reading--been busy with my
brood.

Spot had a dental and two teeth extracted a week ago.  I am giving him
antibiotic for 14 days.

He had excessive ginvivitus (sp) and they aren't sure why his mouth was in
such bad condition.  They gave him a couple of shots--one being antibiotic
and I forget what the other one was--but his gums aren't red at all.  The vet
said that it may come back.  The vet said that he doesn't have stomitus
(spelling).  The vet suggested that we have a 'Senior Wellness" blood panel.
It tests for many-many things and only costs $98.  With me recently adopting
Spot and him being at the shelter for over a year--this will give us a base-
line and the vet wanted to see if anything in the test indicates why such a
bad mouth vs. just attributing it to genetics.

Spot is a DSH tabby.  He is a big boy--quite long and tall--he weighs 12 lbs.

I recently switched the diet to EVO.  This particular vet is in the school
that canned cat food is not good for cats teeth and he says that with all the
vets that he has worked with--that giving 'fixed' male cats canned food for
uninary tract health is an old 'wives tale'--so I will not be incorporating
canned food into their diet.

Spot had one of his canines extracted--does this generally cause a problem
for them?  Spot is a strictly indoor cat.

Thanks,
Jen

The extractions won't cause any problems for him. Grant had his back teeth
all removed to stop gum trouble. Some cats, it is now thought, can be
allergic to their own plaque. It can also indicate a depressed immune
system. However, the extractions will only help overall health when they
need to come out.

Thank you.  The vet didn't feel that this was a condition/issue for Spot and
that is why we are going to do the "Senior Wellness" panel--even though Spot
is only five years old.

Thanks,
Jen
