and smells, well, like a clean damp cat.  He is busily licking himself
to replace the coating of cat spit that was so rudely removed.  The
other two are circling him warily until they can verify his identity.

I survived the dentist :D

I do! I do!  Okay, that sounded weird, even to me.  No really, my dentist
is the most lovely man, and his whole office staff are a real pleasure
to visit. He's very careful about hurting me (and I'm VERY sensitive),
and he's always going away to conferences and seminars and always has
some new toy to play with whenever I go for a visit.  He's very
careful to be as pain-free as possible, and even explains what he
is doing while he's working, which was a big thing for me. I feel
less anxious when I know what's going on. For my first visit, he
even used a little camera that went to a tv screen over his shoulder,
and showed me EXACTLY what the problems were. VERY cool.

My insurance has never covered his bill completely, but I'm happy
to pay the difference (which isn't much - maybe $35 for a cleaning).
His office is such a great place!  If you're ever around Hunt Valley,
MD, I can highly recommend him.  His wife decorated his office, and
even the waiting room is lovely and calm, with a little fountain
and soft music.

I like the dentist too.  Any dentist actually.  I've never had a bad
dental experience so I don't mind going.  And my teeth always feel so
much better afterwards :-)

When I was a child, I had a dentist who liked to torture children.  He
always told parents that children didn't need novocain or any other
pain-killer.  I walked to all of my appointments, so my mother was
never in the waiting room.  He would grab you around the head and
start in with his drill.  He'd get angry if you complained or whined.

My mother thought I must have been telling stories, but some years
later, she and some of the other mothers in the neighborhood were at a
kaffee-klatch and the subject of dentists came up.  They found out
that all the children who used him had similar stories to tell.  At
the time though, none of the children were believed.  I doubt that
this would happen as often today, thank goodness.

That is so strange how people never used to believe their kids.  Why
would a kid make something like that up!  Sheesh!
I like the dentists here in Thailand.  They are very gentle and for
cleaning they all have ultrasonic and there's hardly any scraping.
For fillings they use the white stuff so it doesn't look like you have
any fillings and if it's not going to have to be drilled very deep,
they give you the option of not having a shot.  I much, much prefer a
twinge of pain during the drilling than the shot in the gums and the
numb, drooling mess you are afterwards.

I also had dentist problems as a teenager.  I have a relatively small
jaw, and the dentist my parents sent me to for several years insisted
on using a device like a scaled-down car jack to force my jaw farther
open.  He came close to dislocating my jaw each time, and my jaw
hinges would ache for a week after visiting him.  After three years or
so of complaining, my parents finally believed me and sent me to a
different dentist.  My parents weren't generally bad about believing
me, but, for some reason, they didn't take my complaints about the
dentist seriously.

Older dentistry was often simply painful. I hated it with passion, but I
don't think the dentists involved were unduly cruel, and in many cases,
especially when I was very young, my parents were present. My present
dentist, who uses modern techniques, has commented on the 'solid,
old-fashioned dentistry' that produced such long-lived fillings.
Unfortunately, one has finally given up the ghost.

One of these dentists is still alive, and retired to my present hometown.
It seems he's also an amateur artist and recently put on a show of his
paintings. I though about going, for about 2 seconds!

I have a suggestion for improving the office decor a tad. Just about
everyplace would be improved by adding a cat. And I just happen to
have this very sweet stray white momma cat with black spots who needs
a home....
