Protest squeak

The posts about cats chattering made me wonder if anyone else has
heard their cats make protest squeaks.

Betty can make a really high-pitched "mreeeek" type squeak.  It's a
bit hard to describe, but it sounds like a cross between a lady
squealing at the sight of a mouse, and a rusty door hinge.

She doesn't make this sound very often, but the type of situations in
which Betty does make it is very consistent.  She makes this
particular sound when she's being restrained from something she really
wants.

For example, I carry her to the screen door to show her the birds
outside.  Mreeeeeek!  Or it's morning, and I've been half-asleep
kissing and mauling Betty for 20 minutes straight.  Mreeeeek!

The squeak of protest is usually not accompanied by a physical
struggle.  The vocalization is enough to communicate what she wants.

The funniest time Betty did this squeak was after I was away from home
for two days.  After the first and second days of my not coming home,
Betty must have given up on me.  When I got home, Betty was not there
to greet me at the door.  I went to the bedroom, where I found a bed
lump.

"Betty?" I asked the sleeping lump.  The lump started struggling
desperately at the covers trying to get to the source of that voice as
quickly as possible.  "Mreeeeeek!!"

I've got a Holstein-patterned cat who sounds like he's saying
Nooooooooooooooo! when you want to pick him up from a reclining position
and move him somewhere.  It really does sound like he's trying to say
Nooooooo.  It's a bit comedic, but it's probably from just not enjoying
being lifted up.

I wonder if many cats don't like getting picked up?  When I got Betty,
I was prepared to have a cat that didn't like being held (you never
know), but she doesn't seem to mind.  Sometimes, she'll want to be put
down, which she indicates by hanging her head off the side of your
arm.  Other times, she'll beg to be held.

As in everything else, cats vary.  ;)  I think in general they don't
like being swept off their feet by a big ol hoomin when they're not
expecting it-- would you?    Then after that, it really varies.  My
tiny Mimi loathed being held because she hated feeling restrained.
Then in her older years, she seemed to change her mind, and enjoyed
being carried around like a baby.

Awhile after I got Stinky, he would plant himself in front of me and
meow.  I couldn't figure out what he wanted-- his litter box, food
dish, and water dish all checked out OK.  When he started going back a
bit on his hind legs, I leaned over, and when I did that, he climbed
into my arms.  He wanted face-to-face cuddles.  I was just blown away
by that.

That is so sweet.  It would just melt my heart.

Sometimes when I pick Pearl up I get "the squeak". I only had one other cat
who did this, but they never did it without being picked up. How adorable.

Yes, Vino does this practically every time I pick him up.  Once he's
up, he enjoys being held, but it's the initial lifting that he
protests.  It almost sounds like he's a squeaky toy and I'm squeezing
the air out of his stomach when I pick him up.  Very cute :-)

Yep, that's when I get the squeak from Persia, too.  Except of course, when
she *wants* me to pick her up (to carry her out to her Kitty Walk).

Mischief does the "squeak:" too when she gets picked up.  I find it
kinda cute.

Harri has a special "awww, Paw!" squeak she issues when I don't let her
explore some really fun place when we're walking (like an animal hole
big enough to be hiding a badger).

And Ranger has an extremely cute "squeeeeeeeeeeak" she does when I wake
her up while she's sleeping in my arms.

You should hear my Sabine when she's gotten hold of a bit of cheese o
something, and either one of my other kitties or myself want to take i
away from her (I only do that when it's the big block where I cuts bit
from she's taken :)). She looks like a real angry devil; eyes narrowed
ears flattened, mouth wide open to show all teeth, and an incredibl
loud and raw: "Neeeyaaaawwrrr!". It's quite obvious she doesn't lik
anybody intervering with her eating cheese

If I pass by the refrigerator at meal time and don't open it up for her chilled
Science Diet, I get a protest squeak. Actually we have a conversation. She
protests and I remind her that she is getting fat. It's too cute. Especially if
I have to leave and she turns her head to the side and then utters a protest
squeak. Could not believe that. So I say, I have to leave, and she protests
again, too cute!

I think this is Oscar's main form of communication!  Sometimes it
means, "I don't really want you to pick me up, but I won't claw your
eyeballs out ... yet."  Sometimes it means, "I need you to come here
and be with me RIGHT NOW!"  And sometimes it has food-related
meanings.
