Beatrice is soooooo persistent with efforts to suck my earlobe.... I failed
with CatNipped's method of teaching her to suck her own toe. I've tried
putting my hand over my ear, and she just goes to the other ear, back and
forth until one of us - usually me - gets tired. I've tried just about
everything I can think of to get her to stop, and yet she carries on. So I
guess the only choice left open is to tolerate it - unless one of you
brilliant folk can suggest something I have not tried.... Oh, I hope!!!

What's that?

It's a harmless substance that tastes very nasty.  Here in UK it comes in
sprays and dropper form.  It's often used on wounds to stop a dog/cat from
interfering with their stitches, but has lots of other uses.  Spraying on
table legs for example to stop puppies teething on them!  My vet usually
gives me some post-op, but you may be able to buy it somewhere from the pet
shops you have which seem to carry much more stuff than they do over here.
It would be completely safe on your skin I would think if it's deemed safe
enough to be applied to fresh surgical wounds.

Have you tried a baby's pacifier?
Dan M - 08 Jun 2005 07:07 GMT
> Have you tried a baby's pacifier?

When Ranger first started doing this, I thought maybe she had been taken
away from her momcat too early (well, I *know* she was). I bought a
kitten bottle and put some kitten milk in it, and when Ranger went to
sucking on my earlobe I gave her the bottle instead. She loved it, but
it took less than one bottle of milk for Ranger to chew the nipple right
off the bottle. I suspect a baby pacifier might suffer the same fate.

Fortunately she holds back the teeth when she does the earlobe thing.
The claws do come in to play, which is why she got her front claws
clipped last week :)

Yes, but only my earlobe will do for her. She won't even consider anything
else.

Bitter apple on your earlobes?

If anyone offers you any suggestions, please pass them on! Ranger kitten
loves to suck on either earlobes or eyelids. I let her suck on my eyelid
once, but I ended up with a kitty hickie on my eyelid! Now I tend to let
her go at my earlobe for a little while, then I pull a sheet up over my
head.

Easy answer.  Wear those big clip on earrings you bought years ago when big
clip on earrings were in style!!  You'll solve Beatrice from suckling, and
you'll look mahvahlous!!!!!!   ;o)

I once knew a cat who would very carefully remove people's earrings
with her teeth.

Of course, if nothing works, you could get another bitty to suck on
the other one, and tell people they are earrings. ;)

And now you've given me the mental picture of Dan M., who has the same
problem of an earlobe-suckling kitty, wearing big clip-on earrings... :D

I haven't really been following this thread, but has anyone
suggested anointing your earlobes with Bitter Apple?  It's
harmless, but tastes bad, so it just might do the trick.  (I
don't think it stings when applied to skin, and it has no
odor.)   Of course, cats being cats, Beatrice might just
decide it's her favorite flavor.

My mother once tried Tabasco sauce to cure a puppy of chewing on
furniture. The little stinker developed a taste for the stuff. :-)

Several people have suggested Bitter Apple.  Unfortunately, Pat has no idea
where to get the stuff.  I can't say I've ever seen it, myself.  Do you have
a suggestion about that?

Jill

I used bitter apple on my daughters nails to stop her from bitting
them. I was able to buy it from a private pet store. (I don't like the
idea of selling animals), but it was the only place I could find the
stuff.

Petco, PetSmart, almost any pets supply store, I should
think.  I just went in and asked for it, and they steered me
right to it!

Thanks. Next time I get to the big city (I only go 2-3x/year) I will get it,
if Beatrice hasn't quit sucking my earlobe by then.
