... I should be on the island. It's Midsummer weekend in Finland (our
midsummer holidays are always moved to a weekend so the national economy
doesn't suffer too much ;o) ). Most people get the Friday off and
Saturday is a national holiday. So, normally I would have headed out to
the island with the cats on Thursday evening or Friday morning. But this
year everything's different.
My summer hols start in one week, and I would have to come back to town
on Sunday. Normally, I would leave the cats on the island in the capable
care of their Grandmeowmie. This year, I thought it wouldn't be wise.
First of all, Frank would be so lonely without both me and Nikki.
Second, since Miranda doesn't eat cat food, but only meat and fish, it
would be difficult for her Grandmeowmie to get her enough to eat. There
are no shops on the island, and we don't go shopping very often as it
involves a boat trip to another island with a village, or another island
yet, where there's a small town. The grocery shop in the village doesn't
have a lot to choose from in the way of fresh meat. I just feel it would
be too much work to lay on my mother if she had to worry about getting
Miranda enough food.
So we're all still in town. We'll be leaving for the island on the 4th
or 5th. I'll be interested to see how Miranda acts on the long bus trip.
When I took her to TED's, she cringed at the back of her carrier in
terror, poor baby. I hope she can relax a bit more on this trip. How
she'll react to the boat trip is anyone's guess. When her mother took
her first boat trip, she promptly fell asleep. Frank will probably
regale me and the whole bus with his enthusiastic (NOT) songs for the
whole trip.
I'll stay on the island for about three weeks, then I come back to town
and start packing for my move, while the cats stay on the island. I'm
hoping Frank will be getting along better with Mir-mir by that time, and
there will be others who can help to look after the cats (among them my
niece, Miranda's first Meowmie). Maybe Miranda and her brother Emil will
get along so well that she'll leave Frank alone.
I hope to have the move done with, unpacking and being back on the
island in ten days' time. Might be somewhat optimistic. :oP Then I bring
the cats back to their new home.

Don't worry us with headers like that! Purrs that your trip to the
island and your subsequent move go without a hitch. I'm sure Miranda
will love the island and won't want to leave.

Sorry, Adrian, I didn't realise the header could be scary. Thanks for
the purrs. I'm hoping Miranda will get all the climbing out of her
system while we're there (fat chance!).

Happy Midsummer Weekend! I'm sure Frank and Mere will be happy to be on
the island, even if it's later than usual. Can Frank read a calendar? ;-)

You know, I think he can. He's been very discontented these last few
days. I think he's itching to go. Well, maybe he can't read the
calendar, but he's probably aware of the seasons and knows that when
it's this light outside, he's usually on the island.

Gosh, whenever you go I will very much miss you. Always do. Purrs for having
what you need to feed Mir. I wish she was a heartier eater! I want you to
take care of yourself!!! It will be hard this summer I know.

Thank you Karen, I think it will be pretty hard, since watching Nikki
bloom on the island was one of my greatest joys out there.
When Miranda was recovering from her spay, she had a huge appetite, and
I was hoping she would have a better appetite from then on, but not
anymore. However, she seems fine and is active and playful (too much so
sometimes!), so I think she is doing OK anyway. I do give her
supplements every day, and the vet told me to give a little more than
the recommended dosage.

Have you tried pouring stew/soup gravy over dry kibbles? Or sprinkling
boulin cubes (dehydrated chicken stock) over her food giving it a human-ish
smell?
Goofy cat ;)

We will certainly be purring that the move goes quickly, and that the
kitties have a wonderful time on the island. You have a great time on
the island, too! We'll be anxious to hear some stories about the island
adventure.

She hasn't somehow grown out of that? She must be the finickiest cat,
a cat that doesn't eat any catfood. :) How did that start? I don't
imagine all her littermates are also non-catfood eaters.
Oh, if Nikki was still here, she could teach Miranda how to catch all
the fresh meat she needs. Do you need to fish everyday at the island
now in order to feed her? :) Hope she gets along with Emil. Maybe
they'll remember each other.

I don't know how it started, but her brother Emil will only eat dry
food. A bunch of spoiled little brats. I just tried giving her some
catfood again. I took a little morsel on a spoon and showed her, she
gave it a quick sniff, then ignored it. I put some on her plate and cut
it up in nice small pieces. She took another sniff, then ignired it. A
little later she went over and started burying it. Argh! And she hasn't
eaten much meat today, either. OTOH, I was eating a carrot just now, and
she was veeerry interested and wanted to sniff it several times, but I
think she decided it was too hard for her to eat.

I was really looking forward to Nikki teaching her how to hunt. It would
have been so cool if she had taught Miranda how to dive for those water
voles.

I wonder if you ground up her meat that she likes and made it more like
catfood if you could get her to transition that way?

Yeah, maybe grinding up the meat and then slowly adding more and more
canned cat food to it might work.

That's too bad you had to miss the Midsummer celebrations on the
island. I hope that they will have some other celebrations going on
when you arrive.
How come Miranda doesn't eat cat food? She just doesn't like it?
What about her littermates, are they the same way?
