MLB I did a search of the posts over there, nothing turned up more recently than Sept. I used "Sherry" as the criteria, but I just went back and searched using her email address, and a few newer posts did turn up.

I know she has had some difficult health issues herself which she was overcoming as well as nursing a terminally ill husband who died around this time. It's hard to know what to do, isn't it? She may have chosen to hide away for a while, as people who are in grief often do, and need to. On the other hand..maybe not. If anyone knows her private mail address, a little hello how are you might be well received.
I never know myself whether or how to invade another's privacy in cases such as this. I had an idea since I read Pat's post, what do you all think about it? A lot of you have families, and live with someone else. If you are in any kind of trouble, they can get help for you, but they may not all know about your rpca life ;-) and maybe ought to be instructed how to contact someone to alert us to what is happening. There are others who live alone, many of us actually. Some have no close family. RPCA *is* our family. When Pat got that thump on the head from a bathtub, for example. Who was to know whether she was alive or not?
Okay, so this is my idea. See what you think of it. It would be an opt in/opt out thing for members who live alone going something like this: For very regular posters who live alone: If you do not hear from me in two days, e-mail me and if no response ring my relative.. phone no...etc. e-mail..etc. Irregular posters may have to make their own arrangements.
Most members who live alone will not need this, but a fair number of us might if we think no-one might miss us for a few days. Shall we think about this among ourselves? Set up some sort of alert system with relatives phone numbers after a certain time? It wouldn't matter if it was a false alarm, after all. It would only matter if not :-(
It would need a lot of talking about, and tweaking, but myself, I think it's a good idea.

MMJ has my emergency info and I have hers. If I go missing for a couple of weeks without any prior indication I'm going on a trip, etc. she knows to try to call me, call my brother, call my apartment office in case I'm in the apartment but can't get to a phone, etc. It's a good idea for us singles to have some sort of support system in case of emergency.
This is an extreme case, but years ago I fell ill and went to a neighborhood minor med clinic. They prescribed a drug which contained something I had no idea I was allergic to (sulfa). I got home, took my medication and then went to take a nap. What I actually took was a trip to Hell. It started with an unpleasant ache all over. Then my muscles literally froze up. I couldn't move to get to the phone to call for help. The phone started ringing and I could hear a friend yakking at my answering machine: "Jill, I know you're home, pick up the phone". I honestly couldn't move and I was crying at the phone, "Dammit, Trish, just come over! Break the door down! DO something!" And the whole time I was thinking to myself, the heart is a muscle. God, if my other muscles are paralyzed from this damn drug, is my heart going to stop?! Thankfully not. But it was 2 hours before I was able to actually move again and then very slowly. I was in terror the entire time.

Anything with sulfa in it (I think this harks back to very early days of medicine) will give me this paralytic reaction... it was a simple antibotic for a sinus infection but man did it do a number on me! I don't think I've ever been that afraid of being alone in my own home before or since.
Unfortunately for me, my neighbors seem to come and go in periods of about 6 months (I've lived here since 1998). I never get to know them beyond a wave and a "hi" in the parking lot. Yeah "they paved paradise and they put up a parking lot". Darn, I gave myself an earworm!

I now return you to our previously recorded broadcast...
Anyone who wants to, do what MMJ and I did. Hook up with someone in your hemisphere. If your security pal doesn't see some sort of notice here or get an email from you saying you'll be away for a bit, then you start getting concerned. MMJ and I decided on 2 weeks since that's about the longest I'm ever gone. And Persia can't wait that long to email her sleek black boyfriend, he of the purple puffball, Weeble, either :)
Then you set up the "who do you call first" system. In our case it starts with email. Then calling my regular phone, then my cell phone, then my brother, then the apartment manager if all else fails.

Oh, that's right. I didn't want my brother to be bothered because we don't talk that much although I do tell him *and* my mom when I'm going out of town. Of course Persia tells Weebs and I tell some other usenet folks, too. I'll have to ask Persia to let me write a side-note when she writes to Weebs so I can give you the number to da smelly place and for my brother.

My doctor told me it was an 'old fashioned' antibiotic. I was down to the last pill when I started itching. It quickly developed into a rash all over. I was red like a tomato from head to toe. It was Christmas time and I couldn't show my face. Missed all the Christmas goodies people brought to work
> Unfortunately for me, my neighbors seem to come and go in periods of about > 6 [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > Jill Yes there can be a lot of turnover in neighbours. I have neighbours who also live alone so we keep an eye on each other. The key exchange was so we can water each others plants when one of us is out of town. One time she called when she noticed the flyers piling outside my door while I was sick. She used to catsat Rusty when I was away. But not anymore with Rusty's repeated blockages. So like you now I have to board Rusty at TED's whenever I leave town.
You gave me an earworm when you quoted twice recntly the words from "Leaving on a Jet Plane'. That happened to be one of my favourtie songs. I caught myself singing it all afternoon after your last post on it.

