uhoh ... tooth trouble ... big time

Well, I went to my dentist on Friday to find out why one of my molars
has been hurting when I eat hot food.  He determined that I'd probably
need a root canal, but as it was "a bit calcified" and a rear tooth,
he sent me to an endodontist.

Today, I had what was supposed to be my root canal.  As the
endodontist worked, he said things like, "Wow, the xray showed heavy
calcification, but I didn't believe it" and "I've never seen a tooth
this calcified in my life."

Upshot: he can't find a canal.  No root canal for me.

This is not, apparently, good news.  Here are the possibilities:

Very tiny chance that the calcification is fully complete, meaning
that there's no tissue left to cause trouble.  The fact that it's been
irritating me makes this seem unlikely, but maybe.

Much more likely is that there's a small amount of tissue and that it
will cause recurring infections as long as that tooth's around.

My options:

Crown it and hope it goes away.

Keep trying to find the canal, but he would have to go so far in that
he's worried about perforating the root, which would require
extraction of the tooth.  But if the canal can be found, yay team.

Just go ahead and extract the tooth.  Then either leave the space
empty (ugh) or get an implant ($3000).

I don't feel qualified to make these kind of decisions.  It seems like
it's bad news all the way around.

I hate my teeth.

Crown it and see what happens. They are really easy to take off
if need be. With insurance, it should not cost more than about
$500 to have it crowned if the prep work is not too bad.

The specialist suggested waiting 6 months and seeing how it is then
... if the pain's gone away, if it's worse, etc.  But he also told me
to see my dentist and get his opinion on the whole situation, which I
guess is my next step.

The funny part, I guess, is that my body's appropriate response to
trauma (isolating the nerve by blocking up the root canal) is causing
trouble in treatment.  As the specialist said, "Wow, you did your own
root canal.  That's amazing!"  But I guess there's absolutely no way
to find out if the calcification is 100% or not.

One thing you could do in the meantime to manage the pain naturally,
bite on a whole clove where it hurts. Clove oil is a natural analgesic,
my dad uses it all the time when he has a toothache.

I don't think that will help in this case.  The nerve in the tooth is
completely incapable of feeling; I can't feel ice, the pulp test (in
which they basically shock the tooth) did nothing ...

The pain I feel seems to be way up in my jaw somewhere.  The only thing
that causes pain is when the tooth is moved (when the dentist tapped it
sharply, I finally felt that).  When I eat warm food, it seems like
eventually the chewing motion and possibly the radiating warmth gets
its attention.

Thanks for the tip, though.  I may be able to use it at other times.

Ack, that sucks :-(  Fancy a holiday in Thailand?  You could get that
implant for a couple hundred and have a nice holiday to boot!

Tempting for sure, but I can't afford the money or time to fly there
=/

On the plus side, I'm having a lot of fun at my new job.
