Dear Cat loving friends,

I know that lots of people need purrs these days, and on an ongoing basis,
but I need to ask everyone to spare a few purrs, prayers and good thoughts
for my brave friend Kim.

As a quick recap, Last spring at about this time, Kim was diagnosed with a
recurrence of Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She underwent the normal radiation and
chemotherapy treatments until last November, when the cancer stopped
responding to the chemotherapy. Over Christmas, she underwent a stem-cell
transplant at the Mayo Clinic  which was at least initially successful.
Since then, she has slowly been regaining her health, weight and strength,
but not as much as anyone would like.  Just in the past week, she
experienced shortness of breath, which was one of the symptoms that lead to
her original diagnosis last year.  As of yesterday, the Hodgkins is back, in
the right lung this time, and on her liver. The liver tumors are new, as
she's never had trouble with that before, and to have the Hodgkins back
barely four months after a transplant is a very serious development.  So Kim
is back to where she was last spring, and is even worse off, if possible.
The stem-cell transplant, although it bought her some time, means that her
bone marrow is like a two year old's and she cannot withstand the
chemotherapy dose that an otherwise healthy adult could tolerate. So she has
very limited treatment options while facing an apparently aggressive, not to
say vicious variety of Hodgkins. Kim insists she will fight for her life,
but at the same time, will try to pack as much as she can in if the Hodgkins
wins the battle. She wants to have no regrets, and leave no important things
unsaid. It's a terrible blow to her parents too, as they already lost Kim's
older sister to cancer about ten years ago.

A week ago, Kim had been joyfully planning a summer vacation on the east
coast, as she spent most of last summer in the hospital.  But now, she has
more pain and illness to look forward to instead.  She IS looking forward to
one thing, which is her wedding to her fiance, who has already stuck by her
in the sickness and health aspects.  They're planning an August wedding,
which will not actually be legal, but it will be a wedding in all the other
important aspects. (Her fiance is Canadian, and squaring up all the legal
documentation and red tape would take more time than they can spare.) It
will be a ceremony of their commitment to one another, and screw the gummint
for the moment.

So whatever prayers and good thoughts you can spare on her behalf, please
send them towards Bottineau North Dakota.
Thanks,
Melissa

Oh dear :( That is the most terrible case of Hodgkins. Purrs that she can
somehow overcome it. How very sad :(

Melissa,

My heart goes out to your dear friend, Kim.  My mom is currently fighting
lung cancer.  In January, she went into remission.  We were so happy, but it
was short lived, as her 3 month check up showed that the lung cancer is
already back.

Cancer is so evil.  It robs the innocent of so much.  Plenty of
purrrrrrrrssssssssss here for Kim!!!

And Purrs for your Mom, too, Laurie.  I'm sorry to hear that her
reprieve and yours  was so short-lived. It seems SO unfair in both
cases for the cancer to have come back so soon! Not that there's ever a
GOOD time to have it....

Thank you one and all for your kind wishes on Kim's behalf.  She's a
case study in how nature can sometimes deal  a good person a LOUSY
hand.  She deserves so much better than she's getting.

I will send prayers, purrs, good thoughts, and anything else that's
positive for your friend and her family. May she beat the odds AND this
disease for as long as humanly possible, especially if that means that
they can get the disease back into remission and keep it there.

Will do.  We hate cancer of any kind around here.  Purrs and healing

There's a never-ending supply of purrs and good thoughts, Melissa.  We'll be
sending a bunch out ND-way.

If she's in a center that does stem-cell transplants, they probably are
aware of new therapies, but it never hurts to check. There is a new
treatment, IIRC approved rather than experimental, using monoclonal
antibodies that have been modified to remove many of the side effects.
There is a further variation that attaches radioisotopes to these
antibodies, allowing the radiation dose to be very low because the
radiation is delivered to the specific cancer cells.

She is in contact with her Mayo Clinic doctor who was in charge of her stem
cell transplant, and she did mention that he talked about using some new
therapies to combat this re-recurrence. When she and I talked by phone on
Wednesday, I couldn't really absorb  the medical details except that  "The
Hodgkins is back" due to all the attendant emotions.  Thank goodness she
does live in the same general area of the country as the Mayo Clinic, and
will be getting the best of whatever care is available. The balancing act
will be to knock out the Hodgkins while not killing her with the intended
cure, since her physical reserves are already so low.  But she says she's
getting married, even if she has to go down the aisle in a wheelchair with
her oxygen tank right next to her.

Thanks, everyone.

I don't want to give undue optimism, but the treatment for Hodgkin's
disease has steadily been improving, especially with younger patients,
such that actual cure -- no recurrence in over 20 years -- does happen.
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma does not have as good a prognosis, but, again,
there have been major strides and you can usually get at least a couple
of remissions.

Best wishes to her, and many purrs.  The only thing to argue about with
Mayo is where in the top 3-5 hospitals it fits, and, frankly, among Mass
General, Hopkins and Mayo, it's really hard to pick. People shift back
and forth on staffs, but they are all outstanding.

I'm so very sorry to hear about your friend, how awful!