It started > with an unpleasant ache all over. Then my muscles literally froze up. Very scary, Jill. Glad you made it. I normally enjoy living alone very much. Certainly much better than living with the men I've shared my life with in the past. But every once in a while something happens that makes you think it might be good to have another person there, after all. Like one time, I woke in the middle of the night, I was freezing though it was a hot summer night. My teeth were chattering and I felt I couldn't move. When I tried lifting my head from the pillow, the room started spinning. So I just lay there shaking for an hour or two until I fell asleep again. I was fine in the morning. I still don't have any idea what happened, except I suppose I must have had a high fever.
Another time, a year ago or so, I awoke in the middle of the night with very very low blood glucose. Now, I never pass out from low BG. It can get so low that my meter doesn't even register it, it just shows LO, and I'll still be perfectly coherent. So I wake up, feel the weakness in my limbs, drag myself to the kitchen and eat anything and everything in sight, but nothing seems to help. I have nothing left with carbs in it that could raise my BG, so I drag myself back to bed. I lay there for hours, staring at the clock and my BG is still low. That night I was absolutely certain that I was dying. I worried about who would feed the cats, and how long would it take for someone to find me. I was prety confindent that my mother would try to ring me inside a few days, because we talk on the phone pretty often, but then I didn't want my mother to find me. LOL! The things you think about.
Anyway, I was fine in the morning, and by then everything that I'd eaten during the night had finally kicked in and my BG was way too high. :oP

It's one of the big things with my relationship with John... I actually like that he doesn't live with me. Sorry if that sounds strange, but I've been divorced for 25 years, had a couple of roommates but never invited a guy to live with me. I don't "work and play well with others" LOL John keeps saying he needs his own time and space to go off and paint, whatever. Guess what? I don't want you around constantly, either dear. I like to kick back and read a book; don't bother me for a while :) Does this mean we're perfect for each other? <G>

I still don't have any idea > what happened, except I suppose I must have had a high fever. Oh, gawd... I was making peanut brittle one evening to take to work... it must have been around Christmas/Yule ("a long, long time ago, I can still remember when the music used to make me smile..." - there's the earworm de jour) when I got very light headed. I managed to get the brittle off the hot burner and turn the burner off. I walked back towards my bedroom but didn't quite make it. I passed out on the floor in the hallway.
I didn't have a cat then, but I had my little mutt dog Sampson (RB 1999). I don't know how long I was passed out on the floor but Sammy woke me up whining and licking my face, trying to bring me around. I managed to get myself into bed and I was fine the next morning. I've *no* idea what made me so suddenly ill. I was only about 22 years old then. I'd eaten, so it wasn't blood sugar dropping. Maybe it was the heat from the stove combined with having to stir the heck out of the candy to the hard crack stage, hot enough and vigorously enough to cook the raw peanuts and make the brittle "brittle" enough once spread out on a baking sheet to cool and be cracked into tasty pieces of heaven :) (Did I mention I like peanut brittle?) Obviously, this batch of peanut brittle didn't make it. Darn.

How nice to be missed. The truth is, and most probably missed it altogether, but I got my nose out of joint a while back and that's a condition best healed by absence :-) But on to more important things...YES I DO HAVE A BABY. I mean BABY, an orphan that still nurses on a bottle. She is so cute. Here is a pic. Frank just adores her. He's being a very good mommy.

Someone brought her into the shelter, said he found her but his wife was allergic. I don't think she was hardly 3 weeks old. I just offered to take her for a few weeks until she is a little older and eating well. It's just the most fun thing, all of the baby-kitten fun, but none of the long-term responsibility.

How on earth, after all the care you're giving her, will you be able to take her back to the shelter???

My next door neighbors have my key, but I hardly ever see them unless I'm going somewhere. In that case, their son feeds my cats, which is why they have the key. If there's somebody in Ventura County or the San Fernando Valley (California) who would like to exchange information with me, or just be my monitor, I'd appreciate it. Just email me - my address isn't munged. I haven't had the horrendous experiences some of you have had, but I will be 70 in November, and I do think about these things.

I think we even talked about it a while back but never really worked out a plan. Maybe we could have a "call list' of people who would like to be checked on if they "disappear" off the group for a time.

In fact, I was instrumental (years ago) in setting up a "telephone reassurance" program through our church. It became a seed program that was eventually joined by an alliance of churches in this area. Volunteers would call everyone on our list once a day at a predetermined time to make sure they were alright, and we also visited them once or twice a week. The big difference is that this program was for shut-ins who had no close family, and most of them were on very limited incomes.
Building on your idea and incorporating a little of what we did in that program, I would suggst that people who live alone could set up a similar network. This network could very well be based on readership of a newsgroup such as this one. However, I suggest that*each* party would agree to e-mail the other once a day -- it would be enough to use a very short message that basically says, "I am alright." I have had two events in my own family that shows how important it is to have daily contact (both of which happened a good many years ago). My grandmother fell down her basement steps and broke her hip. Fortunately, one of her sons stopped by later that day and found her. My great-aunt fell and also broke her hip. She lay there for two days before anyone found her. In each case, they were elderly and were completely unable to get to a telephone for help. Of course, we have all seen the ads for home programs where you would only need to press a button on a device that you could wear, but I think only a very small percentage of people actually wear those devices. The e-mail alternative could work very well, I think!

Jane - 22 Jun 2005 16:23 GMT It's a very good idea, actually. I have a group of friends in this area and we have something like this set up. We call each other once in awhile just to 'check in' if nothing else. Especially me, the diabetic who lives alone. As careful as I am, you never know when the blood sugar's going to drop and nobody's here to know that I won't wake up. I also have the keys to one friend's apartment and her directions about what to do if anything should happen to her. We've all discussed things like 'who will take our kitties if something happens?', and we'll all take care of each other. Friends are GOOD.
