Purrs for Nathan please?

wafflycat - 19 May 2005 16:33 GMT He's exhausted, aching all over and got a migraine.
At the weekend we were in France & he did the 500km Tour of Normandy. He was the youngest rider (at youngest age allowed to attempt it), rode with some other Brits, a lot of French & Belgian riders. Not a race - well, it might as well have been, as run like one! At one point on the Sunday, a certain English teenager was in full CSC kit leading the peloton home, with dreams of being in a stage of the Tour de France, I think ;-)
The French riders and French organisers were amazing - really encouraging Nathan on, and encouraging him up some *very steep* and long hills - and in torrential rain.
He did it, was given a trophy, and was on an incredible high.
The physical and mental effort required to do that when many an adult dropped out has hit home today.
May he have some resting, invigorating & restorative purrs, please?
Cheers, and thanks, helen s

And migraines are no fun. We have them in my family, to the point where I was reading an old diary of my grandmothers, and I don't know if they ever saw the pattern. But Grandpa was a preacher. And regularly had bad headaches the day after he gave a sermon.
Make sure he is getting properly rehydrated. And if his hands are cold, warming them can ease a migraine.

Vernon & I both get them, and it looks as if it's been passed to Nathan :-( Thankfully he's not getting them often.

Charleen Welton - 19 May 2005 17:52 GMT Many congratulations for Nathan, what an awesome accomplishment!!!! Commiserations to Nathan for his migraine may it go away quickly. Charleen
wafflycat - 19 May 2005 18:03 GMT > Many congratulations for Nathan, what an awesome accomplishment!!!! > Commiserations to Nathan for his migraine > may it go away quickly. > Charleen Thanks, Charleen. Much appreciated. Nathan's cycling mentor has won the Race Across America a couple of times & came third last year (RAAM is non-stop from west coast to east coast USA - serious endurance cycling) and I think Nathan would like to be a good, fast endurance cyclist, as well as improving his time trialling times. So to do 500km over the weekend was Nathan's first endurance event - he did darned well for a 16-year old, even if I am somewhat biased ;-)

CatNipped - 19 May 2005 19:19 GMT > He's exhausted, aching all over and got a migraine. > [quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > > Cheers, and thanks, helen s Wow! Makes my puny attempts at 10 times 'round the block seem pale indeed! ;>
Congratulations to Nathan and healing purrs are heading across the pond to hopefully soothe his aches and migraine. If the migraine persists, have him try soaking his feet in water as cold as he can stand (this helps "pull" some of the excess blood from the head and will ease the pressure).
Hugs,

wafflycat - 19 May 2005 19:20 GMT > Wow! Makes my puny attempts at 10 times 'round the block seem pale > indeed! ;> Ta muchly - he outdid me - I lasted the first morning. I was reduced to being like a wrinkled prune due to the non-stop rain and my hamstring was about to pop due to cold & wet, so I ditched. I am a wimp ;-)

I'd say he certainly deserves them. I've ridden centuries (100 miles, not km) and they really beat the hell out of me. I can't imagine riding 500km in a weekend. My congratulations! Lots of purrs for him to get back to normal ASAP.

I can't imagine [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > Regards and Purrs, > O J Thanks :-) A century is about my limit. Nathan did equivalent to 120 miles day 1, 120 miles day 2 & 60 on day 2.5
On the plus side for him, he didn't have to carry anything as the event was fully supported - in the case of our riders, Vernon & I in following team car - me as chief first aider & puncture-patch-applier and Vernon as chief mechanic, who kept the bikes on the road, including swapping rear mechs around as one guy broke his when he went over after getting caught in a wet train line on a level crossing.
Also on the plus side, Vernon bought a Look carbon road frame last summer, intending to build *himself* up a nice light road bike. I bought him some nice wheels with bladed spokes for his Christmas present. Said Look bike was completed three days before going to France. Guess who has never ridden *his* bike and guess who did ride it for the Tour of Normandy ;-) Guess who will be riding it in future... and it's a lovely bike.

Ta muchly :-) Nathan's migraines are a new development :-( So far he doesn't get them often. I think this one was due to sheer fatigue & coming down from the high of completing the cycling.
