After Vino ate his breakfast this morning, he went straight to his
litterbox as usual.  Sidebar:  Why do they do this?  I think it's so
funny, it's like food in, poop out.
Anyway, he was having a particularly energetic digging session, making
the whole covered litterbox rock from side to side.  I was standing in
the hall watching and chuckling to myself.  Suddenly he stopped but
didn't come out.  I figured he was doing more of his "business", so I
went into the living room and turned on the computer.
Suddenly, I heard this plaintive yowling.  OMG, my heart skipped a
beat.  Doesn't that mean they are blocked when they yowl in the
litterbox?  I ran over to the box to look for Vino.  But he wasn't in
there anymore.  He yowled again and it came from the kitchen.  I went
in there to see him on the counter looking out the window and yowling
at some birdies.  He saw me and took off zooming up and down the
stairs.
Bastard cat, he totally freaked me out!

DH is like that, but sometimes it depends on what he's eaten/eating.  Potato
Salad, for example, is best given to him while he's on the throne.

LOL!  I can just see it, eating potato salad on the toilet!  That
reminds me of this one poor kid in high school who got mercilessly
made fun of because he apparently used to eat tomatoes while on the
loo.  How anybody knew this info is beyond me.

Rusty didn't yowl when he was blocked, but he is a quiet cat.
He just kept going in and out of the litter box both times.
Now I started worrying whenever I see him going into the box
soon after his last use of the box. Don't know how many times
he got me worried.
I sometimes removed the hood of the covered box to see if he is straining.
My vet told me he sees a lot of orange cat have urinary blockages.
But then most orange cats are male. I am not sure Vino's fur colour
is considered orange as it is so light.

I think Vino would be considered dilute orange.  He's now 7 years old
and has never had a problem.  I really hope it stays that way.
He eats canned in the morning and at night and he nibbles on dry
during the day.  He does drink water though, I usually see him
drinking at least once a day, so I'm sure he drinks quite a bit.  I've
got water in each bathroom and on the kitchen counter.  He won't drink
if his water is next to his food.  A few times I've caught him
drinking from the toilet.  I know it's gross but I'd rather have that
than have him not drink at all, so I never try to discourage it.
I'd be really freaked out if he started having problems with blockages
because we go away on all these trips.  His maid comes to feed him
twice a day and I know she hangs out in the house watching TV (we come
back to find all the channels changed to Thai) and lately she's even
been brushing him, but I doubt she would keep a close eye on his
litterbox habits and rush him to the vet.  Not that the vets around
here would even know what to do, they rarely see cats, it's all dogs.
People around here don't seem to see cats as pets, many are afraid of
them.

My vet told me the chances of getting a blockage is decreased
as a cat gets past 8. But then I read Jazz got blocked at 12.
Ever since Rusty's blockages, I left detailed instructiond of what
to look for and directions to rush him to the vet. My neigbhour
won't cat sit him anymore and I don't blame her. These days
I board Rusty at his vet when I am away. I don't like having him coop up in
a cage. But it gives me peace of mind that he is in
good hands.
It gets expensive and so I only go away at most 2 weeks. Last time Rusty's
boarding cost as much as a 1 way plane ticket to Vancouver and the boarding
fee keep going up every
year.  :(

Puppies do this.  The last litter I reared totally in the house until they
were 11 weeks old.  Once they were on 6 meals a day after weaning, the
scenario was this:  Cover entire kitchen floor with newspaper.  Put down
food for 6 pups and let them out of their playpen.  The food was hoovered up
in seconds.
Two minutes later, pick up six lots of poo on the newspaper..
