Just a while ago Jake came in and jumped up on the counter to beg for
treats.  He meowed at me and I heard him!  Its been years.

I meowed back like I used to do, and in just a little bit it dawned on him
that I can hear him again.  We had quite a conversation and even some head
butts.

I told Charlie this afternoon.  He said Jake should be very happy.  That he
has been getting up on the counter and calling for me every morning all this
time.  We used to "talk" in the mornings years ago before my hearing got so
bad.

I only lurk around here sometimes, so forgive me if I ask a question or
two: did you have one of those cochlea implants? If so, was it difficult
to "learn" to hear all over again? I have heard that it is quite a
challenge. My Mom has only had one good ear since she was a child, and
now the "good" one is going too. It is very sad to watch how she battles
more and more to interact with other people. Can only certain people
have this operation? or can they help most people these days?

Sorry to be so nosy...
Thanks

I'm only just training with it now.  I've had two appointments with the
audiologist to adjust the hardware to me.  And it a new program so she is
just learning too.

About 1/2 of the implants are done for older adults who no longer have
functional hearing.  I am profoundly deaf in the ear we implanted.  And have
only slight residual hearing with the other ear with a hearing aid.

The operation is fairly simple.  I just kept reminding myself that this is
voluntary surgery and they perform it on infants all the time.  Working on
an adult should be a piece of cake.

I can now hear far more clearly that I did with the hearing aid.  But what I
hear sounds strange.  Voices are quite high pitched and fairly monotone.
Separating background noise from what you want to hear is still a problem.

I haven't told Charlie yet, but if I turn on the speaker phone on the
telephone, I think I can hear.  Might not get a phone number quite right or
the spelling on a name.  But I was getting nothing before.

Thanks for the info. I am very pleased to know that you are getting such
benefit from it. It must be wonderful to be able to hear again. Only
thing is, my Mom is quite old (almost 80), so I dunno if they would do
the the op for her though... I hope they can do something for her, cos
you of all people must know how difficult life can be without good
hearing.... I am very lucky, my hearing is still very good, but I do
wear glasses now though :(
Cheers

Well, Medicare pays for it and the surgery itself isn't bad.  But first you
would have to have an audiologist determine if she is deaf enough for
Medicare rules.

Then you would need to consider her general health and adaptability.  It
isn't easy to learn to use this thing.  If she would be able to adapt to it,
and should get a few years benefit, it would be great.

How long has she been using hearing aids?  Does she handle using them well?

Cathy lives in South Africa, I'd be interested to know what kind of
health system they have there, I imagine her mother would have to pay
for surgery.

Hi Adrian,
It depends on your income/employer. They have free government clinics
and hospitals for the lower income group who do not belong to a "Medical
Aid" scheme, but there are always queues and long waiting lists for
these patients. Not enough Doctors and Nurses, at these places, of course.

OTOH, if you belong to a "Medical Aid" scheme (which are rather
expensive), you can go to the "private" clinics and hospitals. However,
this is not cheap either. They have various options that you can take,
ranging from not-so-cheap to very-very-expensive, if you want "full"
medical/dental/optical etc. cover. If you work for a big organization,
one of the "perks" is that the company will pay for half of your monthly
medical aid contributions. Its a nice tax write off for the companies,
of course. I was on one of those schemes when I was working, but now
that I am home, we just have "hospital cover". This works out a bit
cheaper, and will cover any operation and medicine that is needed -
while in hospital. But if we go to our GP, need glasses, or dental care,
we have to pay cash up front.

The care is generally good though, they are quite up to date with all
the latest technology (if you can afford it).

They even have Medical Aid for pets! Is that common in your neck of the
woods? What part of the world are you from?
Cheers

I'm in the UK, hospital treatment is free, dental and optical has to be
paid for, unless you receive state benefits.

I heard that the health care was quite good in UK. We have quite a bit
of family over there, and now that my Mom is back there, she might be
able to get something done.

She tried a hearing aid for the "bad" ear, but it didn't help in her
particular case. Her bad ear has a constant "buzzing" in it, so a
hearing aid actually made things worse, cos it amplified the buzzing. I
think it put her off, because when we suggested it for the "good" ear,
she would not entertain the idea...... <sigh>. She has recently gone
back to UK, and I am not sure how the health care system works over
there... As for the good ear, I am not sure if she would be classified
as "deaf enough". She can hear lower pitched sounds, like the sound of a
car engine, but not higher pitched sounds, like speech. Its weird...

Your post has touched my soul. Time has been working on slow changes to my
vision but it's left my hearing alone in spite of concert attendance @
Jefferson Airplane (yeah, that old) concerts where we couldn't hear for 45
minutes after coming out of the venue. What a miracle these new surgeries
and procedures can bring to some of us.
