Mr. Pumpkin, Aggie Marble, Victor Velcro can sense that I have changed from
stalwart and steady Kitty Mom to Nervous Nellie!  They are so wonderful and
loving, but I am still a nervous wreck.

I am going in on Tuesday (5/30) for parathyroid mini-surgery.  This should
be a cake walk.  Great doctor!  Wonderful hospital!  I'm in excellent
health.  Not a problem!  But I am still a nervous wreck.

I think of Tweed and Jo and others.  I'm not afraid, just nervous.

Well, on to a cat problem that we could use some help with if you please.

There appeared at our door(s) about six weeks ago a very interesting looking
adult, long hair, airplane-eared- healthy male cat, a mix of black (tail and
stripe down back) and soft beige fur (with loosely defined light black
stripes).

It was fighting time with Victor Velcro and Mr. Pumpkin added a swipe now
and then. My DH, David, would shoo the cat away with water.  He is so very
concerned that the new cat could hurt or cause illness to our cats.  Also
when Cat #4 would sneak through the Kitty Door and eat our cats food #4
would spray on his way out!

David's job takes him away for week's, sometimes months at a time.  I
started feeding #4 outside.  He was very receptive and after a few hisses he
gladly accepted his chow.  Now he wants to get into the house, which I think
will be alright as our three cats are no longer bothered by him. Thought
that might happen this morning, but, as #4 came through the Kitty Door Mr.
Pumpkin bapped him on the top of the head.  #4 left for the day.

What do you think?  If he sprays out he goes!  Otherwise?  Will David, who
loves his cats, especially Mr. Pumpkin, allow Mr. #4 to move in?   We'll
(I'll) do the posters.

He is an interesting looking cat.  I would guess that he has a home now but
he eats so much that one family couldn't feed him enough!  He is not fat or
even chubby, nor is he thin.

I think he should be contained away from your cats until (1) you determine
whether he has a home and is just wandering around mooching food (posters,
calls to area shelters, etc.) and (2) has been vetted against ilnesses he
might pass along to your others.

Thanks OJ.  It is good information.  Since I now feed him I can get closer
to him.  He hisses but doesn't move.  Stays put until I leave his bowl of
food.

I started feeding #4 in the morning.  He eats and leaves until the evening
when he now meows very loudly outside the door for dinner.  He no longer
tries to get into the house.

Hey Adrian,

Thanks for the purrs.  Needed them.  The surgery was a bit more involved
than orginally expected to be.  Nothing complicated just a surprise to me.
Thankfully Dr. James Norman, Tampa (FL) General Hospital is the greatest
doctor for this type of surgery there is.  Ah, the power of the Purr.

Purrs for your surgery, and for your nerves.  As you say, it should be a
cake walk, but it's natural to be nervous.

Purrs are so calming, they sure worked for me.  I live 70 miles from Tampa,
where I had to go and I was a cool as a cucumber the ride over there and for
the whole admittance process.  You guys are so wonderful.  Thanks Joy for
"your" purrs.

Charleen, purrs for your surgery to be a breeze.  I can sure
understand your nervousness, though!

I hope things work out with #4 :-)

Did you get my e-mail?  I did write back, but sometimes they don't go
through.

Hi Ginger-lyn,

Thanks for the surgery purrs.  They worked! I was very calm going to the
hospital, about 70 miles from where I live and during the time I was there.
I was nothing at all like the nerveous wreck I was when I wrote to you
folks.

#4 and I have worked out a system.  I feed him outside morning and evening.
He no longer tries to get into the  house.  He lets me know he has arrived
by this big yowl, you would think there was a mountain lion out there.

This email thing between you and me is griving me crazy!  No, I didn't get
yours.  I sent one to you before I left for Tampa.  I'm not even going to
ask if you got it.  I'm just going to ask you here if I can send you a card
to addressed to your P.O. Box which is on your web site.  Hopefully that
will work!

