I think probably this is the cause of her fairly frequent and wierd vomiting
attacks. She started this morning at 5 a.m. She has always occassionally
coughed and that triggers heaving (she *does* have a hair trigger gag
mechanism. Giving her laxatone or if she sniffs a food she doesn't like, she
will gag) but it was every 3 hours today, so, concerned I scooted her to the
emergency vet. I couldn't hear wheezing (she also growls a little so it is
hard) but the vet could hear marked wheezing with the stethescope. The xrays
didn't look bad but the tissue looked slightly textured so of course, you
can't say for sure, but her heart sounded good and her pulse was good and
everything was respritory. Didn't hear or see any fluid. It all seemed
bronchial and not by the lungs. I have to say, I've wondered a little, but
it did not look *just* like the Fritz the Cat video, but similar and ever
since I saw that whenever it was someone posted here, I did wonder. It's
what made me say, OK, let's go to the vet NOW while it is happening today.
So we have pred pills and will start with two pills a day and taper down and
see how she does. She has never (to my knowledge) had the full fledge deal
like Julie's Sam. I have however heard what seems to be a snore, but maybe
it was a wheeze. I don't know. I will take the xrays to my regular vet
tomorrow and the emergency vet has faxed her write up over there. I wonder
if she had a little fit while eating last week and that is what made her
temporarily scared of her food dish. Well, it's sure a bad time for the cats
of RPCA. I hope we don't have any more trouble since we got the pred. I hope
pilling goes better. She really gets UPSET about that. Wish us luck.

Oh Karen, after Grant I know that must have been a huge scare for you!
Purrs coming that Sugar will be fine now.

I know how that goes, Karen. Best of luck and I hope this does the
trick.

Purrs for Pearl to take the pills like a good girl, and not like Rusty.
Hope the pills work for her. I remember those mad dashes to the
emergency vets. Very stressful. One time I took a cab to the
emergency vet at 5am and forgot my wallet!

Awwww - the poor girl. I'm glad to read that you might have a diagnosis so
can help her - not that she'll see the pilling as helping. There has *got*
to be a better way to get meds into cats! Take care and keep us updated!

Thanks guys. So far so good. She is sure looking better than earlier today.

P.S. any tips welcome. Feeling a little worried right now. She hasn't
coughed though since we gave her the pred. Previously, she was coughing
about every two hours today. That's good but I think that means it's fairly
affirmative.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with an asthmatic cat (I believe one of
"Mary's" cats has asthma but can't remember if it's Buddha or Cheeks that
has it - Cheeks, I believe). All I can do is send purrs that she stays
well.

Oh no, Karen. Much luck with the pilling, and purrs that it will be
fixed for a long time with this course of prednisone, so you don't have
to pill her every day, like I had to pill Nikki. IIRC, the cat in the
video didn't quite cough like Nikki did; the cat in the video kept
lifting his head up and stretching his neck, while Nikki would hunch
over and cough with her neck stretched along the floor. Sometimes
coughing made her throw up, too. I was never quite sure whether she was
snoring or wheezing when she slept, but her breathing was always noisy.
Oh how I wish I'd gotten her on inhaled meds. The vets here didn't seem
to have a clue about that. :o( Again, many many purrs for you and Pearl
to beat this.

thanks. Hopefully once we taper off his batch it will be good. I will
consult with her regular vet tomorroe, who is a feline vet and see what they
say. If she gets worse again, I will seriously consider a neubulizer or
aerokat. But I don't think she has ever had a full blown attack yet. But
this was bad enough. Thanks for the thoughts.

I somehow missed this post. Poor Pearl!! I really hope the pills work,
and the pilling goes smoothly. Seems like we read about a lot of cats
with asthma. Hang in there, Karen. Purrs that she will be OK. Let us
know what the reg. vet says.

Tricked her! I was really worried about pilling her. She got really upset at
the vets. And you know, she gags when I give her laxatone for heavens sakes.
I was going to use the pill gun, and then I thought, hmm...I have this can
of a/d which she *really* thinks is the yummy food (very fat food). The
pills are little, so I balled up the a/d around it. She ate it right up! I
followed it with a plain ball of food. Boy did that make me happy. She
didn't even know she'd been pilled. Of course, I also discovered they did
not give me enough pills for all they said to give her. hmmm. I'm going to
have a word with my vet about the new emergency vet clinic. I mean, they
didn't charge me for more than ten but 3 pills today, 2 a day for the next
three days, and 1 every other day after that "until they run out" (I would
assume eight days if you are weaning exactly) is more than 10 pills. I count
at the very least 17. I sure hope they really are 5 mg. (I think that at
least is correct. They look like 5 mg pills.) But I'm glad she just ate it.
Hope I can continue to do it that way and she doesn't catch on.
Yeah, there really are a lot of troubles. Horses too have a lot of trouble.
I know that everyone boggles at Tim Ritchey for not giving Afleet Alex any
hay, but he says that there is just too much mold and other contaminents
even in high grade hay. Horses that go to Saudi Arabia do not have as many
breathing problems as here. Dogs and cats too have so many allergies and
people as well. Just makes you wonder.
She has not coughed at all since her first dose at the vets. She was
coughing about every two hours prior to that. She also has her ears perked
up, which I noticed she was not doing before. In fact, I don't think she was
perking her ears yesterday either. I remember thinking maybe her ears itched
(although we had checked those and they were clean). I think maybe her ears
are a good barometer.
Yipee! Now we can go to bed. I really, really want to talk to my vet
tomorrow. I sure hope she is in and has some time to see me.

oops. there is 1 a day for four days before the one everyother day until
running out. When I went back and read this I realized you would all think I
am nuts.

Yes, it does make you wonder. My son has awful allergies and sleep
apnea. After he moved out 2 years ago, they got majorly WORSE. I
thought that he would start to outgrow them, and moving away from the
cats would help. But it didn't. I think we have no choice but to start
looking at allergy testing, and he has no insurance :-(
BTW, he makes this snorting noise a lot. I wonder if that's why Pearl
snorts. :-)

You know, I was thinking about that last night too. Or the little huff huff
noises if Sugar upsets her. But it always seems so immediately in response
to a situation and doesn't go on. I don't know!

I'm so sorry, Karen, but I'm glad it's treatable. My Sabra was on
pred for many years without a problem, and it helped him tremendously.
You might want to ask about Albuterol and Atrovent, too, with a spacer
like Aerokat or something similar. That always helped Sabra when he
was having an actual attack.
Best of luck to you and Pearl.
