He had best get over it.

Jo Firey - 31 May 2005 01:47 GMT We just finished a major renovation of our main bathroom. New tub, tile floors, replaced vanity and sink, etc. And one of the biggest considerations was to create a place for the litterbox. We removed a 40" wide vanity and replaced it with one only 24" wide. Now the 15" wide litter box slides in next to it and is out from underfoot. It is only inches from where it has been for Jakes whole life.
(I'm wiped out, just finished cleaning up all the construction mess and cleaning the bathroom)
Jake is afraid of the tile floor! Sits in the hall and looks at his litter box but will not set foot on the tile. I even took him into the room for a while and closed the door to try to get him used to it. No way. Took off as soon as the door opened, and a few minutes later was back at the doorway looking longingly at his litter box.
I know the room smells funny. Glue and grout and adhesive and cleaners. But really, given the way he can stink the place up. Never bothered him then.

Years ago, we got a bathroom carpet of black plush. After trimming it to fit around the fixtures, we stood back and admired.
Clifford (RB) went to the edge of the bathroom door. His eyes became very, very wide. We realized that the carpet was almost identical to the color of his fur, except for the snow-white last inch of his tail.
You could hear the sound of his brain grinding, and he reached his decision. He LEAPED, all claws extended, for the back of this giant cat, impudently imitating him, that had invaded his house.
No reaction from the giant cat. Clifford shook his head, raised a paw, and whacked it. Still no reaction.
He emitted a *humph* of superiority and strode out.

How about some throw rugs to the litter box until he gets used to it?

Poor Jake, but you know how cats hate having their routines disrupted or their environment changed. Purrs that he gets used to the new floor soon, and congrats on the new bathroom. On a similar note, I just got a bag of those absorbent crystals and poured it into one of my two cat boxes. The other had the old litter. Miranda immediately got into the box with the new litter and started flinging the pearls out of the box. Grrr. So then I mixed the pearls with the old litter so there's a mixture in both boxes. We'll see how they take to them. Miranda has this really bad habit of flinging a lot of litter out of the box. She spends ages in the box every time, both before and after doing her business. Digging, digging, digging, flinging, flinging, flinging.

Felix is a very energetic digger too, which is why we get the crystal litter in the gravel-shaped format. The round balls roll WAY too well and we were finding litter clear across the apartment!

I've taken her out for walkies a couple of times, but she is terrified and usually cowers in my arms. Last sunday I set her down on the grass and she slithered around on her tummy a while. Then she suddenly realised, Hey! This is the yummy green stuff! and started eating away. Then she remembered she was in the scary Out again, and slithered under a bush. I lifted her up and we went inside again, but we are making progress. She was terrified of the balcony at first, but soon got used to it and now enjoys lounging about there and watching life go by, so I think she'll get used to the real Out soon, too.

They are a lot stronger and a lot closer to his nose, olfactorily speaking. I think a throw rug strategically placed between the door and his box is a very good idea while he's getting used to the new set up. Congratulations on the nice new bathroom. =o)
Marina, I'm very glad to know OTHER cats spend a long time in their boxes, too. Sometimes, I think Francesca thinks she's imprisoned in the Chateau d'If, and must dig her way to freedom from the litterbox, she's so passionate about getting the wastes properly covered. =o) And yes, my bathroom floor bears witness to this activity.

Irulan - 31 May 2005 16:39 GMT oh yes, Jazz flings too. Actually I'm glad he flings because if he pees and flings I know he's peed. When he got his UTI's he wouldn't dig around and fling, that's how I knew he wasn't peeing. Everytime he digs and flings I know he's peed ::whew::.
But I do have to vacuum around his litterbox everyday to clean up all the litter he's flung out <g>. Jazz & his mama

Harri is such an enthusiastic flinger that I had to put a covered litter box in the truck. Without a covered box, Harri would fling litter across to the driver's side of the truck and had flung som much towards the passenger side door that the passenger seat had a huge pile of litter under it.
At home wehave clay litter in Harri's truck box and pine litter in the others. Nobody does much flinging with the pine stuff.

Purrs that he gets used to the new floor soon, [quoted text clipped - 18 lines] > > Dan Our contractor of course thought we were out of our minds to replace a large vanity with a small one. But after thirty five years the large one had become grundgy and I didn't feel like refinishing it. Now the litter box has washable walls on three sides so kick out is greatly reduced. Jake and Molly go out so I don't know for sure Jake is using the box. But at least one of them is.
Today I have to seal grout. But first I have to make sure there will be someone home to help me get back up from the floor when I'm done.

Sandy - 31 May 2005 06:00 GMT This makes me wonder what I'll be in for if/when I ever get new carpet. The texture probably won't be very different, but there could be smells at first. Maybe I'll do one floor at a time, so Sundance and Rebecca will have a place to hang out until they get used to the new.
The things we do for them... :-)

I'm agreeing w/Karen that it might be because it's slippery. My brother's elderly dog is afraid to step on the bare wood floors b/c it's slippery. He has to walk on the rugs. If it was my dog, I'd put in throw rugs. But they aren't like us! :o( Try non-slip throw rugs. Of course, they'll get litter in them. like my BR throw rugs do. <sigh>
