Susan M - 26 May 2005 05:28 GMT Hi there:
I was out in the backyard trying to plant when the cats, particuarly Chester, started being crazy. They were running around chasing each other and then Chester climbed the chainlink fence and finally, the huge ornamental crabapple, currently in blossom. He had a big fall from there (he's just fine) when he broke a dead branch.

Not all have perfect focus but I was moving fast!

He looked cute up there but I'd freak out if I saw Persia up a tree. (Of course she can't climb up a tree without front claws). Lovely photos, thank you, Susan. Hug the kitties for me.

Over the past nine years, he's become quite good so now I never worry about him. He used to terrify me.

Leong - 26 May 2005 15:19 GMT After seeing the picture of Chester running with his tail up, I have a question wrt tail position. Does a tail up means the cat is happy and confident? Rusty only has his tail up sometimes. Other times his tail is held horizontally or even down. Does that mean he's not too happy or feelling inferior?

Paws around my hand during a tummy rub around here are rapidly followed by extended claws, nips and bunny kicks. So paws around the hand her, mean get out while the getting is good.

I seem to recall that someone posted a link way back when that purported to interpret a cat's mood from the way they held their tail. I no longer have the link, because as I recall my girls had never read up on proper tail sign language - what the site claimed rarely matched my observations of LB and Sammy.
>One of their personal signs of 'happiness' is rolling >onto their backs and waving their paws in their air and letting me >tickle their tummies. :) Both LB and Spot do this, while Sammy is too busy rubbing up against me to get my attention. This morning Spot laid in front of Sammy and rolled around on her back. Sammy approached and laid down withing a couple feet of her and watched. I think Spot is really trying to get LB and Sam to accept her, and the intregration is going much faster than I feared, what with all the window hissing that went on before I let Spot inside.
NOTE: Spot has the SOFTEST fur of any cat I've ever held. As far as she's concerned she has already found her home, and I'm leaning in that direction myself - though I'm sure none of you would have suspected such a thing ;-)

So what does it mean when the cat carries the tail almost parallel with its back? Three of mine do this to some extent - two are siblings, the third is unrelated. Snowball can move hers from tucked under to touching her shoulders.

Three of mine do this to some extent - two are > siblings, the third is unrelated. Snowball can move hers from tucked > under to touching her shoulders. My Mandy did that a lot when she was younger. It seemed to mean about the same as having the tail straight up - she did it when she was up and on the go, and usually very interested in something. She also held it up straight, and it was so funny when she'd think she was totally concealed somewhere, perhaps while stalking a cat toy, but there's be a tail sticking up from behing the box or whatever she was hiding behind!

Three of mine do this to some extent - two are [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > somewhere, perhaps while stalking a cat toy, but there's be a tail > sticking up from behing the box or whatever she was hiding behind! Clifford (RB) shared similar tail logic. He liked to play hide and seek the cat, but he apparently had a rule that tails were invisible, and would be indignant if a protruding tail allowed him to be found under furniture. Given that he had an long, muscular and impressive tail, coal black other than the only non-black fur on his body, the last inch snow white, it was hard to miss.

If the tail is erect with whole length or tip quivering gently: The cat is showing affection.
It's so cute, his tail usually fluffs at the base when he does this, and the tip vibrates quite quickly actually, he's usually purring and/or meowing when making this tail gesture.

As Willie gets more or more demonstrative in his affections this is his most endearing also, particularly when I get home form somewhere he greets me this way. Nom

If she's laying down and it's flipping, I can tell she's thinking of getting into mischief. Also means "if you touch me right now I'll grab you and bunny kick you into submission".
There was a link, I think Theresa posted it a couple of years ago? about what cat's tails mean in various positions. It was fun, not necessarily accurate.

Susan M - 27 May 2005 03:44 GMT Whenever I call them, their tails go straight up in the air and they come running! From what I understand, it is a happy position. I know to keep my hands to myself when their tails start thumping though :-) I think that a horizontal tail means they're just fine.

Thanks Theresa - my dad, who grew up on a farm, calls my cats "cat" and pretends to be rather unattached to them. That being said, every time he is over, he marvels over Otis. He helped search for Otis for the 12 days he escaped from the cattery while we were on vacation. He keeps saying "I never thought I'd see that cat again". To see him playing with Chester and chasing bugs is almost to much for my dad :-)

I have both a full-sized apple tree and a full-sized peach tree, although both trees are elderly and tend to drop most of the fruit before it is mature, and the squirrels get most of what remains. This year, however, I don't have any fruit on either tree. A warm spell in early March made both trees bloom earlier than usual, and several days of below-freezing temperatures then killed all of the blossoms.

I'd say we used to have snow once a year and it would last about a day. But I did live in Yellowknife for a year, so I know cold! I don't miss it a bit and I can't say I miss the dreary rain of Vancouver either. But I also hate the heat and humidity here in Thailand. It makes it pretty much impossible to do anything outdoors except lie on the beach and even that's really hot. The water is so warm it's not even refreshing.
