Dyson "Animal" vacuum

I am going to buy the purple "Dyson" this weekend and was wondering if
anyone here has any experience with Dysons.  I have 2 long-haired cats and
they shed daily.  Lots of hair!  The reason I want a Dyson is because it
doesn't lose suction power overtime. I am getting the purple "animal" with
all the attachments.  I think there are 2 "Animal" types -- DC07 and the
DC14 and I think the only difference is the attachments?  the motor is the
same on the yellow, red and purple?  Anyone?

Also, was wondering if the attachments have a crevice hose type thing to get
into sofas, etc.  I have read on the Net that everyone loves these vacuums
although Consumer Reports gave Dyson a bad rating for cleaning.

A coworker told me that there are no beater brushes and the attachment to
clean your furniture is not very good.  Anyone?

Hope you will try one first.  Thought I wanted a Dyson until I tried one at
a local store and found it unbelievably heavy - this may not matter to some
of you but my back needs the lightest possible vacuum which will pick up cat
hair.............Lorna

Lorna is correct.  These are very heavy machines.  That is not a problem for
me because I live in a single-story house and do not have to lift the
vacuum, but it would be *very* heavy to haul around if you needed to go up
or down stairs.  On the other hand, it has very large wheels and easily
maneuvers if you can simply roll it from one area to another (as I can).

I have one (the purple model you mentioned), and I love it!  It is very
sturdy, easy to clean (just lift the cannister out, pull the release button
to empty it, then snap the bottom back into place and put it back on the
machine), and has a heavy-duty extension so that the vacuum will remain in
place while you work on furniture.  Yes, it does have a crevice tool.  More
important, it has an awesome rotating brush to use on furniture or other
places where pet fur accumulates.  They are pricey and come in
jarringly-ugly colors, but I wouldn't give mine up for anything.  I
previously had both a Hoover and a Panasonic, and this one cleans rings
around my other vacuums.  It works well on both carpet and hard floors, and
it is self-adjusting so the user doesn't have to "set" anything to move from
one type of flooring to another.  The only thing I don't like is the cord.
It is very long (and that's good), but it is not as flexible as the ones on
some vacuums; so it sometimes doesn't coil as nicely as I would like.
That's a minor defect, though.

Where are you getting yours?  I got mine at Sears because they have a
price-match policy.  I located the best price I could find on the Internet,
printed a copy of the page, and Sears matched the price.

I also noticed that Consumer Reports gave it a blah rating.  I can't really
explain it because I have found this to be an incredibly effective machine.
I also read reviews in www.epinions.com before I bought mine, and there are
some glowing reports there.

Thanks for the feedback Mary...  I also have been reading about the Dyson
and I guess Consumer Reports is wrong.  I only can go on what I have read,
but Consumer Reports rated the Hoover Wind-Tunnel #1 and I read that people
vacuumed with the "Wind-Tunnel" and then vacuumed the same area (rug) with
the Dyson, and a whole canister of "junk" was picked up.  So, I don't know.
I don't subscribe to CR online or in the mail, but that is just what I have
read.

I think the Dyson weighs 18 lbs.?  I live on 1 floor, so no lifting up
stairs.

I was asking about the furniture tool.  Is there a rotating brush?  Someone
told me that it wasn't really a brush, but rather just an air vacuum thingy.
No brushes.  That concerned me.

I was going to go to Best Buy first and then Sears.

Yes, it has a rotating brush -- and it is a real gem.  However, this is
where you see some of the major price differences in what will otherwise
look like the same Dyson model.  It comes in different configurations with
different cleaning tools provided.  Be sure to get the model that includes
the rotating brush (which is actually called a "mini turbine tool").  It's
well worth the price difference.

Incidentally, I mentioned the Sears price-match in an earlier message.  I
saved almost $100.00 by going online for the best price, then using that to
get the same price from Sears.  I also checked Best Buy.  Their price was
similar to the price listed by Sears, but they did not have a price-match
policy.

Where did you get the best price?  I am looking at $549.99.
MaryL - 06 May 2005 00:11 GMT
> Where did you get the best price?  I am looking at $549.99.

I have had mine for about a year, so I don't remember where I got the best
price.  I simply went to the Internet and typed "Dyson vacuum cleaners"
(without the quotation marks) in the address bar.  Numerous locations popped
up, and I spent some time checking through for best prices.  You will also
need to include the cost of shipping because Sears will reduce the price
match by that amount since you would have had to pay shipping costs if you
ordered online.

If you go to this location, you can see a picture of the rotating brush for
pet hair:  http://www.vacandsew.com/dyson_frame.htm

Try froogle.com ... enter your search term and it will find shopping
sites, from the lowest price on up ...

