I found out that my aunt has a friend who has drastically reduced her
fibro symptoms by practicing yoga.  I don't know much beyond that, but
I thought you might find it interesting.  If you're interested, I may
be able to find out more.

(I'm pretty sure this is right; it's possible there's some other
condition that has an extremely similar name, I suppose.)

I think she already does yoga.  I remember reading one of her "Sammy"
stories about doing yoga with Sammy... :)

Oh.  Right.  Good point.  Sorry, I've been a bit discombobulated with
everything going on lately.  Family visiting, road trip to Utah, job
interviews and offer ...

Well, maybe she does yoga for other reasons.  This is confirmation
that it's a good thing =)

Thank you for thinking of me Monique, that was very sweet!  Sorry I haven't
been around much lately - I'm *WAY* behind on sending purrs, condolences,
and congratulations where necessary (BTW, congrats on the new job!!).

I did start doing yoga (for the degenerative disk disease), but haven't done
so in a while because I've been doing an hour of other exercise every day
and because I've been so busy.  But you're right, it is good for fibro
also - the stretching of the muscles help flush the fatigue poisons that
cause pain.  I really need to start doing it agin, but my life has been a
bit hectic lately and I haven't even been able to do one of my favorite
things in the whole world - reading this group!!!

I have new proof that yoga does great things.  I wouldn't have
believed this was possible:

A week of yoga improved my martial arts.

I practiced yoga with my aunt every morning while in Utah.  This was
just a few minutes of stretches, a few poses, no big deal except that
I sweat a lot more than I would have expected.  When I got back home
and attended a martial arts class ... wow!  My moves are more fluid;
my body is simply moving better.  It's amazing.  I'm now a believer.

I tried a yoga DVD from netflix, but I didn't care for it much.  The
teacher had an annoying (to me) voice, and this "beginner" instruction
included stuff like stretching so that your feet are standing atop
your hands!  Right.

Anyway, I've now ordered the DVD version of what I believe to be the
video my aunt has.  She has attended workshops with this guy, and I
really liked the video itself:

I like how he manages to explain the movements well without spending
lots of time talking, and I like that he always offers suggestions on
how to modify the stretches and positions for those who can't quite do
it (as they say in the blurb, "compassionate in his offering of
alternatives to many of the asanas").

Yeah, the right teacher is a *must*.  The DVD I have goes from beginner
(where you can use blocks if you can't reach all the way to the floor) to
advanced (which I still can't do and don't think I ever will).  It's
important to get the poses *right* rather than trying to stretch as far as
the teacher does, so go ahead and use the blocks at first until your muscles
stretch naturally (they sell "kits" in athletic stores that come with mat,
blocks, rope for holding your feet in lying down poses if you can't reach
your feet, etc.).

The few "live" classes I took had all the accoutrements mentioned above for
beginners, and the teacher also stressed getting the position right over
stretching fully at first.
