I had a half-hour technical interview over the phone today.  Generally
speaking, this is the part I fear the most.  In the past, I've drawn
total blanks, even on stuff that I've worked with for years.

Well, the HR person told me that I would not be expected to know
everything; this was more of a feel-out.  The interviewer also told me
that he would only ask as many questions as he needed to get an idea
of the depth of my knowledge, then move on.

The general subjects were Java, C++, threading, databases, and
websites.  I feel like I really knocked the ball out of the park.
Yes, here and there I couldn't answer a question, but I could readily
answer the vast majority of the questions.  I never got that nasty
feeling in the pit of my stomach.  I came out of the interview feeling
like I'd done a great job, which I'm hoping is how they felt, too.

Anyway, whether or not I get an offer (actually, I think there are more
steps to the interview process, anyway), it's nice to know that I can
handle myself in a technical interview.  This will serve me well in
future interviews, because I won't be as nervous next time around.

That's great to hear.  The last thing you need is to be worrying about
the interview instead of staying focused so they can see how
accomplished you are.  Good luck.

This is great news. A telephone interview, in my mind, is
intimidating. This shows you know your stuff very well indeed. Kudos.

Thanks, although I think phone interviews are actually easier for me.
I feel more like I'm having a conversation and less like I'm being
grilled.

Well, one thing about the phone is you can scratch your butt or wear a
mumu and lounge on the sofa! LOL!!

That sparks a thought ... I think I like it because I pace while on
the phone.  Completely without intent, I find myself pacing the house,
which probably burns off nervous energy and allows me to sound a
little more collected.

Oh, I do the exact same thing! I thought I was the only phone-pacer
around...if I am talking to friends or family I have to multi-task - I
often will do the dishes, cook, or scrub floor, or something else I can
do and still keep an eye on DS.

I often fold laundry or something, but ambient noises are distracting,
so I can't really clean the house or anything.  Pacing, though --
that's a constant for me.  I got it from my mom; she always paces when
she's on the phone.
