Scouty and Silver are very shy. When anyone comes to the apartment,
they run and hide. A guy from church came around this afternoon to
talk to John about his computer, and both cats darted under the bed to
hide. Alas, John's computer is in the bedroom, so that's where John
and Bill were, and Bill's allergic to cats so I had to get her out. I
called the girls out to the livingroom with kitty treats and told them
what good girls they were. Silver hid under the coffee table and Scout
ran behind the chair. But obviously she didn't feel safe enough
there... five seconds later she bolted into the kitchen and pawed at
the kitchen cupboard until it opened. I've got a kitty latch on the
door to keep them out of there so it would only open an inch, but she
was determined to get in, so I opened the door for her. In she bolted
and she didn't come out again, even after Bill left.
In the end I tried to lure her out with more treats but she wasn't
coming, and I got down with a torch and tried to see if I could get
her out myself. No Scout! The Cupboard was empty and she wasn't
anywhere else in the apartment. Where could she have gone?! We were
very afraid that she'd found a way into the wallspace and she'd be
lost forever... I pulled the stove away from the wall and found that
there's a dead space behind the cupboard in the corner. She had just
enough room to squeeze herself past the edge of the cupboard and into
that space, and she was cowering in the corner. I think she was stuck,
but maybe she was just scared witless. Poor little baby... I'm just
glad that we didn't really lose her!

Scary!
One great thing about our house is its basement, which is only half
completed. The other half is a retaining wall holding in a bunch of
dirt. Yeah, not so great for us (I really wish the original owners
had paid the bucks to get a full-sized unfinished basement), but it's
great for Oscar. She can hide back there and even jump up into the
basement rafters, from which she can watch any basement activity. I'm
glad she has a relatively safe place to hide.

Phew! When I saw this topic I was worried. I'm glad Scout is ok. Purrs that
he gets less afraid.

Yikes, that was a scary subject line! However, I'm glad to know Scout didn't
disappear forever into the walls of your apartment building. They certainly
have a talent for wedging themselves into tight little corners. My cats also
seem to love my kitchen cupboards. Nina disappears into the cupboard where
I keep my mixing bowls and baking pans whenever she has the chance. It's
like a safari for her.
Perhaps.... you should invite a friend over for coffee some day/evening
and get Scout used to the idea there are other people in the world, and if
they're your friends, they wouldn't harm little pussycats. =o)
