It seems we have a house guest.  This little fellow followed my husband
home.  We gave him some food on the deck, like we do for all the strays, but
he stayed by the back door and cried and cried.  Then it started pouring
buckets here and he was huddled under the spa canopy but when he saw me
through the bedroom doors, he ran up to the door in the pouring rain and
jumped up to cry at me some more.  I caved.

As soon as I picked him up he started purring like a motorboat.  I've got
him sequestered in my office with a litter box and some food, and I gave him
a dose of Revolution for Kittens.  But we *CAN'T* keep him.  We really,
really can't.  I'm going to be taking another hit in salary and we're having
trouble feeding and vetting the four we already have.

I called the rescue group I donate to and left a message saying that I would
vet and neuter him - and maybe foster for a *little* while - and could they
please give me the name of the vet they use for discount speuters.

He looks to be about 2 1/2 or 3 months old (what do you think?).  He knows
what the litter box is for (as you can see in some of the pictures ;>).  I
have a sinking feeling that he was "dumped".

Anyway, he's crawling with fleas (and now so am I), but other than that he
looks healthy, his ears are clean, and his eyes are clear.  But he just
insists on sitting on my lap and purring at me.  HELP!

Oh dear. He's awfully adorable. I'm not going to be much help. Is it
*really* that more much expensive for one more? I always take it as a sign
that I'm *supposed* to be the one to take them in when they literally fall
in your lap. My he's cute.

And how.. Oh, he melts my heart. He looks just like Pan as a kitten! (Which
may be influencing me.) Hmmmmm..... Is there anyway you can put up notices
about him at the grocery store, on telephone poles at the laundromat,
passing word of mouth around the neighborhood? Does the local paper have any
lost and found pet adds that you can run?  Does your vet have a "lost pets"
photo gallery?

You may not be able to keep him, but there's got to be a way to find this
resourceful little soul a new forever home, or else reuinite him  with his
owners. If he's basically healthy, he may have got out by accident, and his
real owners may love him and  be frantic with worry about him, wanting him
back desperately. (I'm trying to think positively, here.) He does look to be
in relatively good condition, and not like he's been a feral kitty all his
life. It doesn't sound to me like he's afraid of humans, if he came running
up to you, like that. Just lost and hungry and looking for a port in the
storm.

I find it's not so much the feeding that's the huge cost, it's the vet bills
for the regular stuff such as preventative worm & flea stuff, the regular
vaccinations, the boarding fees if you ever need to use a facility, and then
there's the potential enormous costs of any *major* vet bill. When The Unfit
Family went to France last year, it cost almost as much to board the cats at
a reputable and caring cattery as it did to France & back. I don't begrudge
my three the cost, but it is a big chunk of budget and can't be ignored.
It's why I have no more than three felines as much as I'd adore to have more
:-)

What he's jam packed full of right now is fleas!  But... as expensive as the
stuff is, you got to give it its due - the Revolution has already killed
them.  I got out my trusty flea comb and a beer stein full of water and Dawn
liquid and started combing.  I now have a beer stein full of about 10,000
dead fleas.  Now I think I'll apply a dose to myself.

Speaking of which, does anybody know where I can get Revolution fairly
cheap?  I'm probably going to have to dose my four girls now too.  When I
bout it at my vet's office Sammy was still a kitten so I had to get enough
adult formula for Bandit, Demi, and Jessie, and kitten formula for Sammy and
it cost me $120.00!!!

This is why I use advantage.  Don't know if Revolution can be done the same
way.  All the sizes of advantage had the same % of active ingredient.  So I
bought the largest size available for Large dogs.  I open a tube and parcel
out a bit less than the recommended dose to mine, and then give the
remainder of the tube to my daughter for hers.  The vet approves of the
method and gave me a syringe to use to measure out the doses.  We use it on
the dogs as well as the cats.

We are lucky here.  Outside fleas are dormant both summer (too hot and dry)
and winter.  I've only had to deal with them getting inside once.  Fogging
the house twice took care of that.

We used to use Advantage and liked it a lot.  However, here in Texas,
heartworm is also a danger, and we had to give them HeartGuard in addition
to the Advantage.  The HeartGuard is a big thing that they are supposed to
chew right down, but they hated it.  So, I had to crumble it up and mix it
with wet food and hope that they got most of it down.
Then there was the additional cost of paying for two medications.
Revolution not only treats fleas, but also heartworm and a few other
parasites, so, although it is expensive, for someone in this area, it
actually is a bargain.
Fleas are a year-round deal here, and mosquitoes the majority of the year.

We started doing something that is going to save us buckets of money. We
get our Revolution from petscriptions.com, it's way cheaper than at
TED's. Furthermore, I discussed it with TED and we're now getting big
dog Revolution and dividing that up among the females. Very simple math
gives you the correct dosage and a little syringe allows for easy
delivery. :)

I think a bath will do it. :)

Do what we do, but the big dog dose and divvy it up. One vial should be
enough for all your cats, it's enough for the Fantastic Seven. Just bear
in mind that the dosage if by weight, so Sammy should probably get the
same does as the adults by now.

