I'd rather take a sharp stick to the eye that do <fill in the blank>?
We'll I've learned I'd rather not take a sharp stick to the eye! I was
trimming the boxwood hedge Wednesday night and a woody plant was growing
up in the middle of one so I stuck my head into the shrub to be able to
cut the invader off at the ground. A branch of the boxwood poked me in
the eye. It didn't really hurt at the time but about 2 hours later the
pain began. OMG! Such pain. The next morning I stopped by the Eye
Clinic on my way into the office and had it checked. I have scratched
the cornea. I didn't stay very long at the office yesterday because of
the pain and haven't been online until now, so I'll send bulk purrs
right now to everyone and as I can tolerate it will answer individual
emails. For now: Nathan; Basho, Tom and Victor; Nikki (poor Nikki) and
Marina; Pat and Beatrice; Yowie; Catherine; Karen; Helen's Bitties;
Sheenah (a candle lit for Thalia, my heart is breaking for you); Brando
and Ginger-lyn; Tweed (of course); and anyone I might be missing (it's
kind of hard reading with one eye) - you all have our purrs and gentle
headbutts and best wishes and hugs.

What my mom and I have always said is that so-and-so is "Better than a
poke in the eye with a sharp stick." ;)
I would generally rather stick red-hot needles in my eyes than endure
certain things, such as Jennifer Lopez movies. ;)

OUCH! I've had a scratched cornea and it's not fun. Had to wear dark
glasses for a few days because the littlest bit of light hurt. Purrs on the
way for yours to heal quickly.

Having had a corneal abrasion, I feel for you. Perhaps sharing the
comedy involved with its treatment might help. While looking closely at
a notebook, turning pages, I managed a paper cut of the eye.
I thought I could make it to the morning to see an opthalmologist, but
around 1 AM, it was intolerable. Thinking ahead, I called two of the
local medical school hospitals to see who had an opthalmology resident
in the hospital, not just on call. Georgetown claimed they had one.
When I got there, they told me the opthalmologist had just checked out.
I got the duty intern. Think Doogie Houser, but younger, and not
precisely the brightest bulb in the chandelier.
An experienced ER nurse took me back to a treatment room. Young Dr.
Feelgood looked at me and muttered to himself -- but I could hear it
"now what do I do with this?" I suggested, "Get an eye dressing tray?"
From my good eye, I noticed the nurse giving me a strange look, but she
brought the tray.
Our Hero then stared poking through it, obviously trying to find
something he recognized, and making it exceptionally obvious he had
slept through opthalmology class. Politely, I inquired "Are you having
trouble finding the fluoroscein strips?"
"YES! I remember those from when I got my contact lenses!" Well, I was
a little more comforted to know he had SOME exposure to an eye
professional. He reached in, tore one open, and started to stick it in
my eye.
With catlike reflexes and a grip of steel, I grabbed his wrist, and
suggested "Don't we want to apply a local anesthetic, and also wet the
strip first."
"Oh yeah!....ummmm...which anesthetic and what do I wet it with?"
Do you know how much it hurts to roll your eyes when you have a corneal
abrasion? As I said "Pontocaine and normal saline," I observed the
nurse, red-faced and covering her mouth with both hands to hold in the
giggles, sort of convulsively slide to the floor over in a corner, her
chest shaking with suppressed laughter. Well, I was glad that someone
concluded that SOMEONE in the room knew what to do.
So, I got him through the exam, which verified there were no foreign
bodies in the eye. At this point, he actually remembered that he should
put a pressure dressing over my eye. He asked me, appropriately, to
hold the pad in place until he got the first strip of tape over it.
Tape. Bandage. Tape. Tape. Tape again. With a sigh of obvious relief,
he cut the last tape strip with bandage scissors, delighted to be
finished and have a chance to get away.
Then, reality crushed in. With one hand, he put down the bandage
scissors. Then, he tried to put down the one he had over my eye.
He had taped his fingers into the dressing.
The nurse decided this was too good to keep to herself, went out, and
came back with several other staff members, and everyone, including
myself but excluding the intern, gave in to hysterics. As he stood,
with no place to go, I insisted that whoever was to cut him loose had to
demonstrate they had stopped laughing for two full minutes. I did not
want a shaking hand cutting his hand free that close to my eye.

Julie purrs and doggie drool that your eye heals up quickly.
Howard, Thank you for such a wonderful story. Glad everything came out ok,
and you can see the humor in it.

Many purrs for your eye to heal, Julie. In high school, I got hit in the
eye with a Frisbee and had the same thing happen. Did they give you
antibiotics, too? I remember that my eye healed pretty quickly. Purrs for
the pain to subside, too.

Ouch! Many years ago, I walked into the branch of a tree and scratched my
cornea, so I can completely sympathize.
Purrs for a quick healing.

Ugh, purrs for you too.
I've scratched my cornea with a stick in the eye 3 times and it sucks!
It sucks so bad!!! I have actually considered wearing safety goggles
when hiking in the woods ;-)

Purrs coming back at you.
I had a similar injury a couple years ago, caught a rock in the eye
while doing yard work. No pain until the wee hours of the next
morning, but did it ever hurt then! I ended up wearing an eye patch
for a while. The thing about my injury was that the pain stopped as
soon as I stopped trying to use the eye. As I remember, I didn't get
anything pain medication, just antibiotic eye ointment.
