OK, I got a case of happy finger and sent this off incomplete. So just
ignore that first post.
After having to reschedule Sammy's urinalysis recheck a couple times,
we finally got it done today. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the
clinic, the vet had left for the day. So, I'll be going back for an
explanation of the results Monday afternoon. He discontinued the
Amoxacillin, though, so I'm assuming the infection has been whipped.
While I was there I asked Dr Haney about Spot and her kits. He told me
he wanted a couple kittens himself. He wants two males, which is no
problem since it appears there's three boys and one girl. Also told
that me that I could bring her and the babies with me when I came back
to pick up Sammy and another vet would give them their initial
checkup.
We had a storm blow through last night, which dumpd over an inch of
rain on us. So I was out in the rain getting soaked, rounding up
kittens and bringing them inside. We had another one tonight, but this
time they're already safely inside. I guess for the next week LB and
Sammy will be locked in one room while Spot and the babies are in the
other. I have mentioned before what a pain it is to live in a small
one bedroom, two room apartment, with two resident cats and a
protective momma cat that they hate.
Spot and her babies were checked over this afternoon. It turned out to
be quite a job catching them, even though they were confined to the
living room. I started to round them up about 2 and it was 3:30 before
everyone was in the carrier. I have two carriers, but of course I'd
left one at TED with Sammy. Probably just as well, since they all fit
into one carrier with no problem and they were able to keep each other
company on the trip. Besides, I needed the second carrier to bring Sam
home.
They all appear to be in good condition for living outside. Spot's
shoulder wound appears to be healing, no fever or anything indicating
inffection, so I just have to watch for signs of abcess and hopefully
it'll heal up on it's own. The vet sexed the kittens, like I said
above three boys and one girl. Two of the babies show signs of
respiratory infection - not surprising - the vet said they all
probably have it. She said they'd probably get over it without
treatment, but that they'd get well quicker with some antibiotics. So
I now have two wild little kits to try to give amoxicillin twice a
day. Course they all need speutering, deworming, vaccinations, etc,
but I'll probably take them to the nonprofit clinic for that.
Medicating the two kits was a bust for tonight. They're all hiding
behind the dishwasher. I really don't want to move it with them under
there and risk smashing anyone. I had forgotten that I had to block
off a small hole by the dishwasher that Sammy and her siblings also
found when they were this age. Once they're out I'll block off the
hole and put up a temporary gate which will keep them in the kitchen
until they're big enough to jump up on the island counter and make it
into the living room (which of course has all kinds of hiding places
under furniture, behind the entertainment center, etc. For now, I've
unplugged the dishwasher and taken off the toekick access panel,
hoping they'll decide it's not such a good hiding place. I've got the
temporary gate in place, but left it open for tonight so that they'll
hopefully come out of the kitchen during the night. The litterbox and
food are all in place in the kitchen, so hopefully I can just wait
until they're all back in the kitchen and just close the gate (after
blocking the dishwasher off, of course).
I need to try to remember all the hiding places LB's kits used and
kitten proof the apartment when I get up in the morning.

I agree! Not many people would go to all this trouble, bringing them in out
of a storm, chasing them around (imagine if your apartment was bigger!).
Kudos, Steve!

Wow, Steve, you've got your work cut out for you but my hat is off to you
for what you are doing! How wonderful that the vet might be able to take
two of the babies! Purrs for your success!
cheering you on,
Christine
