This afternoon, Dennis and I went 1 town over to have a seafood lunch
at the beach.  Unfortunately the car died on the highway halfway
there.  Some total electrical failure.  We fiddled with the fuses for
a little while but nothing was happening, so Dennis walked to a nearby
Chevy dealership.  They didn't have any mechanics but called the
Nissan dealership for us who sent out a couple of guys.
These guys fiddled with the car for about an hour and couldn't seem to
figure it out.  Dennis and I were getting absolutely starving because
it was already after 4pm by this time and we hadn't eaten since
breakfast.  The area where the car died was on a big highway with
nothing but industrial companies, so there was no food around.
We were sitting on the side of the road when suddenly I saw a
motorbike with food stand attached coming our way.  I jumped up and
flagged him down.  It was a dim sum stand, we were so excited!  Bought
a ton of dim sum for $1 and scarfed it all down.
10 minutes later we were sitting on the side of the road again and
talking about how we need the ice cream truck to come along now.  All
of a sudden, we saw these 2 girls in business suits coming our way.
They were pulling ice chests on wheels.  Turns out they were sales
ladies for this frozen cake company, so we bought a mango and a
chocolate frozen cake.  Chowed down on that and split the rest with
the mechanics.
Suddenly a gorgeous 1957 Mercedes came along and died right next to
our car.  This guy got out and our mechanic guys gave him a boost.  He
told us that he had been a monk for 2 years but finished his monkhood
yesterday and was headed home.  The mechanics went and got a town bar
and hooked it up to their truck so they could tow us back to the
Nissan dealership in town.
We think the car's going to be out of commission for a while, we're
supposed to call them on Monday.  I hope it won't cost too much.
We ended up getting home by Songtaew and Tuk-Tuk while drinking some
Heineken tall boys from 7/11.  Ack, what a day, but thanks to the
timely arrival of food and drink, it could have been much worse ;-)

I would never have such good luck!  Mobile food, no less :)  Why is it hard
for me to picture a 7/11 and a Chevy dealership in Thailand?

Yeah, they love their mobile food.  They rig up these rickety
contraptions that they strap to the sides of motorbikes.  There will
be a brazier with hot charcoals and everything.  Had to laugh when it
was dim sum though.  I loooooove dim sum!  I was expecting the usual
fish balls in noodle soup, which I don't love but would have eaten, I
was so hungry.
There were no 7/11's when you were here?  Wow, they are everywhere
now.  I think Thailand has the higest number of 7/11's per capita of
any country in the world.  There's one on every street corner.
Chevy dealerships are very new.  They are just starting up in the last
year or two.  It's still mostly Japanese cars and some Ford.

I never saw a 7/11 in Bangkok.  Dad drove a Nissan when we lived there.
Mobile food, absolutely.  And I'm with you on the dim sum!  Oh yeah!  I miss
being able to sit by the curb and have someone drive by with food, or if
nothing else, snacks.  I miss dried squid!  I miss watermelon seeds.  I miss
the good old fashioned spicy chicken soup (Keteou Nam - sp!)

Good lord. I was waiting for a punch line. I was certain it was a joke! I
can't believe food came to you. Now, THAT is good luck.

Well, food does tend to travel in Thailand, just not usually down
major highways.  It's usually more in the small neighbourhood roads.
Despite our car problems, we were feeling quite lucky though and ended
up laughing as we were eating our food :-)
