Tyler, my latest goofball addition to the furry family has got himself
stuck down behind my corner bookcase.

All of my cats have explored down there at one time or another. The
bookcase has shelves that extend along the two walls of the room, with a
section of shelves that sort of cuts across the corner of the room on an
angle, if that makes sense. There's a gap behaind that angled section
that's big enough for a cat to climb down, but it's really difficult for
the cat to climb out again as the back of the bookcase is smooth, and he
can't get a toehold.

My usual way of extracting a cat from this corner has been to hang my
very large bath towel over the back of the bookcase and encourage said
feline to climb up it. This they normally do with great enthusiasm. All
of my cats have got stuck and been removed this way once (in fact Sir
Stirling the Silly has done it several times).

Tyler won't. He is sitting very quietly at the bottom of the triangular
space, and occasionally washes himself, but I can't persuade him to try
and climb out. He looks calm, but he could be stressed. Or he could be
enjoying himself in his new dark den.

Any suggestions? I don't really want to have to violently dismantle the
bookcase - of course I will if the little beggar, sorry, little
sweetheart, can't be persuaded to help himself out by dinner time...

How much room do you have behind the bookcase?  Could you lower a
kitten-sized basket behind there?  I keep thinking of something like finding
a long thick piece of lumber that you could staple some carpeting to and
lean back in that space like a ramp for Tyler to climb up, or even a long
tree branch (if one could be found). Nail some curtain material against the
back wall and try and encourage him to climb up by dangling a long string
against the fabric...ack, I wish I had some good ideas for you -- meanwhile,
many purrs for the little one and for you to figure out a solution that
doesn't involve dismantling the bookcase.

I'm afraid it seems to me that he is enjoying his little hidey hole, and
won't come out until he is good and ready. The bath towel sounds like an
excellent device, as your other cats have proved. Purrs that Tyler
decides to use it soon!

I suspect you may be right, and he's having a good laugh down there at
my expense. He does seem a lot less worried than I am.

After at least four hours I managed to coax him out. He wouldn't touch
the bath towel, but he did show some interest in a long cardboard tube I
pushed down the gap. It wasn't really big enough for him to get a good
hold on though. Then I remembered seeing him sharpening his claws on the
sides of a big empty cardboard box, so I cut the box open down one side
and opened it out flat, and cut a few holes in the card like the
handholds that the box manufacturers had already cut. I pushed the
resulting long sheet of corrugated board down the back of the bookcase.
With a little encouragement he managed to climb up it like a ladder
until he was high enough for me to grab him by the shoulders and pull
him out. He seems glad to be out and isn't leaving my side now!

Tomorrow I'll get a bit of plywood and some brackets from the hardware
shop and cover the gap up properly.

I'm going to have to get Orly a new cardboard box too.

I have a better idea - build a permanent stepladder so that the cats
can have fun there anytime they want. :)

Heh heh... nope, they're welcome to play on the permanent step ladder
that's the front of the bookcase. On the rare occasions that there's a
bit of space on a shelf, they have been known to climb up and park
themselves in it. Besides, once I've covered over the gap, I'll be able
to pile some more books on top of the thing!

I'm glad you got him out! Scout hid in behind the stove and I had to
pull it right out of its space to get her out - I'm not sure if she
was stuck or just still scared of our visitors (who'd gone home an
hour before) Either way, she wasn't budging!

The phrase 'B*st*rd cat trick' springs to mind.

Indeed, the phrase "B*st*ard cat" passed my lips more than once today.
On the bright side, I suppose the new fellows now feel settled enough to
start playing these things on me.

Please let us know when he decides to come out. Do you guys have that self
adhesive carpeting squares there? You could maybe stick some of those on the
backside for climbing purposes.