Glad that Brando is home and well, but what a "trip" to get him.  There are
worth it though aren't they!

Yep, it will!  Some spammers have taken over my glsummer addy, and I
think that's why a lot of other providers are blocking it.  Grrrrrr.
I do have another one, and I'll try to remember to send you one from
there, and I bet you'll get it.  If you sent me a second e-mail, nope,
I didn't get it.  Darned Earthstink!

I have never rehomed a cat simply because it has sprayed in the house.
Had I done this, I would have years ago rehomed my beloved Castor  (RB 8
years ago) and now would be trying to rehome another of my feline
family. You can see that happening ? :^)

I will admit to sometimes finding it a pain to have to work out where
the smell is coming from, but once I've tracked it down, warm water and
a product that destroys odours soon gets rid of it :^)

> Hi Sheenah,

If I rehomed the cats that owned me because they sprayed in the house I
would lose the cat of heart, Mr. Pumpkin and the neighborhood terrorist who
lives here, Victor Velcro.

The problem I referred to, and perhaps not clearly, is that a stray cat male
cat was coming into the house, eating our cats food and spraying on the way
out.  When he did that it caused Mr. Pumpkin to spray to remark  his
territory.

I wouldn't mind at all for the stray to come on in and become part of the
family if it worked out that way, BUT, until the issue of the spraying
became settled he would have to stay out.

And settled could very well mean me becoming more educated regarding the
interaction of two adult male cats.  Mr. Pumpkin was neutered at the
appropriated age and both David and I were quite surprised to see that he
could spray.  Victor Velcro also neutered also sprays.

The situation has leveled off in that #4 comes at breakfast and dinner and
yowls for food now.  I feed him outside.  He does not even attempt to come
inside.

Thanks for your insight.

I've had *female* cats who sprayed.

You could try spraying Feliway around the areas he sprays?

Thanks Karen, I heard of other's success with Feliway but for some reason or
other have not tried it.  I'll pick some up and use it for when he does his
thing if he come inside the house again.

Dear Polonca and Soncek,

Thank you so very much for the purrs and best wishes.  They worked
wonderfully!

Cat #4 comes for breakfast and dinner every day, we don't see him at all
inbetween time.

He is a very interesting looking cat.  I will try to get a photo of him.

Thanks so much for the purrs, Marina.  They worked super well.  The surgery
became a bit more involved than first thought it would be.  There are four
parathyroids on the thyroid gland, it was planned that one was
malfunctioning and needed to be removed.  It was discovered that two and a
half parathyroids needed to be removed. So surgery proceeded accordingly.  I
am home, up and around, smurggling every cat that walks by and feeling
better by the hour!

I love the adventures of Miranda (I still call her Mere)  When she was Mere
I found the way you worked the noun and adjective     (Mere, mere) into the
posts was just great, looked forward to seeing them.

Victor Velcro, our resident terrorist, is a Russian Blue mix.  He has golden
eyes instead of green, and a patch of five white hairs on his front right
shoulder.  Otherwise he is all RB.  He is without a doubt the most
intelligent cat I have every encountered.  And talk about having a mind of
his own, YES!

Thanks again,
Charleen

Glad to hear it went so well. I had my whole thyroid gland removed in
1985, a somewhat larger operation, but necessary as there was a
malignant tumour.

I still call her Mere, too. But when she does something bad, Miranda is
much more effectful. ;o) Yeah, the mere punning was fun for a while.
Didn't want to overdo it, though. ;o)

Hi Elise, Gossamer and Jeeves,

Thank so very much for those purrs, they really worked.  I was so calm the
day of the surgery!  Everything went well, there was a little surprise in
that the doctor removed more "stuff" that he had originally planned to, but
it was necessary, so be it.  I'm fine and up around and chasing cats for
kitty kisses and pets.

Even cat #4 is behaving himself!  We do see a cat #5 on the horizen also, a
black and gray tiger.  We'll just wait and see what happens.

Thanks again very much,
Charleen
