Mognusticat - 02 Jun 2005 19:25 GMT Hi,
I think you have to be pretty dedicated to keep up with everything. More likely to just dip in when the time allows. I generally post to the mogular diary and drop in here once or twice a day.

If I see an ongoing thread I'm interested in, I'll read a few posts to bring myself up to date on that situation, whatever it is. There are also certain names I look for, and I'll usually read those people's posts no matter where they are.
Welcome and good luck!

Well, Princess and Squeaker I think you all know about, I'm yet to tell Kimba and Kinky-Boo's story, and I still am owned by Rocky and Kinky (a.k.a Mr. Biggleworth). *Probably* going to go pick up another kitty on Sunday. Maybe. Possibly. Perhaps.
(I need to get this "sucker!" tattoo removed from my forehead one of these days ;)
Most usenet groups in which I've found a place to hang my hat for a while have no where near as much traffic as this one. Even so, I can keep up with 200-300 posts per day . . . but 700? Nuh-uh, no way. There's not enough time for that and for doing other important things (like eating, sleeping, feeding the cats, and cleaning out the litter tray, cleaning the ferret cages, feeding the goats . . . you get the picture).
This makes me feel mildly uncomfortable as I'm not used to not being able to track the ebb and flow of a group. You all need to post less! ;) I'll probably end up just skimming, and posting occasionally. The worst are the posts about someone having lost a pet, I never know what to say, I feel so deeply for their loss.
I'm impressed with this froup, as a usenet veteran (of sorts, anyhow). There's minimal backbiting, flaming, trolling etc going on. Compared to the rest of usenet this is a very healthy group, and an absolute pleasure to read. This community should feel extremely proud of that, it's not an easy thing to achieve.
Gotta go, a small fluffy munchkin wants to know when it's lap time.

These days it's > normally 700+, you really need to stay awake 24/7 ;-) That's really weird that you guys are getting 700+ per day. I've been reading for years and read every single post (I don't work) and even catch up after being away on a trip. But I never get that many. I tend to get around 300 per day, sometimes even less. I'm on individual.net and from following threads, it doesn't seem that I'm missing any. I also never get any threads that are missing the original post. I really don't think Individual is dropping any posts, but why am I not getting 700+ per day??? -- Britta "There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast." -- Unknown Check out pictures of Vino at: http://photos.yahoo.com/badwilson click on the Vino album

You're right, it is a lot more than a few years ago. I remember when I first started reading the group, can't remember if it was 1999 or 2000, but some mornings there would only be about 18 posts. -- Britta "There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast." -- Unknown Check out pictures of Vino at: http://photos.yahoo.com/badwilson click on the Vino album

Google groups lists an average of 250-300 per day, so you guys are correct. It just *seems* like 700+ to me ;)

AFAICT, conversations are staying coherent, so I don't *think* my upstream is dropping posts.

Feeding your cats comes *after* eating and sleeping???? You're lucky! :)

Cathy - who is also a "lurker/skimmer" and busy trying to talk one of the cats into getting off the printer....
Shiral - 03 Jun 2005 01:37 GMT Keep up???? We're supposed to keep up??! =o)
I say, just enjoy, read whatever you can and let the rest go pass. We're a friendly group that "plays nice." Join in the same spirit and you'll find some great new friends. Share funny, touching items concerning your cats, ask for supportive purrs when you need them, and share your support for others on the group in need and have fun.
I've decided that keeping up with EVERY thread is impossible, but I enjoy the group, nonetheless. =o) Make it fun and manageable for YOU, and don't worry about the rest.
Welcome! Melissa

When I get behind, like I am right now, I tend to read the first post in a thread, look for updates, and track conversation drift. It isn't unusual for our topics to drift in some strange directions:-)

Christina Websell - 07 Jun 2005 22:41 GMT > How does anyone keep up with this group? :) > > TK Unless you are home and awake 24/7, I don't think you can, realistically. After being in hospital I now have 2533 messages unread, and 2854 not downloaded, I'm not sure why my server does that. So there will be 2854 msgs that I will never see, and the chance of reading the 2533 while posts are added each day is minimal. I do have favourite posters here, and I always try to read their posts. I try to respond to purr and prayer requests from anyone if I can. Otherwise I only scan for posts that I think need a reply and can't even sometimes reply to replies to my own posts, even though I'd like to. You are all just so talkative! (and long may it continue in this wonderful group..)

What makes it so hard is the group is most fun when it goes completely off track, and it can be hard to find those threads. So whenever I skip something I'm sure I'm missing something.

Yep, it's something I think about everytime I'm tempted to delete messages because I'm WAY behind. After a couple posts the heading seldom has anything to do with the actual subject, and if forced to delete to catch up you often miss some of the best posts.
