CatNipped - 25 Jun 2005 22:46 GMT Sorry Dan, when I saw Phillip's response to your post in rpch+b I blew my top and used language that would shock my mom! You are the one who is helping to clean up the mess *HE* made by turning Conan back into a kill shelter just because he didn't want to pay $200 for lab tests for the little fellow and he has the nerve to bait you about picking up Conan *now* of all times when you are battling to save your own little girl's life and facing thousands of dollars in vet bills to do it - well, it just made my blood boil.
Hugs,
CatNipped

I must admit, my eyebrows did raise a little when I read Conans story, poor kitty. I think what sickened me, was the fact he *swapped* Conan for a new kitten. The fact that a cat is a sentient being and a *life* that he just felt able to throw away sickened me.
I'm just saying a prayer for all the "unlucky ones". :o(

Conan wasn't even that sick, he just had a URI (I don't think I've ever seen a kitten from a shelter that didn't have "kennel cough"! Many what a jerk! And I *KNOW* he's doing all that just to bait people, but when he said that to Dan I swear I would have slapped him if he had been standing in front of me just then! <trying to calm down>

This is just what we were talking about. Dragging the nastiness over here. Don't take this wrong, CN, I'm not attacking you personally. I hate to see the Conan/Phillip thing start up all over again. It was bad enough reading it the first time.

Enfilade - 25 Jun 2005 23:23 GMT I have never been to rpch+b before, and I may never go again.
All I can say is: Nox got a hernia from her botched spay. We could've traded her in for another cat, no problems, or we could take her to another vet and cough up for surgery hoping it would save her. I think everyone here is clear on which one we chose, and why.
Dan--please tell us how it goes. I would love to hear about Conan /here/, away from his unpleasant past, away from his history with people on other groups, and focus on his present.

jmcquown - 26 Jun 2005 02:44 GMT > I have never been to rpch+b before, and I may never go again. I still never have gone. I've never read a post here that had anything good to say about what goes on over there. I'm sure there are some fine folks, maybe lots of the ones from here, but I've never seen anyone post "hey, you need to go read this great thread in rpch+b!" Quite the opposite.
MaryL - 26 Jun 2005 06:52 GMT >> I have never been to rpch+b before, and I may never go again. >> [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > you > need to go read this great thread in rpch+b!" Quite the opposite. Actually, some of the people who post here are the very ones who like to create flames in rpch+b. In fact, they will sometimes refer to the idea that it is not acceptable to post that type of language and flame wars in anecdotes, but they seem to think that it is somehow alright to perpetuate it in rpch+b. I am very disappointed in that attitude. Health+behav used to be an extremely useful newsgroup, and sometimes it still is -- but, in my opinion, much of its usefulness has been ruined by people who seem to enjoy engaging in flame wars just to see their nastiness in print; they deliberately post malicious messages just to bait others to respond in kind. This is really a shame because some of them have excellent knowledge of cats, and they could share that knowledge with others. Instead, they are driving others away.

Bullying is unbecoming to you. But > of course you know that. I will make this my last message because I really am not trying to start another flame war in this group. I did not mention Lori or anyone else; I referred to "some" people. And, no, I did not pick up any information from Sherry. I was alluding to a concern that I have had for quite some time -- that is, that health+behav once was a newsgroup where we could go to to get help with cats, but it has degenerated into a series of flame wars that is threatening to overwhelm any helpfulness offered by the group (something that has admittedly happened in the past, as this seems to go in cycles). I have also been aware for a long time of the irony of people posting in anecdotes in a "friendly" manner and then posting in rpch+b in the most unpleasant way possible. I truly do think this is unfortunate because there are so many people on that group who could share information with others -- and there are also so many who could learn but who have simply become completely disgusted with the vitriolic displays of ill will. The Conan thread that you have been active in is an example of how that group can come together as a positive force, and I would like to see more emphasis on that type of action.

Well, perhaps this concern is best expressed in H+B. The nice people here have requested that you leave what happens there in that group, right?

