The Yowlet has croup. The reason I'm up at 4am is that his barking cough is
keeping me awake because I am worried about him. I'm sure he'll survive and
be fine, after all, croup is just one of those childhood diseases these days
and is rarely anything more than a scary sounding cough. But like any Mum,
espeically a "new" one, I'm still worried about my little guy.

On top of that, I lost my car key today. Not my *keys*, just my stupid car
key.  I must have lost it between the car park at work and my office, but I
retraced my steps twice, and thoroughly searched my office, but no key. Nor
had it been handed in to security. Why anyone would keep a car key with no
indentification on it is beyond me, because would quite obviously be a key
of one of their co-workers. Its one of those stupid ones with a chip in it
and I can't just get our spare copied - I need to get a replacement with the
proper programming of the chip. I am still absolutely boggled how I could
lose a single *key* when I never ever remove any of them from my keyring.

*sigh*

D*mn, I can't wait for this week to be over.

Are you sure you lost it?  You said you never remove it from key ring, so is
there any way that someone at the office could have removed it?  Were your
keys left at your desk while you were away for awhile, and do others have
access?  This could be a concern, and you might be wise to have the lock
reprogrammed when you order another key.  I do realize that those keys are
expensive, but I think the other key(s) could be reprogrammed to match
whatever change is made.  In fact, you usually have to leave all keys and
have them programmed simultaneously.  It's not as simple as just having one
key worked on.  Of course, all of this is a moot point if you have one of
those key rings where individual keys are on "toggle" connections.  In that
case, it really would be possible for a single key to fall off (and then you
should dump your purse upside down and completely empty the contents, in
case the key worked its way into the lining).

I'm sorry to hear about Carey.  I know how scary croup can be - Sam has had
it multiple times and sometimes very seriously.  The peds always said to get
him outside in cool moist air.  I would bring him home from the hospital,
open the windows in winter and stick on the humidifier and that gave him
relief.

The key is very weird.

Eek. But croup sounds SO painful and you feel so bad for them. I'm sure
he'll be fine, but that doesn't make you feel any better when he is sick.
Sorry about the key. That really sucks :(  I hope you find it.

Purrs for all of you.  My son had croup when he was about six months old.
He was hospitalized for a couple of days.  I'm not sure if they gave him
antibiotics.  I think the main thing they did for him was to put him in a
sort of tent with a humidifier going.  Maybe you could improvise something
like that for the Yowlet.

Hugs and purrs,

My brother used to get croup when he was little. Mum used to fill a
kettle with water and boil it in the bedroom (away from the bed) with
the door closed, deliberately keeping it boiling so plenty of steam came
out for ages, and that added humidity to the air easing the dry cough.
Don't know if that might help a little?

Purrs for Cary to get better soon and his Mum's frazzled nerves to be
calmed- and key to turn up!!

((((Yowie)))) --  I'm sorry about how hard it is for you nowadays -- I do
remember croup with both my kids; I remember taking Celeste, in particular,
into a steamy bathroom in the middle of the  winter night and then wrapping
her in blankets and sitting out on the front steps to let the cold air open
up her airways -- there were a lot of star-gazing nights. Many purrs from us
that Cary recovers well and quickly from his illness.  Many hugs from us for
you to help cope with that damnable lack of sleep and all the little daily
problems that seem to build up so quickly.

I would like to apologize for my earlier message.  I was immediately struck
by the possibility that the key could have been taken by someone in the
office, and I focused exclusively on that.  I didn't even refer to the part
of the your message that is much more important -- that is, Cary's health.
I do hope he is doing better now.

Yowie...as someone posted, warm moisture to your Yowlet's lungs will be of
some help for his comfort.
I dunno what the deal is in OZ, but in USA dealers usually include
*two*factory-coded keys when you buy the car (natch I have no idea whether
you drive a USA-
made car or whether this is the way things go where you are!) Anyway, either
ask Joel if he didn't put away the *other* coded key or if he can't recall,
call the local dealer. Here those keys, duplicated w/factory coding, are on
the high side of $200. I have been through this w/Ford (and no comments re
the fake cat beheading tv commercial: that is so last year.....). Hope to
have been of help & meatloaf meds for your boy.

Purrs for the Yowlet to make a quick recovery from the croup.  And
that really sucks about your key.  Purrs that it turns up somewhere so
you don't have to order another one.

Yowie,
Croup is scary.  I remember how that feels to be up at 4 am just to make
sure the Molly was breathing.  I knew she was, but I just *HAD* to keep
checking.  The good thing is that is relatively short lived.

I hope you find the key.  I live in constant fear that DH and I will lose
ours.  At least he has a spare to mine.  We don't have an extra for his, and
yes, it is the chipped kind.

Purrs, hugs, and doggie drool for all of you.

Frogmella had croup about five months ago.  It was no big deal; it just
sounded *awful*.  It wasn't serious and it didn't need any treatment.
And it seamlessly segued, on the third day, into yet another of her
fortnight-long cough-fests.

Sorry I have no advice for you on dealing with it.  The lack of sleep
thing is a complete sod, innit?

That thing with the key is very strange.

Talking about gettinge nough sleep sleep to a new parent is like talking
about a night long bombastic orgy to a person suffering from involutary
celibacy.

And I used to wonder why 40% of the adult population were chronically sleep
deprived.

Yeah and they are all married to one from the other 60% who can't hear
anything between midnight and seven AM.

I have to plead guilty here.  Charlie did most of the night time getting up.
My daughter and I visited my Mom for two weeks when Vicki was six months
old.  I came home exhausted from doing all the getting up myself.  Not that
Mom wasn't up too, but I didn't want her thinking I wasn't/.

When Froggie was recently born, I had this leaflet that said "it is
essential for every new mother to have a rest and put her feet up every
afternoon while the baby naps".

I threw it across the room & sobbed uncontrollably.

How is the Yowlet's croup, and are you getting any sleep yet?

The croup has cleared up, thankfullly. He's still got a little bit of a
cough, but its a *little* cough and only happens as he's waking up. Now, if
I didn't have a husband *wink* I would have had a wonderful night's sleep

Its aqmazing. The doctor said there was nothing much we could do for croup,
but I followed people's advice form here, and stuck Cary in the bathroom
with me while Ihad a shower. 10 minutes of steam therapy later, and its gone
from a really bad seal-barking cough that kept him (and me) awake at night
to a regular chldhood occasional cough.

Thankyou everybody for their purrs and advice.

Still no sign of the blasted thing. I"m going to have to tidy up my office
now. Is this punishment for not giving it a thorough cleaning for all the
time I've had this office? (approx 6 years?)

It works for a dog or cat with a barking type cough too.  Much faster and
easier to deal with than a humidifier.

Have you really totally thoroughly turned out your purse/pocketbook where
the keys were?  I find the most amazing things in mine when I search the
pockets I never mean to use.

Charlie lost his car key too and I just know the danged thing will turn up
as soon as I pay for a replacement.

I didn't put the keys in my handbag/purse/pocketbook, I just carried my
wallet/purse and keys into work that afternoon.

> Charlie lost his car key too and I just know the danged thing will turn up

The key was found just as soon as I had lost it, in the corridor outside my
office. But instead of sending an e-mail around to ask if anyone had lost a
key, the person who found it left it next to the visitor's sign in book. Not
being a visitor, I didn't even think of looking there!

But I have the key back now, and Cary is still being the mad monkey-butt
that he usually is, so alls well that ends well, at least for me. Wish I
could say the same for Jazz and Paddy :-(
