OT: Job hunters - where do you live?

Kalynnda Berens - 07 May 2005 18:42 GMT With all the computer people looking for work, if you are willing to post the area of the country and what type of jobs you are looking for, I (and I'm sure others) can keep my eyes open. I'm also in the computer field, and sometimes I see job postings or hear of openings.
I work for SAIC, and I know they have offices all over the country, and hire a fair number of programmers and systems admins. My location (Cleveland, OH), isn't hiring, but I'm not sure anyone would want to live here anyway :-)

I'm in Longmont, Colorado. I'd rather not commute all the way to Denver, but Boulder, Superior, Lafayette, etc. are good. I'm a software engineer with experience primarily in OO languages like Java and C++, but I've dabbled in many other languages and am quick to pick them up. To me, the opportunity to problem-solve and work with a strong technical team is more important than the specific product.

You may want to check with the local Department of Human Services (welfare office). The one here always seemed to have a ton of turnover, and they always were in need of people who could troubleshoot well, also the local city and county government offices.
Working for the gov't isn't always fun, but at least in the IT dep't, there was NO contact with clients, and that's always helpful. Besides, they have pretty good benefit packages, regular holidays, and pretty decent sick/vacation leave policies. Just an idea.
You'd be working on existing software, but sometimes, as here, the local human services office would create a location specific software for keeping track of various types of information (here it was for the Child Welfare System).
Smokie Darling (Annie) - that goes for everyone looking for work. Check the local governments. Getting into the Fed is pretty dang hard, but locally? You may want to check at the VA for their IT departments as well.

Well, I'm more the clerical/admin type (with call center experience), and DH is a computer guy retraining for heavy equipment operating, but we're in Sacramento, CA, with one champion power-purrer and one motorbeak dove sounding off on behalf of all.

I was a Senior Support Analyst was doing software tech support and then in the last four years of my employment along with that I did 95% of the QA Testing. It was for proprietary software written in Progress 4GL RDBMS.
I learned yesterday from a programmer who still works there they are switching to Oracle with .Net due to the large size of the databases. Should be a fun transition since the programmers all know Progress, very few even know what Oracle is. The programmers who want to can figure it out. But it was hard enough for me to teach simple "for each" with "where" "if" and "then" statements in Progress queries to some of the folks in support. This transition will probably clear out a large number of people due to sheer terror. Sadly, I think this is what they are aiming towards.

Can't hurt...I'm tired of juggling feast-and-famine consulting contracts.
Major areas: design and optimization of very large networks (e.g., global ISP), router and network security product design and management, carrier network operations, design and development of systems for clinical medicine (requiring medical knowledge). Published four books, four RFCs, and numerous papers at the network design and research level. Experience with security and privacy law and regulation, especially medical. Emergency response, critical infrastructure protection, and survivable communications up to and including nuclear war environment.

It's in Memphis. (If the reference number doesn't work, go through the locations path, then pick TN, Memphis. Good luck!

Christine Burel - 08 May 2005 03:30 GMT Kalynnda, Just a kudo to you for thinking of this idea! Btw, my DH works for Northrop Grumman here in Albuquerque, some of you computer folk might want to check out www.northropgrumman.com, too. Christine

I'm also in the >>>computer field, and sometimes I see job postings or hear of openings. Well, I'm a Unix Systems Administrator in the Washington, D.C. area. Primarily Solaris, although I do know IRIX too, and some HPUX and AIX. I'd put myself into the 'high intermediate' level of knowledge, even if I am the 'working senior' at my current job. Oh, for what it's worth, the company has told the winning contract company that they want to keep me around, so I'm employed for at least another year. That doesn't mean I'm not keeping my options open, though.

I'm about 50 miles east of LA, in Highland, CA. I've been doing mostly Perl work for the last few years, but I've also got a lot of years experience in C and a fair bit of work in C++. I've done web apps (of course), automated test equipment, cellular network analysis, aand general office applications (OSHA reporting, warehouse time and attendance, etc).
My preferred area, though, is actually system administration. I've been running Unix and Linux systems since the early days.
