When I got up this morning (acutally about noon) I looked around and
didn't see the kits. Laid down in front of the dishwasher, and sure
enough found all four the the bitties there. I had hoped they'd be
out of the kitchen so I could kitten proof it, but no such luck. I put
down some food where they could see it then went and stood on the
other side of the counter where they couldn't see me, but they didn't
come out. Spot decided to lend a hand, so she went over and called
them out, and of course they came right out and proceeded to eat. Now
the problem was how to keep them from ducking back into their hidey
hole when they saw me. There is no way to get on the far side of the
DW and herd them out of the room, since it's on the far side of the
room opposite the entrance.
Sure enough, as soon as they saw me trying to sneak over the counter
to get between them and the DW, they dashed back under it. It didn't
help that the DW is built in under the counter. Spot decided she'd
shown me how it was done once, and just sat back and watch the pitiful
hoomin attempts. I put a carrier down next to the DW so that they
would have an escape route, and laid down in front of it to try to
convice them it wasn't such a good hideout. A can of compressed air
conviced two to dash out the far side. Of course they didn't go in the
carrier, just dashed around it and around the silly hoomin laying on
the floor into the living room - where there's even more places to
hide. Spot must have thought this was great fun, she came coser to
watch, but since she had already shown the hoomin how it was SUPPOSED
to be done she didn't offer any help - except to maybe cheer the
bitties on.
The compressed air was working, but I ran out of air after getting two
kits out. Time for the ultimate kitty handler tool, the ever useful
squirt bottle. Quickly, a third bittie edged toward the far side next
to the carrier, and a short squirt convinced him to follow his
brothers into the living room. Only Cali, the only little girl, was
still hiding out. At first I didn't see her, she was luckier, or
perhaps smarter, than her brothers. She was hiding behind the
insulation between the DW and the cabinet. I pulled out a dowel rod
and lifted the insulation, gave her a couple squirts, and she took
off. Unlike her brothers, she decided to go straight into the carrier,
so I closed the door. Spot decided the fun was over, and decided to
take a nap.
I blocked off the kitchen so no one would sneak back in and get under
the DW. Then made sure no one had done an end around and come back
into the kitchen until I had the hole plugged. Yep, I located all
three boy bitties, Cali was locked in the carrier, so it was time to
block off their hideout. Once that was done I closed the gate to the
kitchen, reached over and opened the carrier to let Cali out, and put
Spot inside to help calm them down once I'd relocated them. The boys
must have been tuckered out (or maybe it's just that I have a better
idea of where to look after searching for an hour and a half
yesterday) as the relocation when quickly. Also helped that Cali had
put herself out of the game, since she was the hardest to find
yesterday.
They're all napping in the the kitchen for now. Hopefully the rolled
up towel crammed into the hole will be enough to block off the DW.
Unfortunately, they're almost at the age Sammy was when she started
climbing over my improvised gate. Monday they're going back to see Dr
Haney, and if he decides they're old enough he may be taking two of
the boys home with him. Haven't heard anything back from the
neighbor's friend who expressed interest in taking one home. If it
were me and I was looking for a kitten, I'd want to come over and ooh
and aah over the bitties, even if told it would be another week before
they'd be ready to leave momma. Course, I don't know her schedule, she
could be working or something, and with me working nights may just be
having trouble getting here. (I told the neighbor the best time would
be between 2 and 3:30PM.)

I would've loved to be a fly on the wall for this one, Steve! Glad you were
able to get them out!

Sounds like you make a good bitty-wrangler. Lots of purrs that they
all find wonderful homes.

For a minute, I thought that the DW was as in the complement of a DH.
We also have a little cat-sized hole near the base of the dishwasher.
I found out about when I was vacuuming, and Betty somehow managed to
get into the walls. I've since blocked it off.
Betty hates carriers, but it's very easy to get her into one. When I
get the carrier out, Betty will cry and run off at first, but will
soon start following me around and headbutting my ankle, to try to
convince me that she shouldn't be put inside. Then, I can just pick
her up and put her in the carrier. :)
