Basho diagnosis

Well, not really a firm diagnosis. The ultrasound revealed a small
kidney and a normal one, TED thinks this is why the creatinine and BUN
were a bit high. She's not concerned about this.
Lymph nodes were a bit large, but that could be one of many things.
The small intestine wall was enlarged in certain parts. TED says this
can be one of two things: IBD or cancer (lymphosarcoma?). The only way
to have a positive cancer diagnosis would be with exploratory surgery.
We're going to try a diet of IVD (no corn, rice, chicken, beef, fish)
for six weeks and monitor his weight. We also got metronidazole which
he's already taken. He hates the IVD food I got. :(

Purrs that his can be solved with a diet change and it's not cancer.

Victor, not feeling well.

I know that feeling at the pit of your stomach when a furbaby might be
seriously ill. We're sending lots of purrs that the diet change will
restore Basho to his former self.

Mega purrs coming that this can be fixed with diet.  Like we told Tweed, try
and keep a positive attitude about this - think good, healing thoughts at
Basho and innundate him with love!

Megapurrs  that his can be solved with a diet change and it's not cancer.
And that he suddenly decides he loves the IVD food.

For what it's worth, remember Francis is not supposed to be here - kidneys
failing - and he is very much here, alive and a happy cat following a diet
of normal senior cat food (he won't touch the renal stuff) and a Fortekor
tablet once a day. Here's hoping that basho can have a similar happy
outcome.

My boyhood d*g and best buddy, Terry, was diagnosed with renal failure
and given 6 weeks. He was absolutely miserable eating k/d, and my mother
finally decided to give him his idea of quality of life -- and brought
home a sack of Gravy Train.

This emaciated dog quickly put back his muscle, and lived another three
years -- dying of heart disease.

See if the vet has a recipe for an IVD diet you can prepare yourself.
Sounds like he needs lamb and probably vitamins and minerals.

Once I got used to it making pet food was pretty easy.  Once I had a recipe
I knew they would eat, I'd prepare a big batch and freeze it in two day
containers.

Victor, I feel for you and Basho.  Just so you don't feel alone here, Omar
is going in for an ultrasound and consultation next Friday -- he's 5 years
old, does have IBD and has been on 0.5 ml of (fish-flavored) metranidazole
2x/day since the beginning of the year I think.  His IBD has been managed
pretty well with the metranidazole -- I have found that he can tolerate the
canned Wellness Turkey, Wellness Chicken and Herring and Precise Chicken,
Precise Turkey quite well.  My vet is worried about Omar's kidney function
too, since he's been drinking a whole lot more since the past few months
(did Basho do this too?).  We ran bloodwork twice and he does not have
diabetes.  His white blood cell count is 19,000 and he's been on amoxicillin
since last week; the second test did show his creatinine went down from 2.5
to 2.1. So far, Omar's weight is still stable at 12.3 lb. so at least he's
not losing. Anyway, many purrs for Basho -- I've been reading up on kidney
disease in cats again and found these sites which you might find useful:
http://www.nhahonline.com/f_urinary_tract.htm (note the food part -- if he
won't eat the food the vet gives you it is important mainly that he does eat
(none of my older cats that had kidney disease would touch any of the CD or
KD stuff).

Did your TED want him to eat a special diet for the IBD? Or just treat
it with medication? Because, like I expected, Basho *hates* the special
food. I brought home 4 different canned flavors: rabbit, venison, duck
and lamb, all with peas. He didn't touch the rabbit or venison. Ate some
duck last night, but won't eat it this morning. He's eating lamb now,
but I'm afraid it will be the same thing tonight. And he is *very*
stubborn. He woke up very hungry (no kibble overnight) and we put him in
the bathroom with a bowl of duck food. He meowed for an hour or so,
until we left him out and tried the lamb. :(

My vet doesn't seem concerned about his kidneys, which makes me very happy.

I'm assuming his blood cell results were normal, since the only thing we
talked about was the liver enzime and electrolites being abnormal.

Thanks for the info. I've been doing some research online and I'm going

My vet suggested trying the special diet, too--I tried two of the cans
(venison and lamb); it was a dud.  Good luck on the raw diet idea -- let me
know if it works for you.  There is a yahoo group for Feline IBD, I believe,
too.

that's a good thing in a cat. Or two-leg, for that matter.

Purrs to Basho coming from our three, Victor.  Ted, who has spent a
lot of time at v*t offices (avoiding acronym usage to avoid confusion
with cat's name), has special sympathy for young Basho.  Spock, who
fancies himself as part Oriental, declares that handsome cats like
Basho can overcome any obstacle with aplomb.

Hi Victor,
Last year my 6 year old cat was hospitalised with a severe intestinal
condition.  She was also pregnant and lost the kitties.  She did not pick up
well,  and a biopsy showed IBD.   She was  fed on Hills sensitive dry food
for some time,  and eventually was able to go on a normal diet.
She is now well and quite plump,  and will not be mated again. Soon to be
spayed.  She is an Oriental.    Marie from OZ

Thank you for sharing that Marie, it gives me lots of hope. We have not
been able to get Basho to eat the special food. I've also tried a
meat-only food from Wysong and he won't eat that either. I've ordered
supplies online to start making my own raw meat-only food, but in the
meantime, Basho can eat whatever he wants. He hasn't thrown up since
before we went to TED the first time. We'll move all the cats to the raw
diet and hopefully they'll all eat it. :)

It's so much easier if you can give all the cats the same food. Good
luck with the new diet, and can you post some recipes? Sounds interesting.

I found a very complete website http://www.catnutrition.org/ It has a
lot of good information, including the following recipe (the website has
step-by-step instructions with pictures!):

Raw Cat Food Diet Recipe Made WITH Real Bones

•2 kg [4.4 lb] raw muscle meat with bones (i.e., chicken thighs and
drumsticksŠor, even better, a whole carcass of rabbit or chicken
amounting to 2 kg.; if you don™t use a whole carcass, opt for DARK
meats like thighs/drumsticks)
•400 grams [14 oz.] of raw heart, ideally from same animal (if no heart
is available, substitute with 4000 mg. Taurine*)
•200 grams [7 oz] raw, ground liver, ideally from same animal. If you
can™t find the appropriate liver, you can substitute 40,000 IU of
Vitamin A and 1600 IU of Vitamin DŠbut try to use real liver instead of
substitutes
•16 oz. [2 cups] water
•4 raw egg yolks (use eggs from free-range chickens if you can)
•4000 mg. salmon oil (see Note at bottom of recipe**)
•4 capsules raw glandular supplement (for example, ixRaw Multiple
Glandularls from Premier Labs)
•800 IU Vitamin E (itdry Elt works very nicely)
•200 mg. Vitamin B complex
•OPTIONAL: 4 tsp. psyllium husk powder (or 8 tsp. if using whole
psyllium husks. see Note at bottom of recipe ***)
•OPTIONAL: ¼ teaspoon of kelp and ½ tsp dulse (if you™re using very high
quality free-range meats, there is no need to add kelp and dulse in this
recipe)
*NOTE: If you will not be using the food immediately and freezing for
more than a week or two, toss in an extra 4000 mg. of additional Taurine
to make up for what may get lost during storage. It is also not a bad
idea to sprinkle extra Taurine from a capsule on the food as you™re
serving it two or three times a week, just to be certain your cat is
getting plenty of this critical amino acid.
