There is nothing quite like the sense of entitlement in a cat or kitten that
was born to healthy parents in a good home and that acquires a devoted slave
as soon as she is done with her mother.  Her universe truly does revolve
around her.

Oh yes, Entitlement. That's the word I was looking for. You're right.
Not only was Mere born into a good home, my niece hand-fed the kittens
from day one, so they got used to being close to hoomins all the time.

I love that, too, the sense that the cat feels entitled to *your*
body, and to treat it like furniture. ;)  I love it that Stinky likes
to camp out on my chest for a meatloafing session-- and that he
relaxes, and stretches out more and more until he goes rolling off. ;)
That trust is so wonderful.  It's all the more wonderful, really, when
you see it in a cat who was brought in from not such a nice life, and
you see them lose their fear and discomfort, and begin to treat you
like-- furniture. ;)

What embodies that trust to me is scritching them under their chin and
they raise their neck higher and higher to get as much as possible.  No
animal exposes themselves that way unless they've really accepted you.

Or when Scouty lies on her back with all four paws up in the air and
said 'PET MY TUMMY MEOWMIE!' I can't pick her up without a struggle,
but she'll let me scritch her and purr blissfully until she's had
enough (when she turns around and bites me! It's her way of saying
'enough now!' lol)

Last night, Felix (who, incidentally, is celebrating his tenth
adoption anniversary today) insisted that he HAD to sleep on my
pillow. Trust me, there is *barely* enough room for both his large
furry body and my normal-size head on a standard-size pillow. ;-)

I dont talk much about my fostering days, but actually what Teresa
wrote about " bringing them in from a not very nice life" reminded me
a lot of the kids, who's personalities could change dramatically in a
very short time when shown a little love and kindness   Jean.P.

of tongue pictures.

I thought about that picture when I saw what I'd captured (remember, I
was shooting Mere in my lap, so couldn't see what I was photographing).

Yes, also your pic was "live" whereas I staged my pic by putting
peanut butter on the tip of Vino's nose :-)

Poor Persia! I'm glad you let her take refuge in her closet from the
badnasty thunder....my dear RB DurDur used to hide in the clothes dryer vent
tubing (he was also fearful of the frequent south FL lightning strikes just
ahead of the thunder there) and emerge a living dirtball (now you hear
people being called a "dirtball" but DurDur really was a cat-sized one) and
I'd have to give him a bath right away before he headed for the living room.

And as I usually say to pictures like this:  'Such a neglected cat!
How sad.  Obviously unloved and unwanted'
Then I break into hysterical laughter.  Just like my Rita, only I don't
have a lap for her, so she lays next to me and cleans up.
