My ISP's newsserver has been down for over 2 hours, so I'm giving
news.readfreenews.net a try, hopefully I'll be able to use it as a
backup.

I've been fairly OK with the new Beta-version of Google Groups for one
group that my ISP doesn't provide at all (in spite of repeated requests).

I tried Google before I tried other news servers, I prefer to read using
Outlook Express because that's what I'm used to. Thanks for the thought
though, at least I know one way or another I can at least read this
group.

Thanks for the tip re readfreenews.net. I also signed up with them, and
noticed they provide the ng I mentioned above, but when I tried to post
thru them (via Mozilla Thunderbird, as I don't use OE) it didn't work.
Is there a trick or catch to using their services or do I have to wait a
while for connections to work?

Sorry to cause confusion, I couldn't post via readfreenews either, only
read. Now posting using news.aioe.org

Well, thanks again, two good tips in one day! :) It's good to have a few
backup plans, if only to read a group (via readfreenews). And aioe.org
also provides the ng I mentioned earlier, the one my ISP doesn't have.

No, I haven't used uni-berlin since they started charging, I use my
ISP's server instead, mainly because they carry the binary groups and
have been pretty reliable up to now.

I had problems with mine the other day.  Here I wasted at least an hour
doing maintenance on my PC (okay, it needed tweaking anyway) before I
checked my ISP's telco forum on the web and found a post from the
"newsmaster" explaining they were working on replacing routers or something.
I suppose I could always post via Google but I hate their groups interface.

I'm glad to say it's back up this morning. I had emailed my ISP and got
a reply, it should be back by Tuesday am. I'm glad it was a lot sooner
than that.

Techs like to give themselves an extra "window" because you never know
what's going to happen when there are problems.  I'm glad they got you back
up and running so quickly!  My ISP is also my local phone company and they
are very good about fast fixes.
