Last week, Buster was on the empty bed, practicing his bed mice
killing moves.
Little Feet, sensing a chance to play, jumped up on the bed. Buster
took a few steps back, and lowered his eyes, thinking Little Feet was
going to attack.
Well, Little Feet goes into the whole upside-downy head, roll over and
purr, and all the other little actions that say to another cat, "Hey,
let's play!"
When Little Feet reaches over and makes a play slap at Buster, Buster
flees in terror. Little Feet looks up with interest, because he and
Dulce Mae often play chase. When Little Feet does start the chase,
Buster has run up onto a low shelf on the coffee table, hiding from
ittle Feet.
Later, I see Dulce Mae by the laundry room door, patting at a length
of yarn that was cut just for the cats to play with. So I sit down and
dangle the string for her.
Buster sees that I now have a lap, andstarts running towards me (he is
such a sweet lap fungus). He gets a brief glimpse of *another cat*
just behind me, and stops in his tracks. When he verifies that it's
Dulce, he sort saunters over in an "I meant to slow don like that"
way. Can't go being uncool around the girl cat, now, can we?
So I now have Dulce Mae on one end, and Buster on the other end of the
string. Little Feet comes over to play with the middle of the string.
This goes on well until Little Feet makes a sudden pounce on the
string near Buster. Buster immediately turns tail, and runs into the
living room again.
Now, I know that Little Feet doesn't try to terrorize Buster, but
there used to be a big, fluffy orange cat around here, with layers of
facial scars. I think that Buster was sufficiently terrorized by
*that* orange cat, that he doesn't trust other orange cats.
Poor Buster...
Hugs and Purrs,
Mark

It's hard to lose those self-preservation instincts -- Tucker (our orange
fomer feral guy) also spooks easily.