The thing about Dyson and Sony is you can't get a better price.  If you buy
a re-conditioned vacuum or re-furbished, you will save $50, but take a
chance.

Dyson's sell the same everywhere from what I was told.  I did a price
comparison and they are the same price everywhere.

I will buy locally and don't pay shipping.

Not true.  Dyson's have the same place *most* places, but there are
exceptions (and I saved almost $100.00).  If you look at the link I gave
you, the price there is $499.99 with free shipping.  Some other sites are
less, but you really have to look for it.  Then you can use that price and
still shop locally (which I also prefer) by using that for the price match.
I am talking about new units, not refurbished or reconditioned.

Yes, the "Animal 07" is $499 everywhere.  There is another "Animal 14"
($549.99) which inlcude some warranty and guarantee that costs $50.00 more.
3 more years or something.  There is no price break on Dyson.

I have searched the Net for a week and asked about prices and the only way
you can save is to buy on Amazon the re-furbished one for $50 less.  I did
Froogle and checked all the sites.

We all pay shipping no matter where you buy its just not broken out at
department stores......but I'm with you on buying locally whenever
possible.......small ones when possible....hardware stores......music
shops.......appliance shops.......are all going OOB and its a shame I
support them when I can especially the hardware store think about it
the next time you go to Home Depot or one of the big guys......walk
into a hardware store looking for a hard to find bolt or screw or
fastener of some time and the employee spends ten minutes with you for
a item under a dollar.......we gotta support those
people........climbing down from my soapbox..........not sure where
that came from but do buy locally and small when you can afford
it........

I got my purple Dyson at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for only $400.  It was
$500, but I had a 20% off coupon that they honored. Linen's N Things
specifially doesn't allow Dysons on their coupons (bleah).
Yes, it's heavy. It also sucks bigtime.  *laugh*  I mean SUCKS, as in
it'll pick the carpet right off the floor if you let it!
THe only thing I don't like is that it requires very frequent emptying,
but it's so easy to empty that it's only a minor problem.

Hi Jane,

Where did you get the coupon?  I searched online and they don't offer
coupons.  Did you get it in the newspaper?  I also thought I would use
the Linens & Things 20% off coupon until I read the small print  -- not
valid on Dysons.  Ick.

I always get the coupons in the mail.  However, 90% of the time, in small
print there is a disclaimer that it is not to be used on such & such
products, with Dyson being in that list.  Whoever rung up that sale is
probably going to be reamed by their boss.

One of my colleagues got the same deal. He called ahead and the person
he spoke with said they'd honor the coupon. I guess they'd rather make a
sale.

The coupon came from a friend of mine, who gets them in the mail. She
started collecting them when she was told that they never expire, in
spite of the date on the coupon. However, now she gets less of them.
Anyway.....I don't get them in the mail, since I don't live close
enough to a BBB, so I beg them from her once in awhie.
She got her Dyson with a coupon, too.

Have any of you considered a Rainbow cleaning system?  Uses water in the
vacuum itself, prevents the dust from getting back out into the air.  We
had a demonstration once, and i'm convinced its an excellent system, but
it was just too pricey for us.

EEEEK!  My ex-husband sold Rainbow Vac's (for a period of about 6 weeks).
That's where he picked up the little hussy partner of his and started giving
her my clothing, telling her it was from both of us for her birthday.  Just
how many birthdays can one have in 6 weeks?  Anyway, I was never really
impressed by the Rainbow (or my ex-husband, or the hussy - and yes, I got my
clothes back).

I've had the Rainbow since 1978, and have been quite pleased with its
performance.  The power head does a good job on cat fur.  I'd never pay the
going rate - utterly ridiculous.  But I got mine on a huge sale, and often see
'em used.

We had a Rainbow sales rep talk her way into the house a year ago.  I could
not believe her nerve.  The bitch was actually flirting with my spouse in
front of me as part of her wanna be sales pitch.  And he was being "too
polite" to throw her out.  I'm not that polite.

What the hell do her circumstance and her family problems have to do with
what sort of vacuum we would buy?    Most brazen sales person I've seen in
quite a while.  Even worse than the replacement window lady.  She was just
using the tactic of insinuating we were too cheep to buy a "quality product"

You have to be very careful about reviews from people who own them
find some independent sites that rate them from tests maybe Consumer
Reports screwed this one up it can happen. I admit that I do the same
thing (read customer reviews) but the internet is a double edge sword
if you read long enough you will find the kind of response that you
want........just keep digging and you can always convince yourself to
buy or not to buy.

A place like this probably very much better to get peoples opinions
than some anonymous poster. At least here if you find the person is
full of crap you can give them a tongue lashing, if you want to find
out about the motors and such just call the company they are reliable
for specifications and the like.....good luck and let us know how it
works for you......