Tish Silberbauer - 26 Jun 2005 10:26 GMT Our dinner tonight was marinated hard, fried tofu (beancurd) with straw mushrooms and lots of stirfried veggies over egg noodles. It was surprisingly bland, considering all the flavours that had gone into the tofu marinade and the stirfry sauce. Still, very tasty indeed and a good warming things for a wintery night (it's the depths of winter here in the southern hemisphere)

Mary - 26 Jun 2005 20:50 GMT > >What are grape tomatoes? > > Small tomatoes, about the size and shape of grapes. The ones I have had are not nearly as good as Roma for sweetness and redness. But then again, in-season rich red ripe NC garden tomatoes beat Romas! I eat them sliced with just a bit of salt and pepper and the tiniest dab of homemade mayo. Okay, it's a dollop. :) I love summer.

My mom and both grandmothers insisted that some people just oozed cooking out of their pores. One grandma could bake wonderful pies, cakes, cookies, etc., but couldn't season food to save her life. She tried, bless her heart, but she just didn't have the knack. Nor do most of her daughters.
The other grandma could cook wonderful savory stuff, but baking was totally beyond her capabilities. Dad inherited that from her. He was a great cook until he got sick. Practice also helps. I can do both but only if I'm in the mood. Other wise who knows how it will turn out. It is usually passable, but nothing spectacular, unless I'm in the mood. Then it is very good.

My SIL has tried, and I have tried, and my sisters have tried, but none of us can make it quite as delicious as my Mum, though we use the exact same recipe. And it's a very simple one, too.

I'm guessing that for one reason or another she doesn't follow the recipe exactly.
I don't know if anyone still does it, but it used to be fairly common for some folks to not give an accurate recipe when asked to share.
But I'm guessing that you mom alters the cake mixture or baking as a habit and doesn't even think about it.

Its obviously a relation to Thai Red Curry, as it has similar sorts of flavours (ie, coconut milk, chilli, coriander, lemongrass, star anise etc etc) and has rice noodles. Other than that, its similar to any Asian soup, you can add what you like to go with it, such as fish balls, chicken, prawns, spring onions, etc etc. But every laksa I"ve had has had the fried bean curd (tofu) which seems to serve the same purpose as croutons in European soups - they suck up the flavour of the soup and add an interesting texture with a very subtle flavour.
I *love* laksa.
South East Asian food is very popular here in Australia.

They are extremely good but we always get lots of peaches so they aren't the treat they should be. Some have been packed off to the neighbors, some will go into a cobbler. I'll probably cook and freeze filling for another cobbler. Then I need to figure out if I can freeze the rest just with fruit fresh and Splenda.
Note: Even good peaches can be lacking in flavor when cooked. I've taken to adding a bit of peach schnapps to my cobblers.
I always top cobblers with a biscuit type topping. I used to use the shortcake recipe on the Bisquick box and drop the mixture on top of hot fruit filling in spoonfuls and bake till golden. Now I just add melted butter and Splenda to the drop biscuit recipe. And cinnamon. If I want a more cake like topping, I add a little extra milk and a beaten egg. Then I sprinkle a bit of Splenda on the top after its baked.
Hmmm. Peach Ice cream would be good right about now too.

badwilson - 27 Jun 2005 03:11 GMT I made a mexican meatloaf (or is that metalloid???). Mix together put in pyrex dish, bake in oven (or in my case in the BBQ since my oven hasn't worked in 4 years). Yum! Dan M - 26 Jun 2005 16:36 GMT Everybody, please - let's not descend to the h+b levels of sniping. I know that some amount of disagreement and temper is going to occur in any group, but we've recently been seeing a lot more of that in here. This is a tight, supportive, loving group and we don't need that. We REALLY don't need that. There are issues currently active in which people (including me!) need support, and having all this fighting going on makes it harder to do that.
Might I request that issues of this sort be moved to another group? Preferably not h+b; there is useful information discussed there as well. Perhaps one of the alt. groups, since it's easy to create new groups in the alt domain when necessary.

Good for you Dan, for trying to find a way to help Conan, even in the midst of your worry over Harri. Francesca also had a URI when I took her home for the first time, and it was serious enough to keep her from getting spayed since the humane society vet judged she couldn't be safely anesthetized. Fortunately, for darling Nina's sake! =o) But I took Francesca anyway as I knew she'd get better faster away from all the other coughing sneezing kitties at the Humane Society. This wasn't meant in any way to > start controversy over here, just the opposite in fact. Not a problem anyhow. The person in question was in my killfile before I even posted there, so I haven't even seen anything he's posted. And even if I did, I'm quite adept at ignoring messages that displease me :)