It's pouring down raining right now, but tomorrow I'm going to go round to
all the neighbors and put up fliers about him.  I've mixed feelings about
that, though.  He was *CRAWLING* with fleas.  The Revolution killed them,
but I combed him out with a flea comb, dipping it in a beer stein full of
water and Dawn liquid, and I pulled off about 10,000 dead fleas.  If is does
have an owner they are *certainly* not taking care of him!

You have not a house guest.  You have a "little one".  And adorable little
one, at that :)  Thank you for getting the fleas off by whatever method.
Surely you will do the thing with listing the bittie on posters, etc., but
whoever owned this bittie didn't care else it wouldn't be covered in fleas.

You got your wish; you now have a sweet grey bittie.  Sammy can train the
bittie to torture you ;)  Love that bittie!  I think Persia would have
looked like that!

Yeah, he certainly looks black on my screen - VERY black.
With those bodylines, he could be part Siamese or an

Hmmm.  A few short hours, and you're already using words like "stay"

Othello knew EXACTLY who to put on a show for. <G> Once you name them,
you're done for, dear. =o)  The Mothership has Chosen YOU. I'm sure the
little guy  is VERY grateful to be rid of the fleas.

If you truly can't take in another cat, put up the flyers in the
neighborhood, anyway.  Maybe the owners won't show up, but perhaps a
responsible, loving NEW hoomin will give little Othello a happy new forever
home.

I don't know about Houston, but have heard that in some parts of the
country an animal can be covered by fleas in a very short time. So, if
a previous home is found, I hope he was being treated better than the
fleas seem to indicate.

I understand your worry about returning him, given the flea situation.  But,
it's possible that he is new and got out before they had a chance to take
care of the problem.  Or, maybe not.
I think you should put a found ad in the paper.  It's the honest thing to
do, and it it's ever questioned, you can say you made an effort to find the
owner.
What worked for me was to make a flier and post it where I worked and in
TEDs' offices and selected business establishments.  Church bulletin boards
also are a good place.  I also told everybody about the cat and kept fliers
at my desk.
Meanwhile, I kept the cat and interviewed prospective slaves, looking for a
good match for the cat and human.
I also screened for attitude on declawing.  You can do this by asking, "Do
you have any experience with a declawed cat?"
It took a couple of months, and I got responses from some good people. They
just weren't a good match for that cat.
When I finally placed her, it was because of one of the fliers at a vet's
office.
Good luck with this little guy.  He is just terribly cute.  And maybe, as
others have suggested, you've just received what you asked for.
(Also good luck on the job front.)

He is beautiful!! I would say he looks a little older than 10-12 weeks
to me, it's a bit hard to tell from a photo, but he looks more like 4
months or so to me. Got those big long teenage legs and grown-up face.
What a sweetheart. I would put 'Cat Found' adverts around your area,
tell your local vets and shelters etc, as he is a domestic cat, recently
lost, or dumped. Though how anyone could dump such a gorgeous young chap
is beyond me! And if no-one replies... you have a lucky black cat :-)

Hearty congratulations on being Chosen!

He's adorable, so like Sir Weeble and my dearest Aries RB.
An accidental "Bombay" to a T.
FWIW I think Othello is a super name for him, and I hope you'll be
deleriously happy together for a LOOOOONG time!

Purrs, woofs & hoomin best wishes on your happy event

AAA! No wonder you caved. Who could look at that face and NOT bring the
little waif into the house? What a cutie!

Poor little guy -- he's lucky he found the family with "SUCKERS FOR
KITTIES" stamped on their foreheads ;o). Because I'm sure that you'll make
sure he finds a OneTrueHome, if not with your family, then with someone
else's.

Donna, Captain, and Stanley

P.S. and HISSSSS on whoever dumped him, if that's how he came to be in
your neighborhood. I'd like to take the people who dump pets, and abandon
THEM in the middle of the Sahara Desert without provisions. File it under
the heading of, "Let's see how THEY like that sort of treatment".

Well, you don't know if you're going to get a hit in salary yet. :) You
might get an increase...

OK, I, along with others believe you now have a boy-kitty owner!

But on another note, after looking at all the pictures (especially the ones
of him on your lap), I cam to the conclusion that Weeble had decided to
teleport himself to go visit His Pretty Persia - and gotten the signals
mixed and ended up at your place (this would have been his first
teleportation, he probably got the coordinates fuddled up), I had to check:
Weebs is still here, on the mimi-tower gere looking out the window, watching
a couple of black colored birds in the yard (not sure if they are starlings
or grackles, the grass is a bit tall & I can't see all of them, Just their
heads & backs), and some robins too, hopping around out there eating all the
(yummy) buggies.

I'm sure I couldn't turn him away. Maybe he'll bring you luck in finding
a new and better job.

A house is not a home, without a cat.

What a beautiful little darling.  I would be so suckered into keeping him.
I hope the fostering works out!
