Thread rating: |
Catnipped - 24 May 2005 00:12 GMT I've been looking for (cheap) suits to give me an Executive Assistant "image" for (hopefully) any interviews I might get (please gawd soon!). I found a killer sale at Sears the weekend, and got this suit *and* the blouse - all three pieces for $40. Then I found the shoes on sale at Ross for $12!
Does it look Executive Assistant-y?

Well, I guess that's that. On the other hand, you probably have a lot more power as an EA than as a webperson =)

Yeah, in New York City their average salary is $80,000 - here in Houston it's $50,000, but goes up with experience and extra skills. The *ONLY* good thing about my my current job is that I'm working for the Chairman of the Board of a large corporation (who used to be the President / CEO before the merger) - so that counts for a lot when looking for my next job (of course I have to refrain from mentioning what a rich b*itch, spoiled brat he is - or maybe that would count for the good since I've managed it without killing him yet! ;>).

You know the higher someone gets on the corporate ladder the more they act like kindergarteners or worse. Actually, I've seen behavior from VPs that kindergarteners would be put in time out for.
Good luck.

The whole department I work for is *terrified* of our General Manager's executive assistant. She runs the place, not the GM! And boy howdy will she rip strips off you if you've stuffed things up and made more work for her! Mind you, things run *really* smoothly with her around (and the place falls apart when she's on holidays) so she must be *really* good at her job. I think she even keep sthe GM in line!

Someone had told me they thought Sears' quality had slipped, so I wasn't expecting much from their remodeled Pasadena store. (I certainly was a bit startled at the rank of shopping carts - ala Walmart - which confronted me when I walked in the door.) However, to my surprise, they have greatly expanded their "Women's" (aka "Plus Sizes") department, and judging from the brand names, the quality can't be too bad. My only criticism (which holds true for most large-size stores) is that their fashions nowadays are too young for the older woman. (Makes me think that there must be an awful lot of heavyweight younger women out there - time was when one seldom put on wieght until of "mature" years.)

[quoted text clipped - 18 lines] > there must be an awful lot of heavyweight younger women out there - time > was when one seldom put on wieght until of "mature" years.) I know. I've been overweight all my life, so I never thought I'd have this "problem", but I can't find anything in my size in a mature style or for my height. I have to look in the "Petite" section, and then everything comes halfway to my knees and elbows - *and* the fashions are geared towards teeny-boppers. "Misses" and "Juniors" usually start at size 7, and "Ladies" start at a 9! I can't find anything at all for a 5'5" size 5!
I was watching "What Not to Wear" the other day and they were doing a make-over for a fairly large woman. The woman complained that no matter how much they gave her to spend, she couldn't find anything decent to buy. Stacy (the lady style guru) agreed and *finally* said something about the fashions made for "Women" sizes. She admitted that they're horrible and designers *really* need to start designing nice things for larger women (who can *possibly* believe that large floral or paisley, neon-colored prints would look flattering on *any* woman, much less on a large woman!!??). Why can't designers just devote 1/10th of their line to "normal" women (mature women of *all* sizes)? We don't all want to look like an emaciated 20-year-old model walking down a runway with most of her skinny body sticking out for public view!!!

EvelynVogtGamble(Divamanque) - 25 May 2005 19:10 GMT > I'd love to know where Oprah used to get her clothes! Well, a lot of budding singers, etc. have their own aspiring designer, who does their clothes to order, for the publicity value (and little more than the cost of materials).

You wouldn't have a problem finding stuff to fit here. Well, if it didn't fit it would be because most stuff would be too *small* and not too large! But lately I've noticed that Thais are getting bigger. Must be all those KFC's and Pizza Huts and Dunkin' Donuts and 7/11's everywhere!!! Anyway, the sizes seem to be getting a tad bigger. Sometimes I can even fit into an L now, not an XL! Yay! This makes shopping great because there's so much more to choose from and the prices here are really cheap :-) -- Britta "There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast." -- Unknown Check out pictures of Vino at: http://photos.yahoo.com/badwilson click on the Vino album

How about shiny leather skirts and pants for anything larger than a size 10? (Yet most of the large-size catalogs show them - of th size 44, for God's sake - the mind boggles!)
And oh, how I WISH they'd abolish the "empire" waist, which makes even the slimmest woman look pregnant! ("Real" empire fashions were gathered tight under the breasts, and pretty much form-fitting from there down - not particularly flattering to the large woman, but attractive on her slimmer sisters.)

Probably because too many women can't really SEE themselves when they look in a mirror! While I was still maintaining my weight, I was often tempted by fashions I used to look well in when I was younger. Fortunately, I am able to "see myself as others see me", and refrained from buying them!

That is a stereotype that was never really true. Especially in a multiracial world. And it made life hell for the not so slim younger women. Aside from those who were never slim, there are a lot of women who are never thin again after they have their first child. That said, I do have a hard time finding clothes suitable to my own age and tastes anymore.

However, as we see in the news every day, Americans are fatter than ever. There has been an enormous increase in obesity and overweight in the past ten years, among young people and children. So there are, indeed, many more fat young women than there used to be. Obesity is an epidemic.

I think Catnipped has it right - everything is designed for "teeny-boppers", nowadays - whatever the size range!
