Well, four good years down the tubes - I lost my computer programming
job today (perl language in a medical records repricing type
business).

Please send job hunting purrs our way so that I can continue to
support Little Feet, Dulce and Buster in the style to which they'd
like to become accustomed (big grin).

Hugs and Purrs,
Mark

Job hunting purrs are on their way.  It's scary how many people need them
right now.  I won't get political, so will stop here.

Sympathetic purrs from someone who also got layoff when programming Perl
and am still not working.

Purrs for both of you to find new work.  I haven't used Perl, but I've
heard people say that XSL syntax is a bit like Perl, so you might find
it easier to transition to new techniques.

My sympathies!  I know how you feel ... just got canned on Monday.

Don't think of it as down the tubes, though ... I mean, in those four
years, you probably learned some stuff, or if nothing else, you kept
your coding skills sharp.

At least in my area, I see a lot more jobs being posted than I did two
years ago, or even last year.

One thing I'm trying to do (in addition to the obvious "polish resume,
write brilliant cover letter, customize both for each company" thing)
is bone up on some of my weaker points.  For example, I've been
reading the Gang of Four Design Patterns book, and I'm working on a
J2EE tutorial.

Good luck!  It really sucks to be let go, but I hope you can find
something soon.

Those are very non-embedded topics. :)  Maybe you can even get a
certification in that area - the SCEA is a Sun certification that
covers Gamma et al. design patterns and J2EE, and a few other things.

Took me a second to figure out what you meant by non-embedded =)

In my former life, I wrote Java GUI apps to hook up to massive DoD
databases.  The embedded thing happened kind of accidentally; I was
hired for ground station work at an aerospace company, but as usual,
budgets shifted and they had an opening in flight software ... so
there I went.  I've only been doing embedded work for about two years.

I don't think of myself as tied to particular technologies, although
I'll admit that I love a nice, clean OO design.  I also enjoy shell
scripting, though, and writing decidedly non-OO PHP sites ... I'm a
dabbler.  I like learning new things and playing with new toys.
Embedded software is minorly annoying because it's hard to play with
at home.

I may think about the cert, but eh ... technologies, buzzwords, they
go stale.  The concept of design patterns is (I think) an enduring
one, but the specific patterns (and which are considered antipatterns)
may shift with the years.
