Dan and Nancy Mahoney - 11 May 2005 05:33 GMT
I am *so* glad we didn't take any of the kitties with us today!

I recently developed one of the common rewards of driving a truck - a
hernia. The medical center where my doctor practices doesn't do Worker's
Comp cases, so we were referred to a local hospital emergency room.

I had Nancy drive me down there. There were no parking places in the
small parking lot adjacent to the emergency room so we pulled onto the
street, found another parking lot, put on the turn signal and slowed to
make the turn. Just as we were starting to turn, WHAM! A big pickup
slammed into the rear of our little tiny pickup, shoved it up over a
concrete island, and slammed Nancy and me around a bit. I'm glad we had
our seat belts on!

Nancy got beat up more than I did, so she was transported by ambulance
to the emergency room (a total trip of about 50 feet) and was checked
out. She has a concussion, and we are both going to be sore all over
tomorrow.

The other guy was insured, so I'm hoping we won't have too much trouble
getting our truck fixed or replaced.  Considering how badly it was torn
up, I'll be very surprised if the insurance adjuster doesn't declare it
a total loss.

The bottom line is that we're both ok. I had been considering taking
Harri or Ranger with us, and letting Nancy walk the kitty while I was in
the ER. I'm sure glad we didn't do that!

Oh, man, what a day!  I'm so sorry this happened.  I hope you both
feel better soon.

Apropos insurance ... obviously you'd rather never have been hit, but
there may be a silver lining.  I was rear-ended in slow motion a few
months ago.  No major damage, but my back hurt quite a bit for two
days before it felt better, and I went to the chiro the same day to
get an eval.  Anyway, I ended up getting not only reimbursed for the
chiro, but also paid several hundred dollars of -- I don't recall the
exact term, but basically it was pain and suffering.  Well, that is,
they extended the offer and I signed it; I haven't received the money
yet, but I'm assuming it's coming soon.

Again, obviously any right-thinking person would rather just not have
been injured in the first place, but maybe the ins. company will offer
you some extra money for your troubles.

Be very careful about accepting money to quickly from the insurance
company.......odds are very good that you are signing off on any
future problems with your head, back, neck, etc.......they are very
anxious to get you to release them from liablilities especially from
head and back type injuries......make sure the doctor gives you a
clean bill of health.....please be careful about accepting money
unless you know exactly what you are giving up for that money....

Glad you guys are OK

Oh, absolutely, those are all very good points.

Yes, in my case the payment very explicitly covered all potential
future problems relating to the accident, and I discussed the matter
with my own insurance agent.  But my chiro didn't seem concerned and
said that pain in the first two days was normal; after that point, it
went away.  They did a scan of my back and nothing appeared to be out
of sorts.

FWIW, my insurance agent also suggested holding off on settling,
unless I was very sure I knew the full extent of my injuries.  For
other reasons, though, there were about two months between when the
accident happened and when I signed the papers, and I hadn't had any
new problems in that time.

What a crummy day.  But big smiles for your it could have been worse
attitude.

Reminds me of an old family story.  Mom and Dad used to meet cousins in New
York once a year.  Go to a Broadway Show and dinner at a good restaurant.
Usually Mamma Leonie's.  On their first trip, they walked out of Union
Station and hailed a cab.  Gave the driver their destination.  He laughed.
Made a U-Turn and dropped them off across the street at the New Yorker
Hotel.

What horrible news!  I'm glad you're both superficially OK, even
thought the effects may not show up some time.  You're right, it's a
good thing you left the kitties home.  Purrs and healing vibes comin'
at you both.

Me too! But I'm very sorry for your getting rear-ended. I hope Nancy will
feel better soon, and that you will, too. And I'm sorry for the
inconvenience of the damage to your truck.  Thank goodness Harri and Ranger
were safe at home at the time!

Thank goodness you're all right, and thank goodness you didn't have any cats
in the car.  I hope both of you, and your pickup, recover soon.

I'm glad to hear there were no serious injuries, though concussions are
not trivial.

Good to hear, and I'm glad you're all okay and no kitties were hurt
(or even present).   Okay, I know you're all very nice people, but
Be Careful. Insurance companies are out to get Nice People.  Don't
sign anything until you are 100% sure that you will recover fully.
(I'm sure you will recover, but you never know).
Make sure you get everything that you deserve from the guy who hit
you. It's not 'greedy' to expect your medical bills to be covered
until you are 100% well again. It's only greedy when you make him
pay for the rest of his natural life because you have a twinge.
You know the difference.

Last time I was rear-ended, it cost the other guy $10,000. $6000 to
fix the car and $4000 to fix ME.  (I think they gave me $1500 for
pain and suffering, plus time off work, too. A day and a half.)

How awful!  I'm so glad to hear that you both are ok though,
and that the kitties stayed home this time.  Be sure to rest
for a few days and let yourselves heal.

Wow! What a close call. I am so thankful that neither of you is hurt but
I don't imagine that helped your hernia at all, either.  Purrs that you
both recover quickly and that your truck is taken care of by the
offending driver.
