Flippy - 23 May 2005 04:00 GMT
Hi all,

As you know I had to take Tiffy to the Eye specialist last friday, 13th May.
She was diagnosed with viral keratitis in her left eye. She was given the
following medications:

Idoxuridine drops: 10 times daily
Vibravet antibiotic tablets: twice daily
Lysine Powder: twice daily

Today, Tiffy's 2nd eye examination shows that she still has viral keratitis
in her left eye. She was given the following medications:

Lysine Powder: twice daily
Zovirax Ophthalmic Ointment: 8 times daily
Interferon A injections: once every 3 days

I have an appointment to take Tiffy back to the specialist in 10 days.
Hopefully her eye will be on the road to recovery by then. I will keep you
informed.

Purrs to all,

That's quite a regime!  Is it a struggle to apply the medicines to her
eye?  I can't imagine Lucy letting me do anything close to that....
We'll certaintely send some healing purrs Tiffy's way.  Keep us
posted...

Thank you, Lucy's Mom. Yes, it is quite a regime but it has to be done. This
morning when I gave Tiffy her first injection she screamed like a banshee,
poor thing. Since we started the medication she runs away every time she
sees me come near her. Hopefully her eye will get better soon so that we can
get back to normal.

We appreciate the the purrs.

Flippy, Willie has had significant eye trouble ever since he joined the
cloder, I no longer remember the diagnosis last summer but the vet
consulted a specialist and came up with Megastrol 5mg.  I indavertantly
gave him a whole pill the first day and his eye improved within hours
and has been fine ever since.  FWIW, Norm

Strange...the only Megastrol I can find is for external eye use, and has
ingredients that should not be given by mouth.

It contains dexamethasone, a corticosteroid somewhat more potent than
prednisone. From what Flippy says that Tiffy is getting, the specialist
is treating her for herpes simplex keratitis. Megastrol has a specific
warning against using it there; corticosteroids can have disastrous
effect with this disease.

OTOH, if Willie had had, for example, allergic problems, I can easily
see corticosteroids clearing them very quickly.

Well, we can all imagine how much good it does to tell a cat something
is for its own good.  Hoping and purring that this clears up PDQ.

It's a sensible regime, if tiring. One thought: the active ingredient in
Zovirax is acyclovir, which, for human conditions like skin herpes, has
to be taken 5 times a day. A related drug, valacyclovir, needs to be
taken much less frequently, and the eye drops might not need to be given
as often.

I simply don't know if the new opthalmic preparation of valacyclovir is
available in Australia. Drug availability differs; idoxuridine, for
example, has been replaced by a different drug in the USA, trifluridine.
Trifluridine still needs to be given frequently -- every 2 hours while
awake -- but can shift to every 4 hours if there is evidence of healing.

It's great that you were able to see a specialist. The treatment regime
is apparently for herpes simplex keratitis.  If you saw your regular vet
first and were referred without treatment, you have a wise vet. Many eye
inflammations respond well to an antibiotic plus a corticosteroids, but
corticosteroids with herpes keratitis can horribly increase the effects
of the disease.

Flippy, I don't know how I missed this originally, but I did -- many get
well purrs for Tiffany's poor eye and purrs for your nerves also -- I can't
imagine how much fun it must be to be putting eye drops in her eyes.

Perhaps it was the mental image of taffy that made your fingers stick?

Flippy,
I missed your original email about having to take Tiffy to TED for an
eye exam.  Purrs and gentle headbutts to Tiffy that her eye infection
clears up quickly with the new medicine.
