jmcquown - 17 May 2005 22:10 GMT How did the interview yesterday go? Did you come away with positive feelings or no?

Dan and Nancy Mahoney - 18 May 2005 01:03 GMT > How did the interview yesterday go? Did you come away with positive > feelings or no? > > Jill (purrs still heading that way) That's difficult to answer. It was very mixed. We did a lot of talking about past experience and generalities, and that went great. Then they had me speak with technical types who gave me real-life skills tests. Put me in front of a keyboard, describe a task they want done, and have me do it. Pretty simple stuff except for one thing - I get a nasty case of brain-fade when I'm situations like that. Stuff that I know and use every day just completely evaporates.
But I managed to work my way through. All of the major stuff they asked me to do I was eventually able to do.
I'm hoping that the ovreall impression I made was favorable. I think maybe so, since they have begun to call my references.

What has Nancy heard from the newspaper? > Charleen > Mr. Pumpkin, > Aggie Marble, > Victor Velcro It's driving her crazy! It's now 3, maybe 4 weeks since the interview? And she's heard nothing. On the positive side, though, she overheard her boss in a phone call yesterday (hard to avoid, since everybody sits really close together and even the boss is only 15 or 20 feet away) in which it sounded like he was being told that he was losing one of his employees to the parent newspaper. From what Nancy overheard, it sounds like her boss has been informed that Nancy is going to be hired by the big paper. But nobody has contacted her yet.

Dan and Nancy Mahoney - 18 May 2005 04:59 GMT > If it's been that long, couldn't she politely follow up with the > person who contacted her about the job? This guy is notoriously hard to get hold of my phone. Nancy has e-mailed the guy two or three times but not received an answer.
Today was Nancy's day off (she gets Sundays and Tuesdays off). We're hoping that she'll get the offer tomorrow. Actually, tomorrow's a busy day. Nancy is hoping to get her job offer, I go to see the surgeon about my hernia tomorrow afternoon, and since we've heard nothing from the other guy's insurance company and it's been a week since we got rear-ended, I've set tomorrow at noon as the deadline for hearing from his insurance company before I complain to the state insurance commission.

They certainly wouldn't bother unless they were pretty interested. That should at least lead to a higher up interview and would put them into the position to make an offer.

I went to an interview on Friday for a PHP job. They asked me to write out a simple HTML form on the whiteboard; I kind of stared at them. It's actually been a year since I wrote my last serious PHP thing, and longer since I've touched HTML. I said, "Uh, I wrote my own libraries to do this in PHP so that I never have to type a bracket again." Don't think that impressed them ... I did eventually stumble through it, though. If I just played with the language for a day or two, I'd be on the ball ... but I hadn't. The suddenness of the interview took me by surprise.

This interview was for a Linux admin/PHP programmer position, and I've been driving a truck for the last 15 months. I think I spent a total of 3 hours working with PHP to teach myself the language before the interview, but it's so similar to Perl (which I've done for the last 8 years or so) I think I'm in ok shape.
What was something of a hinderance was the keyboard. When I'd press " I'd get @; to get " I had to press shift-2. The pipe character (|) couldn't be rendered from the keyboard at all. Neither could the backslash. Made things a bit difficult.

Honestly, I don't think it would have occured to me to bone up on HTML. Not the basic syntax. The last thing I did in PHP was to write a plugin to my blog that chooses a random quote from a file and prints it. Sure, there's a <p> here and a <br> there, but ...

I understand what you're saying, and hope you get a job soon. I was laid off in 2003 - after a few months the same company hired me back. In the three months that I was unemployed I realized how rusty my job skills are in some areas, and how out of date they are in others. Since then I have been trying to freshen up some of the areas. I have been re-reading my programming language books, and subscribed to the programming languages newsgroups in question. I try out programming questions or examples that are posted in the newsgroups to help keep up with things. Maybe you can use this to keep things fresh? Good luck in any case.

Yes, you know it. But it's difficult in a "test" environment.
Still, we found the tests (not keyboard, rather think about it and write down your answers type tests) useful. We had a LOT of people at my former employer internally who would apply for a position simply because of the pay grade, not because they were in any way qualified. If they couldn't answer a few simple technical questions (and trust me, these were SIMPLE questions) we pretty much tossed them out of the running. I remember hearing one woman say to someone after she was informed she didn't get the job "Oh, they don't really have to do all that stuff." Really? ps -ef grep [this] woman! All she could do was read and answer email! And you couldn't understand her email, either.
They will know you know your stuff. Purrs!

Have the newspaper people made up their minds yet as to which wonderful position they are going to offer Nancy?

Dan and Nancy Mahoney - 26 May 2005 07:17 GMT Since my interview was in the evening, Nancy rode to Orange County with me so we could go out to dinner after my interview. On the way down she called the corporate Web guy in Woodland Hills. She has the job! She's now the web content manager for the San Bernardino Sun newspaper. It will be a week or two before she can take over that job full-time, but she starts attending content meetings this week.
My interview went pretty well. I was able to ask the questions they asked, and I didn't experience my usual brain-fade. They told me that they received 50 resumes, invited 10 people in for interviews, then brought 4 of us back for 2nd interviews. They will be making their final decision in the next few days. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed about this one!
Of course, the telecommute position with the folks in Tempe, AZ would also be pretty sweet...
Sandy - 26 May 2005 07:28 GMT Good luck, Dan, and Congratulations to Nancy! Will you give us the paper's web address so we can see what Nancy comes up with?

No, the cat-related job didn't call me back for a 2nd interview. This job is with an outfit down in Orange County (it'll be a bear of a commute), but it's foing the write kind of work - system admin of Linux boxes with some PHP development, and just a little bot of work with Windows servers and maybe occasionally writing of repairing an ASP application.
