He began coughing last week - very similar to the asthmatic cough that
Sam experienced. He also has had a runny eye for about a week so I took
him in to see TED. His upper canines (felines?) are infected which she
said might be causing his runny eye and possibly the coughing/infection.
His temp was normal but he did have a red throat.  She gave him a low
dose of steroids and I've had him on Clavomax for the past week. Today
he'll get his 6 month dental and get those two infected teeth cleaned
really well.  That's assuming he passes his blood work tests and the
x-rays I've asked for.  Hobbes is terribly overweight and I always worry
about him when he has to have any procedure done. I'd appreciate any
purrs that might be available - especially purrs that he doesn't have to
loose those two teeth. I hate it when they loose their "fangs".

Thank you all so much,
Julie and Hobbes

Thank you Adrian, and of course the four of mine left at home continue
to send purrs to everyone else in need.

Aw, poor Hobbes. Frank sends his best BTDT purrs. His constant sniffles
are probably due to his constant teeth problems. His own vet recommended
he have his fangs out, but the vet at the vet school said it was too
risky a procedure for such an elderly cat, so he got to keep his fangs
thanks to his venerable age (Frank told me to write 'venerable'). I
sincerely hope it's just an URI and he doesn't develop asthma, though
you seem to have been very successful in treating Sam. Miranda is
purring for Hobbes, too, and I'm sending my best healing vibes.

Thank you Marina and and Irulan and everyone else who has sent purrs.  I
just got a call and Hobbes has come through his dental without any
trouble.  He did not have to lose his fangs (fang you furry much, says
Hobbes).  The receptionist called me to let me know he had completed his
dental but said that TED will discuss with me his x-rays when I pick him
up this afternoon and bloodwork will be back tomorrow. Of course now I'm
going to worry about what that means! Marina, I'm not sure Hobbes would
be as easy as Sam is in regards to dealing with daily inhaled meds. But
at 28 lbs he can't have injected steroids so if that's the case he'll
have to have IM. I'm going to not borrow trouble until trouble finds me
and hope that he simply has a cold.

Again, thank you all for your purrs.

PUrrs for a smooth tooth cleaning and for that cough to go away. If Hobbes
ends up with Asthma too, I really think someone should to some level reading
in your area.

Lots of purrs that Hobbes won't lose his canines.
If he is really obese, a little weight loss program could only help his
lungs.  I know it's hard to do.
Kitty does not beg for food, if she isn't satisfied with what I give her,
she just goes out and catches herself a collared dove and eats it, in which
case I don't give her anything else for 24 hours. She only weighs about 4lbs
after all.
Boyfriend will beg for dry food, even though he has had plenty of wet.  He
loves it so much I can't refuse to give him just a little bit, so I know
about cats that insist they are so hungry they will faint at any moment if
they don't get  (what they've set their heart on)
I am lucky that both my cats are slim.  I would hate to have to say no to
their pleading if they weren't.

Thanks, Tweed. He made it through without having to lose his 'fangs'. We
appreciate the purrs.

The vet and I are going to have a discussion tonight regarding Hobbes.
The problem is that I have five cats and all are indoor only. I
mentioned walking Hobbes on a leash recently and she agreed but told me
to go slowly with him as she is concerned about his heart.  I'm in the
process of switching everyone to weight management dry food which won't
hurt anyone except for Lacey who barely weighs 7 lbs but she's old
enough that she won't be missing any real nutrients.  Then we'll think
about not free feeding. Lacey is the problem there again because she
only eat a little at a time throughout the day. If I take up the food
then she might not get enough.  They all get a small amount of wet food
in the morning and the evening but less than 4 oz and when the girls and
Hobbes don't finish theirs then Sam and Barnabus clean their plates.

Life can be difficult sometimes in a multi-multi-cat household. I'll
update everyone tonight after talking with TED. Gotta leave right now
and pick up my boy before TED closes her office.

Most ordinary "moggie cat" owners in UK are able to let their cats out, so
they get plenty of exercise.  Obese cats are fairly uncommon here.  Not
unknown though.

Presumably because he is very heavy now.  Good luck with trying to exercise
him a bit.

I had a multi-dog household (9), almost everyone had different dietary
needs, it can be done.  Just ask.
