Yikes!  We don't get a lot of rain here and we're having what they call a
hundred year flood right now.  Our basement has flooded, though not terrible
badly, 2000 people have been evacuated here and thousands more throughout
the province.  I'm sending my thoughts out to all those worse off than we
are and am hoping for that water table to subside quickly.  Rain ends
tonight for three days and then it starts again.  We're just about at more
rain this month than we usually get in a year.

I can't imagine this - the dam that creates our water reservoir has breached
for the second time in history tonight - the only two times in history have
happened this month.  Very scary.  This is all the water that lies behind
it - lots of fast water flooding in at the beginning of the reservoir:

Yikes - the snowpack from the mountains hasn't melted yet either and the
rivers don't usually peak until July or August.

Just read the stats on the river flow and pasted here:

"It's flowing higher than it ever has in the recorded history of the Bow
River," said CFCN News' Kevin Green from the river's bank in Calgary.

The normal flow is 100 cubic metres per second. "Right now, it's flowing at
2,000 cubic metres per second," he said, noting one could see park benches
zipping downstream from washed-out parks.

CFCN reporter Kevin Rich said water is flowing over top of the Glenmore dam
on the Elbow River. "That means it's risen three metres in the last 24
hours."

Egads, Susan.  Purrs that the flooding subsides soon.

Yikes!  That's just crazy!  Dennis' mom had mentioned something about
it in an email a few days ago, but we didn't clue in that it was so
bad.  Purrs for your basement, Susan.
Dennis wonders when will his mom and sister get out of that crazy
place.  They've lived there long enough.  (This is the comment that we
get from them whenever something happens here...ie. tsunami)

I know what it's like living in fear of flooding - as I have a stream at the
end of the garden...

My thoughts are with you.

Purrs to you, and all the Calgarians, both humans and cats, during this
difficult period. It seems severe weather is affecting many parts of
Canada. Flooding in Albert and the east coast, and the heat waves and
smog in Ontario.

Purrs that you & yours stay safe.

Us Aussies could only *wish* for that amount of water at the moment - the
Eastern side of Australia is in its third or fourth year of drought, our
water supplies are way below the half way mark, and we're on very tight
water restrictions. The situation for farmers is dire. Still, floods are
just as damaging as droughts, so wishing y'all return to your normal weather
patterns quickly!

I saw a report about your drought on the BBC, some farms were more like
deserts and third and fourth generation farmers were having to give up
because of the lack of water. A very sad situation for all concerned. I
imagine the knock on effects could affect most of the population with
higher prices for agriculteral products.
