Whistling

The weirdest thing happened last night.  A commercial got me to whistling
(that and feeling good about the interview yesterday).  At first Sammy came
up to me and stood with her paws in my lap straining her mouth towards my
face.  When I leaned down towards her she licked my lips.  A little while
later I started whistling again and this time she came up to the back of my
chair and bit the back of my upper arm (lightly - no blood drawn).

Anyone else here with a cat who reacts to whistling?

Yep, and all I can say is, even so, a cat's mouth is still not as dirty as a
human's* so think about that the next time you kiss someone.

*When Bandit bit me not long my doctor said that the only bite more likely
to get infected is a human bite.

Why gross? I kiss my cats all the time!

So?  There are plenty of human tongues that have been in
unsavory places, too - and you're less likely to catch some
gross disease fro a cat's tongue!

I'd guess Sammy was asking you to stop?   Chessie hates whistling (I think
it hurts her ears) - we have an agreement that when I whistle, she comes
running and I stop as soon as her paw touches my knee.  She has almost the
same reaction to high-pitched singing.....Lorna

When we had my beloved DurDur (RB '97) during 80's,
those little electronic tune-playing keychain things, as well as the holiday
lights w/auto electronic music were quite popular, and whenever I'd turn one
on DurDur would come over and stand on his back legs to put his paw on my
knee in protest (he hated the high-pitched music sounds!) and if I ignored
his protest, he'd then jump up beside me and gently bite my hand. I don't
think cats like
piercing, high tones.

The cats here react like this to the ringtones on the mobile.

QC used to bite through the phone cord on our kitchen phone.  We no longer
have that phone and he no longer eats phone cords.  He also used to react to
certain sounds on the computer the same way.  I went for two years without
sound on my computer because QC hates high pitch sounds.

LOL. Not sure whether I've told this story here before or not. My boy
Spot (RB) reacted strongly to whistling. I could get him to come by
whistling certain songs. Favorites were Jingle Bells & Mary Had a
Little Lamb. (My whistling repertoire is not broad.) But I don't think
he really liked it. One day I started whistling while lying on my bed.
He ran in the room, jumped on the bed, ran up my body, bit me on the
lips, & ran out.

Last night I started singing, not a common occurrence. Moxie ran in the
room & jumped up on my lap & seemed perturbed. I think they don't like
those odd sounds & high-pitched noises coming from our mouths.

Jim whistles for Cinder when she is out of sight, and she comes running,
even if it entails jumping back over the fence from exploring forbidden
territory in the neighbor's yard.

Yes.  Stinky.  He comes immediately when I whistle and crawls all over
me, too.

Further down the street where we used to live lived a very friendly
black tom kitten (his hoomins never had him done ... hisspit).  He spent
as much time with any of the neighbours as he did at "home", and that
included us. If I whistled as I walked up the road to our house, you
could almost guarantee that he'd come bouncing along the street to meet
me.

Sometimes I warble a few notes, and the cats will give me funny/annoyed
looks.  I used to study singing, so it isn't like I sound like fingers
on the blackboard, either. =o) I think it's true they don't like high
pitched noises.  There's a kid in my complex studying the recorder, and
he/she is terrible at it, lots of squeals and breathy squeaks.  (I
don't know whether it is a boy or girl, because I only HEAR the darned
thing--I don't get to see who is playing it.) Anyway, three pairs of
cat ears start pointing sideways when the invisible recorder player
starts up. =o)

No (I haven't whistled for ages), but this reminds me of when I was
practising a talk I was going to give at a conference. Usually, I speak
Swedish to my cats, but this paper I was giving was in English, and when
I started reading it aloud, Nikki got very concerned. She cautiously
approached me and veeeery carefully stretched out her neck to sniff my
mouth. I was reading it to time it, but had to interrupt several times,
since I was laughing so hard at Nikki. In the end I just had to trust
that it would last the allotted time, and hope I wouldn't start laughing
at the memory of Nikki's reaction in the middle of my talk.

LOL!!!!! When I was studying Italian in high school, I got a similar
reaction out of Misty (RB). We were supposed to read a passage aloud in
class the next day, so I sat and practiced mine. In fact, I decided that
the kitty curled up on the bed would make an ideal audience of one, so I
sat next to her and started reading. Misty's eyes got very wide, and she
started to sniff my face. Then she let out a quizzical, "Meow?"

I guess that's one way to determine how well a cat understands the
language you normally use to speak to the kitty -- address said feline in
a totally unfamiliar language and watch for a reaction. If the cat's Not
Happy about not recognizing ANY of the words you're using, then you know
s/he's paying attention. ;o)

Speaking of languages, Misty took interest in my practice sessions when I
was studying American Sign Language. I used to sit next to her on the bed
and practice my vocabulary. She wasn't sure WHAT, exactly, I was doing.
But she was sure it was something interesting, because I was so intently
focused on it. So she'd come over and sniff my fingers and hands, and try
to figure out what I was up to. :o)

I've tried what limited Spanish I'm familiar with on Felix, and he
doesn't seem bothered by it. Either he just doesn't care what I'm
saying or my Spanish still sounds an awful lot like English to him.

They always look so concerned when there is some weird sound coming
out of your mouth.  When Stinky was a hoolikitten, he would sit on the
corner of the sink, and watch me go through my morning or evening
routine (he sometimes still does), and the funniest thing was his
reaction to gargling.  The first time, he immediately puffed up all
over. ;)  He eventually nerved himself to sit back on his hind legs,
put a paw on my chin, and examined and sniffed my mouth, much as Nikki
did with you. ;)  It was very hard not to spray mouthwash all over the
bathroom.

Misty (RB) used to do upside-down-kitty in response to whistling.

(Harmony (RB) would occasionally do upside-down-kitty in response to
operatic singing on TV.)

Otherwise, so far I haven't seen the kitties react toooo much. Yet. Now
that I've written that, of course Captain and Stanley will find something
to do every time they hear a whistle, I'm sure. ;o)

I just tried it.  Vino was peacefully vegetating behind my computer
monitor.  I started whistling and Vino immediately jerked up and came
over.  He was very agitated and kept stalking around in front of me on
the desk.  He kept sniffing my mouth.  Then Dennis began to whistle
from accross the room so Vino went over to him and did the same thing.
Then Dennis switched from a regular whistle to a wolf whistle and that
just scared Vino so he ran off.  He went to his self scritcher and
scritched himself to make himself feel better.  Now he is meatloafing
in a shelf.  No one is whistling anymore.

Oh yes, whistling is banned in my house, or I get a nip off Otis, I
can't even listen to the theme tune to the X Files, I have to turn the
volume off or he seems to think it's me doing the whistling and goes
bananas!  Sometimes if my partner is round we both whistle to tease
Otis, but it doesn't confuse him, he still has a pop at me!
Susan M - 28 May 2005 15:44 GMT
I whistle all the time - it's a skill I have ;-)  The boys are used to it.

When I use my special "come to me" whistle - they both come running.  For
Otis, it's like its programed into him.  He doesn't hesitate but seems
surprised to find himself running over to see me.  Chester is a little more
discriminating!

Neither one seems to care if I whistle, but Gossamer apparently hates
any sound that comes out of my computer.  She immediately jumps up on
the desk and tries to bury my speakers :)
