Major Quake Strikes Off Coast Of Northern California

POSTED: 8:24 pm PDT June 14, 2005
UPDATED: 8:43 pm PDT June 14, 2005

EUREKA, Calif. -- A major earthquake struck Tuesday night about 80 miles
off the coast of northern California.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at about 7:50 p.m. southwest of the
coastal community of Crescent City, Calif., according to the U.S.
Geological Survey Web site.

A regional tsunami warning for the U.S. West Coast was issued Tuesday
after the earthquake struck.

The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued the regional tsunami warning
after the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 struck off the
coastal community of Crescent City, Calif., according to the Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center.

"There is a possibility that there could be a tsunami on the West Coast
of the United States," said Stuart Weinstein, a geologist at the Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center.

The center said that based on all data there was no tsunami threat to
Hawaii.

rrb: all people on the beach are being directed to get OFF the beach.
People in low lying coastal areas are directed to pay attention for
evacuation warnings.

I'm remembering one time when I was in my senior year of high school.
I lived in Florence, Oregon, at the time (right on the coast), and
there was a tsunami warning. People reportedly headed TO the beach to
*watch* said tsunami (sheesh, that word is hard to type!).

Good thing it turned out to be about 1/4". :-)

I'd say, "only in California", but CA behavior is obviously contagious to
surrounding States!

A couple years back, when the big forest fires were raging through
southern CA, we had to deal with that. The fires had just destroyed my
former MIL's house and were within 3 blocks of my mom's house. My
brother and my son and Nancy and I all went to my mom's house with our
pickup trucks to load up whatever we could, along with her dog (of
course). On the way out of the neighborhood we had to put up with
sight-seers driving IN TO the area to watch! Fortunately the local
police were on hand and were ticketing and occasionally arresting people
for obstructing traffic.

And very fortunately the fires stopped at the 3 block line and didn't do
any damage to mom's place.

It is a good thing we have such great people here, and examples like
Yowie's.  Otherwise I'd despair of the human race sometimes.

I feel mildly compelled to  defend my native state by replying that wherever
you find disasters, you can find idiots to stand around in the way, watching
and taking pictures of the spectacle.  The phenomenon is not native to
California, alone.  The snippet below is from the news story Susan M. posted
tonight about the flooding in Calgary:

The gawkers were out in full force along the Sheep River in downtown
Okotoks, drawn to the wading pool scene surrounding the shops and businesses
on Elizabeth Street. While some worked at sandbagging, scores of people
stood along the dangerous banks of the river, taking photos and videos of
the spectacle; many brought their children, with some holding their kids
along the bridge, a la Michael Jackson's baby balcony stunt, just to get a
better view.

Second Generation Native Californian, who knows  when to either help, or get
out of the way.

stupidity ;-)
