Hi all:
We've got a few more details now that Fred and the kids went over to visit
the family that found Otis.
Otis got into their house shortly after I saw him at 5:00 PM Wednesday
night. For the next twenty-four hours, the home owners thought they were
imagining things. Every once and a while, they'd hear a sound like a herd
of elephants and see a dark grey flash of fur running downstairs. Once down
there, he hid very effectively.
I guess that the window was pushed in a little bit by them and Otis dropped
in the room that way. The problem was that it was a small window, right
near the ceiling, and it had no ledge. Once in, Otis couldn't leap back out
the same way. You can just imagine him as the realization sunk in. You can
imagine it when the people upstairs came home and he heard all these strange
people upstairs. He did what any cat would do - got really really small and
made himself invisible ... and he must have drunk from the toilet since he
did that as soon as he came home. Ewwwwwwwwww!
When they went out, he'd come out and explore the house to find a way out
... then they'd come home, surprise him, and down into the basement he'd go
again.
We were very concerned about the fact that he had pulled their front window
curtains down and Fred went over to make amends. They said that there was
no lasting damage to the curtains and that he'd just had "a neat little
crap" in the corner "no muss no fuss". The husband said - "that's why you
have cats - they're so athletic and graceful". Wow - Otis sure picked the
right house.
Anyway, I can't believe that he was in their house for 24 hours. He's soooo
skittish now too and any sudden movement gets him down on the floor in a
hyper-alert crouch. He'll relax soon enough but, for now, he's happy just
to hang with us and stay in the backyard again.
We had a dinner party on Saturday night and we all sat outside to eat and
visit. Otis was making me jealous lavishing affection on all the people.
He kept jumping up on the lap of a man I know from the BOD of Jane's
school - he's a burly police officer who was obviously very flattered by the
attention :-) AND, I accidentally had too much wine (forgot to alternate
with water) so I apologize for my Saturday night posts. I was out of line
and should have kept my mouth shut on anything controversial - which, until
then, I had done for seven years on this group. Two notes to self - always
alternate with water and *never* go to the computer if I've forgotten to do
that.
AND, I never mentioned that the boys had their annual physicals and shots a
couple of weeks ago. Otis has gone from 14.5 lbs to 13.4 pounds - the vet
thinks that he's be in top fighting shape at 12 lbs but he looks and feels
pretty good to me at this weight. It's amazing how noticeable a one pound
drop is in a cat. Chester responded well again this year to the prednisone
along with his shots - he didn't have a fever or mope around for days like
he does without the prednisone. Chester needs a full dental. IT IS SO
EXPENSIVE. He's to get blood tests and such and then have the dental right
after. I know that I shouldn't delay or it'll be worse for Chester's teeth
but I haven't yet got my head around having him go under *and* the $400
surgery tag - and this is from someone who would do anything for her owners.

Hopefully this will teach him to keep his furry little butt close to home
from now on! ;>

I don't remember you saying anything out of line or nasty!!

Purrs that the dental goes well and also for your finances (I know - it
seems to cost so much more for the cats' vet than it does for our own
doctors, but then we have medical insurance that covers 95% of all costs, so
it just seems that it's more expensive).

Cats aren't stupid. Otis wasn't going to go into the evil cat haters'
house. ;)
And he tried to make his presence as inobtrusive as possible for them.
Smokey would probably have been passed out in the middle of their
couch, if it was HIM in that situation.
He was an ex-feral for less than 24 hours before he was passed out on
OUR couch.

Holy cow! I don't recall paying that much for Xoxo's dental a couple of
years back... wait, is that in Canadian or US dollars? What's the rate
these days anyway?

$400 Can is not bad. My mom paid around $300 Can. for Scruffy's dental more
than 10 years ago. I think the bulk of the
cost is with anaethesia.
BTW, $400 is around $320 U.S. Still a good chunk of money.
That reminds me I better go brush Rusty's teeth. The brushing
seems to help with his teeth.

to piggyback. How lucky you all were that someone cared enough to call and
just wrote off any damage.

I love the concept of accidentally having too much wine. I might try it
myself if I knew how <g>

You do it on purpose then? :D
Argh - I remain shaking my head. I get so excited when we have company
over - cook a nice meal, sit outside with good friends, great conversation
and music - and I just start guzzling whatever is in my glass with the
excitement of it all. It really doesn't matter at all what's in the glass
either. I do well by drinking a lime flavoured Perrier knock-off and have a
great time. Sometimes I just forget to haul out the Perrier. Grrrrrrr...

Not often. Although, I am invited to a neighbour's party on Saturday
evening when we all have to dress in deliberately bad taste. I shall
definitely do it then :-)

It's lovely to have friends over and share meals and drinks together. It
doesn't hurt once in a while to have too much wine ;-)
Last time the neighbours had a similar party I watched Andy from
next-door-but-one fall back off (and with) his chair into the hedge in the
middle of what he thought was a very important conversation (by him)
He emerged in 30 seconds. "You don't think I'm p***ed do you?"
ROFL. No, of course not Andy!

Jeepers, now I feel cheap for complaining to my vet about the $240 tag
on Tuppence's dentals (includes the full blood work up, not the quickie
one and the pulling of two teeth).

Note to self: No more complaining about the price of vet care.

Don't know this one Victor - are you laughing at me now because the joke is
obvious??

It's a funny joke:
The new priest was so nervous at his first mass, he could hardly speak.
Before his second appearance in the pulpit, he asked the Monsignor how
he could relax. The Monsignor said, "Next Sunday, it may help if you put
some vodka in the water pitcher. After a few sips everything should go
smoothly."
The next Sunday the new priest put the suggestion into practice and was
able to talk up a storm. He felt great! However, upon returning to the
rectory he found a note from the Monsignor:
Dear Father,
1. Next time sip rather than gulp.
2. There are 10 commandments, not 12.
3. There are 12 disciples, not 10.
4. We do not refer to the Cross as the "Big T''.
5. The recommended grace before meals is not "Rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for
the grub. Yeah God!''
6. We do not refer our Savior, Jesus Christ and his Apostles as "J.C.
and the Boys''.
7. David slew Goliath, he did not "Kick the sh.t out of him''.
8. Moses parted the water at the Red Sea, he didn't pass water.
9. We don't refer to Judas as "El Finko''.
10. The Pope is consecrated not castrated, and we don't refer to him as
"The Godfather''.
11. When Jesus broke the bread at the Last Supper he said, "Take this
and eat it, for it is my body,'' he did not say, "Eat me.''
12. David was hit by a rock and knocked off his donkey, he wasn't
"stoned off his a.s''.
13. The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost are never referred to as "Big
Daddy, Junior, and the Spook.''
14. It is always the Virgin Mary, never "Mary with the Cherry''.

I had to laugh at the "tidy little crap" :-) Sounds like he did pick
the right people's house.
Alternate wine with water??? I wish I had that kind of self control,
but it has yet to happen. BTW, I didn't think that anything you wrote
was out of line.
So glad your boys had a good physical. Can't believe how much a full
dental costs :-( I think we paid $150 for Vino's in 2000.
