Is there a way to tell how old a cat is?

We have two great cats, both originally strays, so we have no idea how
old they are. We asked our vet when we had them *fixed* etc. and she
says it is rather difficult to tell... does anybody have any bright
ideas that would help us get at least a rough idea?

We have had Sox a few months longer than Shoes. Sox looked very much
fully grown when decided to move in, and he hasn't got *bigger*. He is a
bit fatter though! Shoes, on the other hand was quite smallish when he
arrived, and was still a bit playful. However, he is now the *big boy*
in the family, he has grown lengthwise and is getting quite chubby too. :)

Thanks

Vets usually can give a decent estimate by looking at the condition of the
cat's teeth.  Mine guessed Persia was 2-3 years old when she came to live
with me.

Hmmm. She did have a quick look, but she didn't seem to want to commit
to anything... I will have to ask again when they go back for their
next visit. Luckily, that's not too often. The are both healthy, so
that doesn't happen too often... Sox was soooo funny today. My little
girlie dropped her ginger buscuit on the floor and he went for it and
actually ate some!! You would think he hadn't been fed since he was
kitten... yeah right! The are both fed three times a day with both wet
and dry cat food.... of only ONE brand. I actually asked advice earlier
on this, as we were having difficulty getting the stuff they like, but
luckily it seems to have come back into the supermarkets again... what
a problem it can be. When they first arrived, they would eat any brand
we gave them, but now.... Only Purina Friskie's Pouches are good enuff
for our lot!!! Cats are cats no matter where they come from. They all
have royal blood! :) Glad they picked us to own, though..
Cheers

Nope, they can't really "commit" but it's a fairly good guestimate based on
wear, tartar (I guess), etc.

Persia goes after snack crackers if I drop one.  She likes the cheese ones!

Persia has to eat prescription food (read: expensive) due to bladder stone
surgery last year.  Luckily she loves the stuff.  I don't know what I'd do
if she turned her nose up at it; they only make a few kinds for her
particular needs.

My two are Princess Buttercup (aka Princess Fluffybutt) and Emperor
Ming (Ming the Merciless, or Mr. Ming when he's incognito)...  Royalty
is right, and they remind me of my lowly status with great regularity.

when I lived in maroubra, there was a cat that seemed to have been
abandoned,it was always outside a partly demolished butchers shop, also
a couple of houses had been partly demolished, my son and I, the son I lost
when he was 19, started taking food down with us to feed it, in the end
Stephen said 'why dont we just take it home Mam, so we did, we thought that
although it was a good weight, the poor thing didn't look too good
so took puss to the Vet he said it wasn't *really* sick but it was pretty
old
about 14 or 15 and was probably just running down, we kept Puss as long as
he was comfortable, but eventually we had to let him go to the Bridge, when
the vet said he was ready. Steve and I decided that maybe he had found his
way home to where he'd alway's lived, and couldn't find his way back to the
new home, as we could not imagine anyone deserting a cat that they had
nurtured for so long, I hope they didn't anyway, I think
the vet estimated  her age by the teeth as he was examining them at
the time he mentioned the age     Jean.P.

I really don't think there is an accurate way to tell. Before I
adopted Rocky I took him to TED for an abcess to be treated. Four
years later, another TED saw him and made a guess as to his age. He'd
aged two years in those four years ;-) Couse the first TED saw him
when he was still feral, and by the time the second one saw him he was
tamed and had a more reliable source of food and shelter.
