I'm a network technician by trade and drew the short straw for on-call duty
this Memorial Day weekend. It had been really quiet this weekend - no
pages, no phone calls, etc. until this afternoon.
Mistletoe (Missy) was in her computer supervisor's preferred position -
lying on the computer table between my tummy and the keyboard with her head
lazily draped across the crook in my left elbow while I peruse RPCA. She
was sound asleep - so much so that even her purring had quieted...until...
DEEDLE-DEEDLE-DEEDLE. The pager went off. I guess it wouldn't have been so
bad had (a) it had been set on vibrate instead of the most raucous audible
setting (so it will wake me if it goes off during the night) and/or (b) it
had been in the belt holster instead of in my shirt pocket - the one closest
to her head (1-2 inches separation).
She levitated a good 6 inches and took off for parts unknown, leaving a
trail of blood (mine) from where she had "scratched off".
Sam, signing off to go look for Band-Aids.

Poor Missy! And for you, I hope it was minimal scratch-off damage.
When I had to do pager duty I always kept it on an audible alarm. I tried
the vibrate setting once and it went off in the middle of a meeting just as
the room got quiet. I literally shrieked! Of course it gave everyone a
good laugh and that was fine because the meeting was about as interesting as
a box of gravel. I think a few folks were envious I got to leave the room
:)

Yeah, a pager on vibrate feels like a really angry bumblebee in your
pocket, doesn't it? lol I've got one of those, but it's buried deep
in the bottom of my backpack and I think the battery's dead anyway.
The important people know my cell phone and home phone numbers best.

*Ouch*. Serves you right for not setting your pager on "purr" :-)

It's a US national holiday to honor and remember our fallen soldiers.

Is it different to Veterans Day?
I'm guessing it would be similar to ANZAC day here in Australian & New
Zealand, although that also has its own special meaning as an undercurrent,
like "the coming of age" of our nations.

Yes, Veteran's Day is to honor our soldiers who served in the armed forces,
Memorial Day is to honor our soldiers who died in battle.

Many of us also use the opportunity as a special day to remember our loved
ones who have died. Make a special point of placing flowers on their
graves, cleaning gravesites as needed etc.
Veterans Day is more for the old guys to have parades and wave the flag etc.
More for the living vererans.

Veterans Day is November 11. It used to be known as Armistice Day, as it
was the date the armistice officially ended World War I.

>What is Memorial Day about?
Memorial Day started as the day when the widows of soldiers killed in
the American Civil War put flowers on the graves - Decoration Day.
