However, I was thrilled to find out that I do have some Irish blood in my veins - my father's maternal grandmother.

He and his brothers took citizenship as soon as they could. His accent is a kind of hybrid -- people in OZ tended to think he sounded like a Pom, English people would immediately peg him as Australian. Interesting-- his two younger brothers have much more of a typical Aussie speech pattern, although Stephen could immediately produce the diphthongs on demand. ;)
Also, although his mother is English, she grew up partly in Malaya, and partly in Adelaide. So they already had a Pacific connection.
Although he seems very English in ways, he never feels comfortable there. According to him, everything is "too little." ;)

Years ago didn't the > Brits consider Australia to be a prison camp of sorts? Australia is as much a melting pot as the USA. Both countries were orignally colonised by the English, and hte native peoples very badly treated in the process.
Australia was orignally a penal colony for the British, and therefore many of the early Buropeans here were Irish (because the Irish tended to get arrested alot in Britain at the time), and Australia did have a "white Australia Policy" up to the 1950's. But since WW2, there has been a deluge of immigrants from all around the world, the first "wave" being Mediteranean (in the 50's and 60's), South East Asian in the 70's and 80's and more recently, people from the Middle East.
I live in a City that is ethincally diverse, thanks to the Steelworks sponsoring immigrant workers to come to Australia. Its also a university town, so we get alot of overseas students. But the further from the big cities you go, the less multicultural it seems to get. Now days people are proud to have a convict ancestor.
But yes, the majority of Australians have ancestors from the UK and/or Ireland.

They are hotter than a fire cracker in the summer and colder than snot in the winter. However, they do have some opportunities for those who like temperature extremes. I was raised near Coulee Dam, Washington, and still miss the dry dustiness in the summer with the smell of rain on the rare occasions we got it. Here the average rain fall is over 30 inches/year. Back in Eastern Washington, it was 7-13 inches/year.

I remember that smell/scent... and at certain times, right after a rainfall, it reminds me of Vegas. Weird how a smell/scent/odor can produce vivid memories.
The Tri-Shities was a horrible time for me and my family. We were so hell bent to get to FL (after Vegas)... and then, eight years later, we had to move to "the toilet bowl of the world"... Mom's words, not mine. All I remember is Mt. St. Helens as a "wow" memory, getting my first tattoo (and my first... well, I'll leave it at that), AND sand storms that were always hell on my contacts.

Jane - 22 Jun 2005 15:57 GMT I grew up in NY State, which I don't call 'upstate' since my hometown is on the southern border of the state. Owego, NY. Not Oswego, which is big and has its own state university, but Owego, population 4,000, near Binghamton. Anyway, I moved SOUTH, to the Washington DC area about 11 years ago. Mostly because of a guy (who dumped me later), but partly because this is the Silicon Valley of the East, and I'm a 'puter geek. I went home to finish college then came back here. I love the South. I've never been married.
(Hey Laurie, I spent 3 years in Syracue, too! Known for 9 months of winter and 3 months of poor skiing)

I've been here 10 years now. (Seems so hard to believe to me!) And I *still* am not used to the winters. I absolutely freeze. Luckily, my folks live in Pittsburgh, so I knew how to drive in the white stuff. After living in Jacksonville, Florida for 25 years, I tend to lean towards heading south one day again...
And when I first moved here, I called it 'upper state'. It's a southern thing!!! ;o)