Don't waste money on a Dyson. My vacuum guy says they're overpriced
crap. For the same cost you can get a German made Miele (canister w/
electric powerhead and HEPA filtration- forget about attachments that
are "air driven", no matter who makes them, as they are worthless.) It
comes with a standard 7 year warranty on the motor.
I've had mine for 8 or 9 years and, even after accidentally vacuuming up
a large bowl of water (I dropped the hose in it) it still runs like new
and the suction is the most powerful of the vacuums I've seen.

For furniture, the original Dirt Devil classic is the way to go and has
a belt driven brush roll so it works like an upright and really gets
hair off. They're hard to find, but available online:
http://www.dirtdevil.com/Products/Hand_Vacs/M08100RED.asp
Don't waste your money on the newer model with the detachable head. That
is also "air driven" and is a piece of garbage.

Because I've been doing business with my vacuum guy since 1985 and I
trust his knowledge. He's been in the vacuum sales and repair business
forever and is one of the old school types, the kind that  buys a Dyson
just so he can take it apart and see how it's made and the quality of
the parts (which is exactly what happened.)

So if he thought the Dyson was a quality product he would tell you and
lose a customer he has had for 20 years? There is such a thing as

What makes you think I'd spend $500 for a vacuum I use for work? Even if
I did, I'd spend it on a heavy duty quality commercial vacuum, not a
colorful overpriced fad item. I give him my business because he is
honest and reliable, and I've spent more to buy from him when I could
have gotten a better deal online because I like to support small,
reputable businesses. He's always been fair and honest, even if it means
I'd have to go elsewhere to find what I needed. He's sent me other
places for parts/equipment before rather than have me have to wait until
something comes in.

excuse me Megan I didn't know you had something going on the side with
this guy.....a little afternoon delight maybe......lol......

and what are you talking about I never said a word about you spending
$500 on a vacuum I just said that your knight in rubber hoses may not
be totally honest about a product he doesn't represent.....he may send
you elsewhere to buy a belt or bag but a vacuum I doubt after all he
has to make a living too. I too support the little guy whenever
possible but not blindly so......

settle down a little bit you are getting way to upset defending this
guy I'm glad you have someone you feel you can trust all I did was
make a statement about him not wanting to lose a customer by telling
you that  xyz machine is a great machine but I don't carry it. And
then you go and get your undies all in a bundle......

Now settle down a little I was kidding about the afternoon delight of
course but you sure showed a fierce need to defend this guy.

I don't see the humor and your comment was offensive and uinnecessary.

Price was discussed in this thread over and over. I don't see how you
missed it.

And how do you know? Have you ever met him? No? Do you know anything
about him other than what I have said, which is that he is fair and
honest? No? For you to make accusations and implications that someone is
dishonest when you don't know a damn thing about them about them is low
and despicable. Could it be you're projecting your own values on others?
Just asking...

Please explain how knowing and doing business with someone for over *20*
years results in "blind support?"

Because you don't know jackshit about the man but paint him as dishonest
anyway.

I have a funny way of doing that when some a.shole that doesn't know him
libels him.

Its a very real possiblitly that Dyson won't just give a franchise to
anyone many times the super stores put that in their contracts but
this superman can probably build one out of spare parts for you.....

I have a Dyson 02, cylinder version that can climb up your staircase rather
than an upright.
The first time I used it all over my house, well, I had to empty it twice
and I had previously used another brand, and I thought the place was clean.
Mine has a crevice hose with it and it's yellow and grey.

Does any of the Buropeans here have any experience with the Kärcher Ds
5500? It's one of those with a water tank instead of a bag, and supposed
to be especially good for cleaning out allergens, so I was thinking
maybe it's especially good for sucking up cat hair? I don't mind the
hair myself, but when you're renting, it's good form to keep the flat
somewhat tidy. ;o) My old vacuum died immediately after the warranty ran
out, and I think it died because of cat hair somewhere in the machinery.
:oP It had two different filters that could be changed, but it didn't
help to change them. The manufacturers claim that this model can't get
clogged because of the water tank, but I'm sceptical. It's very
expensive, but if it's good I'm prepared to pay.

We (Rautakesko, where I work) sell them and I can ask for really
detailled info on it. Not sure if we have a specimen machine somewhere
around, but I'll find out about that too. I'll find out more and get
back to you.

Hey, thanks, Christine. I didn't realise you people sold vacuums, too.

We sell anything you can find in a K-rauta or Rautia hardware store. Of
course the merchants don't have to buy everything from us, but as long
as they belong to the chain, they have to have certain items. And they
do buy a lot from us anyway.
But like I said, I'll get back to you on the Kärcher as soon as I find
out more at the office.
